Coxsackievirus B (CVB) enteroviruses are common human pathogens known to cause severe diseases including myocarditis, chronic dilated cardiomyopathy, and aseptic meningitis. CVBs are also hypothesized to be a causal factor in type 1 diabetes. Vaccines against CVBs are not currently available, and here we describe the generation and preclinical testing of a novel hexavalent vaccine targeting the six known CVB serotypes. We show that the vaccine has an excellent safety profile in murine models and nonhuman primates and that it induces strong neutralizing antibody responses to the six serotypes in both species without an adjuvant. We also demonstrate that the vaccine provides immunity against …

Serotyping and genotyping of encapsulated Escherichia coli K1 sepsis isolates with a monoclonal IgG anti K1 antibody and K1 gene probes

1987

Among infectious diseases caused by E. coli the capsular type K1 plays a predominant role. E. coli K1 isolates account for 80% of cases of E. coli neonatal meningitis and 30% of E. coli sepsis strains. Serotyping of K1 strains has conventionally relied upon the use of K1-specific bacteriophages or serum agar methods with polyvalent anti K1 serum. In the study present here, 187 E. coli sepsis isolates have been analysed for production of the K1 antigen using K1 phages, K1 serum agar plates and Latex agglutination and ELISA using an IgG2a anti K1 monoclonal antibody. In total, 33 sepsis isolates (about 18%) were identified as K1 positive, with three of these strains proving negative in all te…

A serum fucolectin isolated and characterized from sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax

2001

A lectin specific for fucose and galactose was isolated by affinity chromatography on Sepharose CL-6B from the serum of Dicentrarchus labrax. The hemagglutinating activity against rabbit erythrocytes was calcium-independent, and reached its maximum at 37 degrees C. Two protein components were found in the hemagglutinating fractions eluted from the Sepharose column. Only the 34 kDa component (DLL2) eluted from the polyacrylamide gels (SDS-PAGE) showed agglutinating activity against rabbit erythrocytes. SDS-PAGE, in non-reducing conditions, revealed a single 66 kDa protein that reacted with antibodies to the 34 kDa component. Therefore, a dimeric structure stabilized by disulfide bonds can be…

OPLA scaffold, collagen I, and horse serum induce a higher degree of myogenic differentiation of adult rat cardiac stem cells

2009

In the last few years, a major goal of cardiac research has been to drive stem cell differentiation to replace damaged myocardium. Several research groups have attempted to differentiate potential cardiac stem cells (CSCs) using bi- or three-dimensional systems supplemented with growth factors or molecules acting as differentiating substances. We hypothesize that these systems failed to induce a complete differentiation because they lacked an architectural space. In the present study, we isolated a pool of small proliferating and fibroblast-like cells from adult rat myocardium. The phenotype of these cells was assessed and the characterized cells were cultured in a collagen I/OPLA scaffold …

The critical concentration of C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) in human serum preventing auto-activation of the first component of complement (C1)

2005

C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) was depleted from normal human serum (NHS) at 4 degrees C by affinity chromatography with a monoclonal anti-C1-INH antibody (mAb 13 E1) coupled to CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B. The C1-INH-depleted serum (C1-INH-depl-HS) had normal levels of C1, C4, and CH 50 and C1-INH concentration was less than 10% of normal (15 microg/ml in C1-INH-depl-HS compared to 230 microg/ml in NHS). C1-auto-activation in C1-INH-depl-HS was followed by measuring C4-consumption in a haemolytic assay and by detection of activated C1s in a C1s-ELISA. After a lag phase of 10-20 min, C1-auto-activation in C1-INH depl-HS occurred and reached its maximum after 40 min at 37 degrees C. In contr…

Childhood exposure to parental alienation practices: a socio-educational analysis

2020

Abstract: Objective. To carry out a study about family alienation practices and the extent to which they affect minors as they are exposed to such practices. Methodology. A qualitative research approach is used. In order to conduct this research, a case study made up of five families who attend the Specialised Family and Infancy Service in Spain was carried out. Results and conclusions. The obtained results revealed the high degree of effect on the family members who made up the sample due to the conflicts that legal separation or divorce procedures cause. It is important to ensure that the fundamental right of minors are suitably related to both their mothers and fathers by maintaining all…

Set valued integrability in non separable Fréchet spaces and applications

2016

AbstractWe focus on measurability and integrability for set valued functions in non-necessarily separable Fréchet spaces. We prove some properties concerning the equivalence between different classes of measurable multifunctions. We also provide useful characterizations of Pettis set-valued integrability in the announced framework. Finally, we indicate applications to Volterra integral inclusions.

Validation of a temperature emissivity separation hybrid method from airborne hyperspectral scanner data and ground measurements in the SEN2FLEX fiel…

2008

This paper presents an assessment of the performance of a hybrid method that allows a simultaneous retrieval of land-surface temperature (LST) and emissivity (LSE) from remotely-sensed data. The proposed method is based on a synergistic usage of the split-window (SW) algorithm and the two-temperature method (TTM) and combines the advantages of both procedures while mitigating their drawbacks. The method was implemented for thermal channels 76 (10.56 µm) and 78 (11.72 µm) of the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS), which was flown over the Barrax test site (Albacete, Spain) in the second week of July 2005, within the framework of the Sentinel-2 and Fluorescence Experiment (SEN2FLEX) field c…

Homogeneous Suslinian Continua

2011

AbstractA continuumis said to be Suslinian if it does not contain uncountably many mutually exclusive non-degenerate subcontinua. Fitzpatrick and Lelek have shown that a metric Suslinian continuum X has the property that the set of points at which X is connected im kleinen is dense in X. We extend their result to Hausdorff Suslinian continua and obtain a number of corollaries. In particular, we prove that a homogeneous, non-degenerate, Suslinian continuum is a simple closed curve and that each separable, non-degenerate, homogenous, Suslinian continuum is metrizable.
