Dynamic spin-triplet order induced by alternating electric fields in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions

2021

Dynamic states offer extended possibilities to control the properties of quantum matter. Recent efforts are focused on studying the ordered states which appear exclusively under the time-dependent drives. Here we demonstrate a class of systems which feature dynamic spin-triplet superconducting order stimulated by the alternating electric field. The effect is based on the interplay of ferromagnetism, interfacial spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and the condensate motion driven by the field, which converts hidden static p-wave order, produced by the joint action of the ferromagnetism and the SOC, into dynamical s-wave equal-spin triplet correlations. We demonstrate that the critical current of Jos…

Microwave nanobolometer based on proximity Josephson junctions

2014

We introduce a microwave bolometer aimed at high-quantum-efficiency detection of wave packet energy within the framework of circuit quantum electrodynamics, the ultimate goal being single microwave photon detection. We measure the differential thermal conductance between the detector and its heat bath, obtaining values as low as $5\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{fW}/\mathrm{K}$ at $50\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{mK}$. This is one tenth of the thermal conductance quantum and corresponds to a theoretical lower bound on noise-equivalent power of order ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}20}\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{W}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at $50\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{mK}$. By measuring the dif…

Quadrupole moment of Fr 203

2017

The spectroscopic electric quadrupole moment of the neutron-deficient francium isotope 203Fr was measured by using high-resolution collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy (CRIS) at the CERN Isotope Separation On-Line Device (ISOLDE)facility. A remeasurement of the 207Fr quadrupole momentwas also performed, resulting in a departure from the established literature value. A sudden increase in magnitude of the 203Fr quadrupole moment, with respect to the general trend in the region, points to an onset of static deformation at N =116 in the 87Fr isotopic chain. Calculation of the static and total deformation parameters show that the increase in static deformation only cannot account for the o…

Towards a "perfect" Penning trap mass spectrometer for unstable isotopes

1992

A Penning trap mass spectrometer has been set up at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE/CERN for the mass determination of unstable heavy isotopes. The spectrometer should fulfil the following requirements: capture of external ions in high efficiency, high resolving power and accuracy, general applicability to all elements and isotopes available at the on-line facility.

Decays of110Rhand112Rhto the near neutron midshell isotopes110Pdand112Pd

1999

The decays ${}^{110}\mathrm{Rh}$ and ${}^{112}\mathrm{Rh}$ have been investigated using on-line mass separation with the ion-guide technique. Extended decay schemes have been constructed for both the low- and high-spin states in ${}^{112}\mathrm{Rh}$. Mixing ratios for the collective transitions from the ${2}_{2}^{+}$ and ${3}_{1}^{+}$ states in ${}^{112}\mathrm{Pd}$ have been measured by $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ angular correlation. The presence of two sets of ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states in the 1.1\char21{}1.4 MeV range suggests the existence of an intruder band, the energy of which is the lowest in ${}^{110}\mathrm{Pd}$ with two neutrons fewer than the mid…

Motor strategies and adiabatic invariants: The case of rhythmic motion in parabolic flights

2021

The role of gravity in human motor control is at the same time obvious and difficult to isolate. It can be assessed by performing experiments in variable gravity. We propose that adiabatic invariant theory may be used to reveal nearly-conserved quantities in human voluntary rhythmic motion, an individual being seen as a complex time-dependent dynamical system with bounded motion in phase-space. We study an explicit realization of our proposal: An experiment in which we asked participants to perform $\infty-$ shaped motion of their right arm during a parabolic flight, either at self-selected pace or at a metronome's given pace. Gravity varied between $0$ and $1.8$ $g$ during a parabola. We c…

Experimental and numerical investigations of a two-body floating-point absorber wave energy converter in regular waves

2019

Abstract This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the hydrodynamics of a two-body floating-point absorber (FPA) wave energy converter (WEC) under both extreme and operational wave conditions. In this study, the responses of the WEC in heave, surge, and pitch were evaluated for various regular wave conditions. For extreme condition analysis, we assume the FPA system has a survival mode that locks the power-take-off (PTO) mechanism in extreme waves, and the WEC moves as a single body in this scenario. A series of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations was performed for the survival condition analysis, and the results were validated with the measurements from exper…
