Abstract A series of racemic dirhodium(II) compounds with two ortho-metalated aryl phosphine ligands in a head-to-tail arrangement Rh2(O2CR)2(pc)2 (pc=ortho-metalated aryl phosphine) (1a–k) were tested in the regio- and stereoselective cyclopropanation of racemic 1-diazo-6-methyl-3-(2-propenyl)-5-hepten-2-one 2, which possesses two different reactive CC double bonds for a five-membered-ring formation. The complexes Rh2(O2CCH3)2(pc)2 {pc=[(C6H4)P(C6H5)2], [(p-CH3C6H3)P(p-CH3C6H4)2], and [(C6H4)P(C6H5)(C6F5)]} (1a–d) successfully enhanced the cyclopropanation of trisubstituted versus monosubstituted CC bonds to give an 80:20 selectivity ratio. Some neoclerodane (2–4) and labdane (5 and 6) diterpene ketones having a β- or γ-hydroxy function, an α-epoxy group, or an α-olefinic double bond have been irradiated at λ = 313 nm in dry solvents (benzene or methanol). Fruticolone (2) yielded the naturally occurring 5,6-seco-neoclerodan-6,1α-olide derivative fruticolide (1), while hispanolone (5) gave the δ-lactone 8, both transformations involving a Norrish type I photoreaction. The α,β-unsaturated ketone derivative 4 was transformed into 7 by a stereoselective intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction involving its furanic 13(16)-double bond. An easy access to substituted (R)-3-hydroxy-3-phenyloxindoles, (R)-benzylic acids, and benzophenones is described. The reaction of the lithium enolate of the (2S,5S)-cis-1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with several o- and p-halonitrobenzenes proceeds readily to give the corresponding arylation products in good yields and diastereoselectivities. The reduction of the nitro group with Zn/HCl/EtOH in the o-nitro arylation products with concomitant intramolecular aminolysis of the dioxolanone moiety leads directly to enantiomerically pure (R)-3-hydroxy-3-phenyloxindoles. The enantioselective Henry reaction between alkyl- and arylglyoxal hydrates and nitromethane catalyzed by Cu(II)-iminopyridine complexes takes place regioselectively on the ketone carbonyl group to give chiral tertiary nitroaldols with high functional group density and enantiomeric excesses of up to 96 %. Both aromatic and aliphatic glyoxals are suitable substrates for this reaction.

A new catalytic cycle for the enantioselective protonation of cyclic ketone enolates with sulfinyl alcohols has been developed. An enol trifluoroacetate that can be easily obtained from the corresponding ketone is used for the first time as an enolate precursor of a cyclic ketone enolate. In this method, the achiral alcohol plays two roles: it is involved, as is usual in catalytic asymmetric protonation reactions, in the turnover of the chiral proton source and also in the generation of a transient enolate through the reaction of its corresponding alkoxide with the enol trifluoroacetate precursor. A series of nine TADDOLs (=α,α,α′,α′-tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanols) 1a – 1i, have been tested as proton sources for the enantioselective protonation of the Li-enolate of 2-methyl-1-tetralone (=3,4-dihydro-2-methylnaphthalen-1(2H)-one). The enolate was generated directly from the ketone (with LiN(i-Pr)2 (LDA)/MeLi) or from the enol acetate (with 2 MeLi) or from the silyl enol ether (with MeLi) in CH2Cl2 or Et2O as the solvent (Scheme). Abstract The electrocarboxylation of halogenated acetophenones and benzophenones to the corresponding hydroxycarboxylic acids has been carried out in undivided cell equipped with aluminium sacrificial anode and using 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) as the solvent. The radical anion generated by the electro-reduction of the aromatic ketone is involved in several competitive reactions which lead to the formation of the target hydroxycarboxylic acid, the corresponding alcohol and pinacol and the de-halogenated parent ketone. Abstract Enantioselective protonation of 2-methyl tetralone enolate using a stoichiometric amount of 2-sulfinyl alcohol ( S , R s )- 1 as a chiral proton donor yields the corresponding chiral ketone with a high level of enantioselectivity, provided that the chiral proton donor (CPD) is regenerated with an achiral proton source (APS). In contrast, stereoselectivity was only moderate if catalytic CPD (0.2 equiv.) and an APS are used.

Both matched and mismatched diastereoselections have been observed in the aldol reactions of a range of chiral aldehydes with the dicyclohexylboron enolate of a chiral ethyl ketone related to l-erythrulose. As was previously observed in the corresponding aldol reactions with l-erythrulose derivatives, the Felkin−Anh model provides an adequate explanation for the stereochemical outcome of reactions with chiral α-methyl aldehydes. The synthesis of lipoxin A4 and B4 analogues (LXA4, LXB4) to gain access to stabilized inflammation resolving compounds is an important field of research.
