Joseph Conrad's Adventure With English
2022
This article discusses Conrad’s Anglophone linguistic identity to show how writing became his “promised land” and fictional homeplace. This fictional retreat reflects his childhood experience, (connected with his Polish background), hopes, and fears, but it is likewise refracted through episodes of his later life. Conrad’s own articulation of his complex relation to English, England, and his own nationality, reveals his outlook on literature and language: “When speaking, writing or thinking in English the word Home always means for me the hospitable shores of Great Britain” (Collected Letters 1:12) and “Both at sea and on land, my point of view is English, from which the conclusion should n…
Operāciju māsu tehnisko prasmju nodrošināšana
2018
Bakalaura tēma ir “Operāciju māsu tehnisko prasmju nodrošināšana”. Pētījuma mērķis ir izzināt operāciju māsu tehnisko prasmju nodrošināšanu pirmsoperācijas sagatavošanās periodā. Pētījuma uzdevumi ir: 1.apkopot un analizēt literatūras avotus par operāciju māsu tehniskajām prasmēm, 2.analizēt Patrīcijas Benneres māszinību teoriju, 3.izstrādāt pētījuma instrumentu- novērošanas protokolu, 4.veikt pilotpētījumu un pētījumu, 5.apkopot un analizēt iegūtos datus, 6.izdarīt secinājumus. Pētījuma jautājums – kā operāciju māsas nodrošina tehniskās prasmes pirmsoperācijas periodā? Pētniecības instruments – novērošanas protokols. Pētījuma ietvaros tika novērotas 20 operāciju māsas. Pētījuma rezultātu a…
Noise-induced phenomena in transient dynamics of short and long Josephson junctions
2008
The investigation of nonlinear properties of Josephson junctions (JJs) is very important due to their broad applications in logic devices. Currently, all Josephson junctions are manufactured with the use of optical and electronic lithography, and they can always be considered as distributed. Moreover great interest recently has attracted, from theoretical and experimentally point of view, the investigation of the influence of thermal fluctuations in macroscopic quantum phenomena of short and long Josephson junctions. Particularly the role of the noise on the life time of the superconductive state has been subject of many investigations. In fact for some devices, as the rapid single flux qua…
Perceptual contents : a study on the nature of the contents of perceptual experience
2013
The aim of the thesis is to examine various views that have been advocated in contemporary discussions concerning the content of perceptual experiences. The nature of the contents posited in those views is the focus of this study. In the views that are discussed here, perceptual contents have been argued to be either conceptual, externalist, nonconceptual or particular. In this thesis, John McDowell is presented as the proponent of conceptual content, Jeff Speaks as the proponent of externalist content, Christopher Peacocke as the proponent of abstract nonconceptual contents, and Tim Crane as the proponent of particular nonconceptual content. The revised view of John McDowell, as well as th…
ICA and stochastic volatility models
2016
We consider multivariate time series where each component series is an unknown linear combination of latent mutually independent stationary time series. Multivariate financial time series have often periods of low volatility followed by periods of high volatility. This kind of time series have typically non-Gaussian stationary distributions, and therefore standard independent component analysis (ICA) tools such as fastICA can be used to extract independent component series even though they do not utilize any information on temporal dependence. In this paper we review some ICA methods used in the context of stochastic volatility models. We also suggest their modifications which use nonlinear…
Signal dimension estimation in BSS models with serial dependence
2022
Many modern multivariate time series datasets contain a large amount of noise, and the first step of the data analysis is to separate the noise channels from the signals of interest. A crucial part of this dimension reduction is determining the number of signals. In this paper we approach this problem by considering a noisy latent variable time series model which comprises many popular blind source separation models. We propose a general framework for the estimation of the signal dimension that is based on testing for sub-sphericity and give examples of different tests suitable for time series settings. In the inference we rely on bootstrap null distributions. Several simulation studies are…

Deadlock in corporate governance: Finding a common strategy for private telephone companies, 1978–1998
2017
This paper looks at how a group of small, incumbent private telephone companies complied with the international convergence of market structures. The existing research has mainly focused on large national incumbents, assuming a transition to multinational enterprise. This development process is often associated with privatisation policies and various institutional factors. The article tests these assumptions using a case study of the network of Finnish local telephone companies. It looks at the development of an interfirm network, its perspectives on the different phases of the deregulation process, and how the network tried to regenerate itself but failed to form a unified corporate struct…
