The MOCVD assisted formation of nested WS2 inorganic fullerenes (IF-WS2) was performed by enhancing surface diffusion with iodine, and fullerene growth was monitored by taking TEM snapshots of intermediate products. The internal structure of the core–shell nanoparticles was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after cross-cutting with a focused ion beam (FIB). Lamellar reaction intermediates were found occluded in the fullerene particles. In contrast to carbon fullerenes, layered metal chalcogenides prefer the formation of planar, plate-like structures where the dangling bonds at the edges are stabilized by excess S atoms. Competition between surface reaction and diffusion of gold deposited onto ZrTe3

Abstract Surface reaction and diffusion of gold, deposited onto the (0 0 1) ZrTe 3 van der Waals (vdW) surface, is studied by transmission electron and scanning tunneling microscopy. It is shown that both processes compete at temperatures as low as room temperature. In case of diffusion the deposited gold mostly disappears from the surface and intercalates into the vdW gaps of the substrate. Residual unreacted gold agglomerates are rather mobile and are often displaced by the scanning tip along the [1 0 0] direction of the substrate. Can international environmental cooperation be bought?

In this paper a two-stage game of international environmental agreement formation with asymmetric countries is analytically solved. The equilibrium of the game makes it possible to determine the size and composition of a stable agreement. Two cases are studied. In the first case, countries differ only in abatement costs, while in the second case, they differ in environmental damages. In both cases, two different institutional settings, one without transfers and another with transfers, are considered. The use of tilted illumination onto the input object in combination with time multiplexing is a useful technique to overcome the Abbe diffraction limit in imaging systems. It is based on the generation of an expanded synthetic aperture that improves the cutoff frequency (and thus the resolution limit) of the imaging system. A new method to improve the resolution of optical imaging systems beyond the classical Rayleigh resolution limit is presented. The technique relies on synthetic aperture generation in three stages. The first one (encoding stage) uses an illumination procedure that combines both on-axis and off-axis illumination beams with different polarization states onto the object. Kant deemed a theory of life impossible, while Goethe believed that to understand life we should consider it as a whole. The history of Biology is replete with theoretical confrontations, which—dialectically speaking—are usually resolved by their integration in explanatory theories of greater scope. The major confrontation in Biology is between analytic and synthetic conceptions . Kant and Goethe would probably be astounded to see how the analytical conception has helped provide so many details of the cellular world, sufficient to approach the cell as a whole in the way required by the synthetic tradition. I call this “the realisation of Goethe’s dream”.

Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. In this study, facile tape casting process has been successfully carried out to fabricate an unit anode supported intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) with four different layers: a composite cathode which is a mix of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF48) and Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.9 (GDC10), GDC10 as thin electrolyte layer, NiO-GDC10 without pore former as thin anode functional layer (AFL), and anode support layer of NiO-GDC10 with carbon pore former. The multi-layer was sintered once to produce an unit planar cell. An OCV of 1.002 V at 500 °C, and maximum power density of 466 mW cm–2 at 648 °C are obtained.
