From Business System to Supply Chain and Production in Japan. Lean production and its roots in Japanese business culture
2009
The Japanese business environment has been studied for many years by researchers and business operators from all over the world. The Japanese culture created a business climate that is different from other industrialized economies. Gerlach defined the Japanese economy as “alliance capitalism” , an expression, which better than others, represents the relational nature of the Japanese society and business system. It is not by chance that the manufacturing and management techniques, later defined as “lean” by MIT authors, were born and raised in Japan. In this dissertation I will attempt to explain why and how these approaches are linked with the Japanese culture and the Japanese business envi…
Phenotypic and Immunometabolic Aspects on Stem Cell Memory and Resident Memory CD8+ T Cells
2022
The immune system, smartly and surprisingly, saves the exposure of a particular pathogen in its memory and reacts to the pathogen very rapidly, preventing serious diseases.Immunologists have long been fascinated by understanding the ability to recall and respond faster and more vigorously to a pathogen, known as “memory”.T-cell populations can be better described by using more sophisticated techniques to define phenotype, transcriptional and epigenetic signatures and metabolic pathways (single-cell resolution), which uncovered the heterogeneity of the memory T-compartment. Phenotype, effector functions, maintenance, and metabolic pathways help identify these different subsets. Here, we exam…

Monte Carlo Simulation of a Homopolymer−Copolymer Mixture Interacting with a Surface: Bulk versus Surface Micelles and Brush Formation
2008
Using Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model, we study the formation of micelles in a confined mixture of asymmetric AB-diblock copolymers and homopolymers. The composition of the sphere-forming AB-diblock copolymers is fA = 1/8. The mixture is confined into a thin film. The film surfaces attract the minority component of the diblock with strength, eW. To efficiently sample the micelle size distribution and establish equilibrium between the surface and the bulk, we work in the semigrandcanonical ensemble, i.e. at fixed density and fixed chemical potential difference between the two types of chains, choosing a large incompatibility χN ≃ 100 (strong segregation regime). The com…
2012
The aim of this work is to build a thermodynamic model at 25°C to describe the main hydrates of ordinary Portland cement with or without supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) : calcium hydrosilicates. With high aluminium content, SCM in blended cements modify the nature and the composition of the hydrates of cement paste. The simplified model system CaO-SiO2-H2O was studied by synthesising of C-S-H with identical protocol and analysis. We distinguished, hydration solutions undersaturated and supersaturated from Portlandite. This last system has been extended to CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system. Then, we determined the most suitable protocol to synthesize pure C-A-S-H.The nanoparticular nature a…
Long Range Bond-Bond Correlations in Dense Polymer Solutions
2004
The scaling of the bond-bond correlation function $C(s)$ along linear polymer chains is investigated with respect to the curvilinear distance, $s$, along the flexible chain and the monomer density, $\rho$, via Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. % Surprisingly, the correlations in dense three dimensional solutions are found to decay with a power law $C(s) \sim s^{-\omega}$ with $\omega=3/2$ and the exponential behavior commonly assumed is clearly ruled out for long chains. % In semidilute solutions, the density dependent scaling of $C(s) \approx g^{-\omega_0} (s/g)^{-\omega}$ with $\omega_0=2-2\nu=0.824$ ($\nu=0.588$ being Flory's exponent) is set by the number of monomers $g(\r…
Glass transition of polymer melts: Test of theoretical concepts by computer simulation.
2003
Abstract Polymers are good glass formers and allow for the study of melts near the glass transition in (meta-)stable equilibrium. Theories of the glass transition imply such an equilibrium and can, hence, be tested by the study of polymer melts. After a brief summary of the basic experimental facts about the glass transition in polymers, the main theoretical concepts are reviewed: mode coupling theory (MCT), entropy theory, free-volume theory, the idea of a growing length describing the size of cooperative regions, etc. Then, two basic coarse-grained models of polymers are described, which have been developed aiming at a test of these concepts. The first model is the bond-fluctuation model …
Surface and bulk ordering in thin films of a symmetrical diblock copolymer
2013
Amphiphilic diblock copolymers have the ability to adapt their surface's molecular composition to the hydrophilicity of their environment. In the case of about equal volume fractions of the two polymer blocks, the bulk of these polymers is known to develop a laminar ordering. We report here our investigation of the relationship between bulk ordering and surface morphology/chemical composition in thin films of such an amphiphilic diblock copolymer. Upon annealing in vacuum, the expected lamella ordering in the bulk of the film is observed and we find the morphology of the film surface to be defined by the thickness of the as-deposited film: If the as-deposited thickness matches the height of…
