Agent assisted interactive algorithm for computationally demanding multiobjective optimization problems

2015

Abstract We generalize the applicability of interactive methods for solving computationally demanding, that is, time-consuming, multiobjective optimization problems. For this purpose we propose a new agent assisted interactive algorithm. It employs a computationally inexpensive surrogate problem and four different agents that intelligently update the surrogate based on the preferences specified by a decision maker. In this way, we decrease the waiting times imposed on the decision maker during the interactive solution process and at the same time decrease the amount of preference information expected from the decision maker. The agent assisted algorithm is not specific to any interactive me…

Impact of membrane addition for effluent extraction on the performance and sludge characteristics of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors treatin…

2015

Abstract In this study, the impact of membrane incorporation for effluent extraction on the performance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating municipal wastewater was investigated in terms of system performance and sludge characteristics. A laboratory-scale system was operated in two different operational stages: (i) as a sole UASB reactor and (ii) as an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). Membrane incorporation induced an accumulation of fine particles and a decrease in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), resulting in a decrease in particle size distribution (PSD) and, thus, a drop in sludge settleability. Deterioration of sludge settleability led to an inc…

Pattern Dystrophy of the Macula in a Case of Steinert Disease

2013

Introduction: Myotonic dystrophies are typically associated with ocular complications like ptosis, weakness of the ocular muscle and cataracts, but also with less recognized retinal changes. Case Report: A 41-year-old female with type 1 myotonic dystrophy complained of progressive vision loss. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of typical bilateral polychromatic cataract with posterior subcapsular component. Dilated fundus examination was remarkable for bilateral macular depigmented changes. Multimodal imaging analysis of the macula suggested the presence of a butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy. &l…

Competitive selection in mono-, di- and tri-genotype cultures of Drosophila melanogaster

2009

Viability and larva-to-adult development of three strains of Drosophila melanogaster (one wild strain and two eye mutant strains: cardinal and sepia) were studied under three different situations: A. Monocultures of wild, cardinal and sepia respectively. B. Dicultures with the combinations wild/cardinal, wild/sepia and cardinal/sepia respectively. Seven points of different genetical composition were chosen for each of the three systems. C. Tricultures with wild/cardinal/sepia. Seventy composition points were chosen. The points arranged in a three dimensional diagram with the axes wild, cardinal and sepia, make up an equilateral triangle hyperplane. An analysis of optimal density and intrins…

«Bella mia fiamma, addio / Resta, o cara» tra Jommelli e Mozart: osservazioni e ipotesi sull’aria K. 528

2012

Mozart wrote the scena and aria K. 528 in Prague in 1787 for the singer Josepha Duschek. As previously known, this wonderful page is based on a text taken from “Cerere placata”, a “festa teatrale” created in Naples in 1772 by the man of letters and scientist Michele Sarcone and the renowned “maestro di cappella” Niccolò Jommelli to celebrate the birth of the first daughter of king Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. The article reconstructs in detail the circumstances of the Neapolitan performance, and shows that Jommelli’s setting of Titano’s recitative and aria “Bella mia fiamma, addio” / “Resta, o cara; acerba morte” enjoyed a large success and circulated as an autonomous piece. A comparison betwee…

Competing factors on the frequency separation between the OH stretching modes in water

2015

Abstract Recent simulations demonstrated that the inhomogeneous broadening as observed in the vibrational spectra of liquid water at ambient conditions can be viewed as a large vibrational splitting of symmetric and asymmetric OH stretching modes, due to the asymmetry of the local hydrogen-bonding network [J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2013, 4(19), pp 3245–3250]. In this work, we show that the finite temperature and the liquid phase do not only modulate the local hydrogen-bonding asymmetry of water molecules, but also the intramolecular coupling strength. These two factors compete together in the determination of the overall magnitude of the frequency separation between the two OH stretching modes …

D2 and H2 adsorption capacity and selectivity in CHA zeolites: Effect of Si/Al ratio, cationic composition and temperature

2020

International audience; The work deals with the effect of composition of CHA zeolites on the adsorption and separation of H2 and D2 under cryogenic temperatures. In the first part of this work the effect of Si/Al ratio and cationic composition on single gas adsorption of H2 and D2 was studied at 77.4 K. It was found that the adsorption capacities increase with Al content up to Si/Al = 2.1. Unexpectedly, Na-CHA zeolite with the highest Al content (Si/Al = 1.1) adsorbs only negligible amount because of the collapse of the zeolite structure upon dehydration at 400°C. The Na-and Li-containing chabazites with Si/Al = 2.1 possess similar adsorption capacities. In contrast, progressive replacement…
