MEGA: a medium-energy gamma-ray astronomy mission concept

2005

The Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy (MEGA) telescope concept will soon be proposed as a MIDEX mission. This mission would enable a sensitive all-sky survey of the medium-energy gamma-ray sky (0.4 - 50 MeV) and bridge the huge sensitivity gap between the COMPTEL and OSSE experiments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the SPI and IBIS instruments on INTEGRAL, and the visionary Advanced Compton Telescope (ACT) mission. The scientific goals include, among other things, compiling a much larger catalog of sources in this energy range, performing far deeper searches for supernovae, better measuring the galactic continuum and line emissions, and identifying the components of the cosmic diffuse…

Detecting the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background in the future Water-based Liquid Scintillator Detector Theia

2021

A large-scale neutrino observatory based on water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS) will be excellently suited for a measurement of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). The WbLS technique offers high signal efficiency and effective suppression of the otherwise overwhelming background from neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. To illustrate this, we investigate the DSNB sensitivity for two configurations of the future Theia detector by developing the expected signal and background rejection efficiencies along a full analysis chain. Based on a statistical analysis of the remaining signal and background rates, we find that a rather moderate exposure of $190\text{ }…

High-resolution positron lifetime spectrometer with BaF2 scintillators

1987

In this communication we report on a design of a fast coincidence positron lifetime spectrometer, which is based on single crystal barium fluoride (BaF2) scintillators. A good time resolution (190ps, FWHM), combined with a high efficiency, has been obtained in the normal experimental set-up (with cathode earthed in the photo multipliers). The pile-up effect is observed to disturbe the measured lifetimes in the 180 degree geometry due to the high detection efficiency of the BaF2 scintillator.

The optical instrumentation of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter

2013

The purpose of this Note is to describe the optical assembly procedure called here Optical Instrumentation and the quality tests conducted on the assembled units. Altogether, 65 Barrel (or LB) modules were constructed - including one spare - together with 129 Extended Barrel (EB) modules (including one spare). The LB modules were mechanically assembled at JINR (Dubna, Russia) and transported to CERN, where the optical instrumentation was performed with personnel contributed by several Institutes. The modules composing one of the two Extended Barrels (known as EBA) were mechanically assembled in the USA, and instrumented in two US locations (ANL, U. of Michigan), while the modules of the oth…

Target thickness dependence of the Be(p,xn) neutron energy spectrum

2014

We report on the current status of the analysis of an experiment performed at The Svedberg Laboratory, with the aim of investigating the produced neutron field by Be(p,xn) converters of three different thicknesses with a 30 MeV proton beam. The neutron energy spectra were measured with the Time of Flight technique using a BC-501 liquid scintillator with good n-γ Pulse Shape Discrimination properties, while the detected events were recorded simultaneously by two Data AcQuisition systems. In this paper, we present the experimental setup, the analysis technique and some preliminary results.  AlFONS

A walk-free centroid method for lifetime measurements with pulsed beams

1978

Abstract A delayed-coincidence lifetime measurement method based on a comparison of walk-free centroids of time spectra is presented. The time is measured between the cyclotron rf signal and the pulse from a plastic scintillation detector followed by a fixed energy selection. The events to be time-analyzed are selected from the associated charge-particle spectrum of a silicon detector which is operated in coincidence with the scintillator, i.e. independently of the formation of the signal containing the time information. With this technique, with the micropulse fwhm of typically 500 to 700 ps, half-lives down to the 10 ps region can be measured. The following half-lives are obtained with th…

FARCOS: a versatile and modular Femtoscopy Array for Correlations and Spectroscopy

2012

In the framework of multi-fragmentation experiments the evolution towards two- (or more) particle correlations with stable and radioactive beams calls for the development of a novel detection system featuring high angular and energy resolution and able to reconstruct the particles momentum at high precision. The proposed detection system, named FARCOS (Femtoscopy ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) will be beneficial for different physical cases. To this aim we are building a prototype detection system featuring four telescopes. Each telescope features an active area of 6.4 cm × 6.4 cm and is composed of three detection stages. The first ΔE stage is a Double Sided Silicon Strip Detecto…

Light Charged Particle Identification by Means of Digital Pulse Shape Acquisition in the CHIMERACsI(Tl) Detectors at GSI Energies

2011

We report the results obtained by applying digital pulse shape acquisition and digital signal processing to the signals from CsI(Tl) scintillators read out by photodiodes at high incident energy (400 MeV/u). The digitized signals allows the discrimination of light charged particles by computing the Fast and Slow components and the Rise Time of the output pulses of the CsI(Tl). When the energies of the light charged particles exceed those corresponding to their ranges in CsI(Tl), the points related to the punching-through particles gather in the corresponding scatter plots giving rise to a cusp. The punching-through points are used as energy calibration points for the reaction products stopp…

Development of a High Precision Axial 3-D PET for Brain Imaging

2009

We describe a PET device based on a novel method to extract the coordinates of the interaction point of the 511keV γ rays from 100 mm long and thin LYSO (Lutetium Yttrium OxyorthoSilicate) scintillator bars, positioned axially in the tomograph. The coordinate along the hit crystal is measured by using a hodoscope of Wave Length Shifting (WLS) plastic strips mounted perpendicularly to each plane of scintillators. As photodetectors, new Geiger mode Avalanche PhotoDetectors (G-APDs) with integrated electronics are being used to detect both the hit crystal in a block (x and y coordinates) and the interaction point in the crystal (z coordinate) through the light escaping from the crystal and tra…

The features of electronics structure of the multichannel scintillation module for the EMMA experiment

2011

A brief description of the developed structural electric diagrams of 16-channel scintillation module for the underground EMMA experiment, the basic characteristics and parameters of the electrical diagrams of this module are presented. Multi-pixel photodiodes operating in a limited Geiger mode are used for photoreadout of the scintillator detectors in 16-channel scintillation module. The method of the automatic tuning of the photosensors gain based on the stabilization of an average counting rate of the scintillation detectors from gamma rays of a natural radioactive background is described. peerReviewed
