MEGA: a medium-energy gamma-ray astronomy mission concept

2005

The Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy (MEGA) telescope concept will soon be proposed as a MIDEX mission. This mission would enable a sensitive all-sky survey of the medium-energy gamma-ray sky (0.4 - 50 MeV) and bridge the huge sensitivity gap between the COMPTEL and OSSE experiments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the SPI and IBIS instruments on INTEGRAL, and the visionary Advanced Compton Telescope (ACT) mission. The scientific goals include, among other things, compiling a much larger catalog of sources in this energy range, performing far deeper searches for supernovae, better measuring the galactic continuum and line emissions, and identifying the components of the cosmic diffuse…

Slewing Mirror Telescope and the Data-Acquisition System for the UFFO-Pathfinder

2013

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) aims to detect the earliest moment of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) which is not well known, resulting into the enhancement of GRB mechanism understanding. The pathfinder mission was proposed to be a scaled-down version of UFFO, and only contains the UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) measuring the X-ray/gamma-ray with the wide-field of view and the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) with a rapid-response for the UV/optical photons. Once the UBAT detects a GRB candidate with the position accuracy of 10 arcmin, the SMT steers the UV/optical photons from the candidate to the telescope by the fast rotatable mirror and provides the early UV/optical pho…

Near-field optical response of a two-dimensional grating of gold nanoparticles

2001

Laboratoire de Physique, Optique Submicronique, Universite´de Bourgogne, Boite Postale 47870, F-21078 Dijon, France~Received 1 August 2000; published 4 April 2001!This article reports on the near-field optical response of a small square grating of gold nanoparticles tailoredby electron-beam lithography. The investigation of the grating is aimed at a deepened understanding ofelectromagnetic interaction among particles due to scattered light fields. Therefore, a photon scanning tunnel-ing microscope is applied to acquire near-field optical images. Two different incident wavelengths are used tocharacterize the intensity and the spatial localization of the electromagnetic near field both in and out…

The Sun as an X‐Ray Star. I. Deriving the Emission Measure Distribution versus Temperature of the Whole Solar Corona from theYohkoh/Soft X‐Ray Telesc…

2000

The scope of this work is to obtain the emission measure distributions versus temperature, EM(T ), of the whole solar corona from Yohkoh Soft X-ray Telescope images. As discussed in Paper II, the EM(T ) is our starting point for studying the Sun as an X-ray star. To this purpose, we need to extract as much information as possible from the Yohkoh/SXT data covering the whole range of the Yohkoh/SXT tem- perature sensitivity, i.e., 5.5 \ log T (K) \ 8. In particular at low photon counts and temperatures below 106 K, errors on the temperature and emission measure determination are expected to be large. To this end, we have made an extensive set of simulations to explore the nominal performance …

FIGARO IV: Large-area balloon-borne telescope to study rapid time variabilities in the gamma-ray sources at energies above 50 MeV

1993

We present a new γ-ray telescope based on the Limited Streamer Tube technology, used as tracking chambers to detect photons above 100 MeV. This technique allows to obtain very large sensitive areas (16 m2 in our experiment), together with a good angular resolution for payloads embarcable in high-altitude balloon flights. The capability to collect a large signal in a short exposure time makes the telescope particularly suitable and competitive with respect to satellite-based detectors for studying both periodic and random time variabilities on galactic and extragalactic γ-ray sources.

Simultaneous observation of light localization and confinement in near-field optics

2001

We report on the observation, in direct space, of both light localization and confinement effects near lithographically designed structures. The sample is observed in the optical near-field zone with a Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM). Several patterns composed of a few periods of TiO2 dots, arranged as a hexagonal lattice, have been investigated. When the central dot of the pattern is removed, a phenomenon of light localization above the vacancy can be observed in the PSTM image. The occurrence of this phenomenon can be related to the variation of the electromagnetic local density of state.

Amplification of nonlinear currents generation at harmonics frequencies of submillimeter radiation

2006

The conditions are found when rapid heating of the electrons of a degenerate semiconductor in the presence of two electric fields, one constant and the other variable, is accompanied by the formation of a distribution function significantly departing from the Fermi one. It is also shown that the newly found modification of the electron distribution yields a relative amplification of nonlinear currents generation.

ARCADE: Description of the project and setup of the Lidar/AMT system

2015

The ARCADE (Atmospheric Research for Climate and Astroparticle DEtection) project is a 3 years project funded by MIUR, that aims to study the aerosol attenuation of UV light in atmosphere using multiple instruments and techniques, as those commonly used in the cosmic rays community: elastic Lidar, Raman Lidar, side-scattering measurements using a distant laser source. All measurements will be acquired on the same air mass at the same time, in a semi-desertic site near Lamar, Colorado (U.S.). For each instrument, multiple analysis techniques will be tested: the target is a better comprehension of the systematics and limits of applicability of each method. The system is composed by a Lidar (e…

Indirect searches for Dark Matter with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

2012

The results of a search for high-energy neutrinos coming from the direction of the Sun using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope during 2007 and 2008 are presented. The number of neutrinos observed is found to be compatible with background expectations and upper limits for the spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-proton cross-sections are derived and compared to predictions of the CMSSM. These limits are comparable to those obtained by other neutrino telescopes and are more stringent than those obtained by direct search experiments for the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross-section assuming the self-annihilation proceeds through hard channels, i.e. via W + W and t + t .

Status of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

2004

Abstract The IceCube neutrino telescope, to be constructed near the Antarctic South Pole, represents the next generation of neutrino telescope. Its large 1 km3 size will make it uniquely sensitive to the detection of neutrinos from astrophysical sources. The current design of the detector is presented. The basic performance of the detector and its ability to search for neutrinos from various astrophysical sources has been studied using detailed simulations and is discussed.
