Indigenous people’s responses to drought in northwest Bangladesh

2019

Abstract Bangladesh is highly disaster-prone, with drought being a major hazard which significantly impacts water, food, health, livelihoods, and migration. In seeking to reduce drought vulnerabilities and impacts while improving responses, existing literature pays limited attention to community-level views and actions. This paper aims to contribute to filling in this gap by examining how an indigenous group, the Santal in Bangladesh’s northwest, responds to drought through local strategies related to water, food, and migration which in turn impact health and livelihoods. A combination of quantitative data through a household survey and qualitative data through participatory rural appraisal…

Are children more paternalistic than their mothers when choosing snacks?

2016

International audience; This paper focuses on an experiment in which mothers and their child separately chose between relatively healthy foods (flasks of stewed apples) and relatively unhealthy foods (candy bars). Each participant first filled up a first bag for her/himself, and then, a second one for the other person of the dyad. A simple nutritional message on vitamins and sugar contents of foods was then provided, and subsequently each participant filled up a third bag for her/himself and a fourth one for the other person of the dyad. The results show that before revealing the nutritional message, mothers are, on average, "indulgent", which means that they choose a lower number of relati…

Käymme yhdessä ain, käymme aina rinnakkain : analyysi kuntaliitosretoriikan käsitteistön muuttumisesta 1960- luvulta 2000-luvulle

2010

Tutkimukseni aiheena on selvittää kuntaliitoskeskusteluun kuuluvien käsitteiden vaikutusta kuntaliitosten toteuttamiseen ja kuinka käsitteet ovat vaikuttaneet poliittiseen diskurssiin ja toimintaan kuntaliitoksissa viimeisen noin 40 vuoden aikana virallisten tahojen ja tekstien kautta. Tutkimuksessa kuntaliitoskeskustelua tarkastellaan 1960-luvulta 2000-luvulle. Varsinainen analyysi jakautuu kolmeen päälukuun. Ensimmäinen käsittää ajanjakson 1960- ja 1970-luvut, toinen 1980-luvun ja osan 1990-luvusta. Kolmannessa luvussa käsitellään edellisten vuosikymmenten keskustelujen vaikutuksia kahden kuntaliitoksen toteutumisen 2000-luvulla.

The granting of the Duchy of Sueca to Manuel Godoy and the acquisition by auction of the territory and the belongings of this town, led to significant changes in the jurisdiction a…

Health literacy in familial hypercholesterolemia: A cross-national study.

2018

Background High rates of inadequate health literacy are associated with maladaptive health outcomes in chronic disease including increased mortality and morbidity rates, poor treatment adherence and poor health. Adequate health literacy may be an important factor in the effective treatment and management of familial hypercholesterolemia, and may also be implicated in genetic screening for familial hypercholesterolemia among index cases. The present study examined the prevalence and predictors of health literacy in familial hypercholesterolemia patients attending clinics in seven countries. Design Cross-sectional survey. Methods Consecutive FH patients attending clinics in Australia, Brazil,…

Relative and absolute socioeconomic inequality in smoking: time trends in Germany from 1995 to 2013

2020

Abstract Purpose This study aimed to investigate time trends in relative and absolute socioeconomic inequality in smoking prevalence in Germany using several indicators for socioeconomic position. Socioeconomic position was measured by indicators for income, education, and occupation. Relative and absolute socioeconomic inequalities were estimated with the regression-based relative index of inequality and the slope index of inequality, respectively.
