Model selection using limiting distributions of second-order blind source separation algorithms

Signals, recorded over time, are often observed as mixtures of multiple source signals. To extract relevant information from such measurements one needs to determine the mixing coefficients. In case of weakly stationary time series with uncorrelated source signals, this separation can be achieved by jointly diagonalizing sample autocovariances at different lags, and several algorithms address this task. Often the mixing estimates contain close-to-zero entries and one wants to decide whether the corresponding source signals have a relevant impact on the observations or not. Detecting invisible details and separating mixed evidence is critical for forensic inspection. If this can be done reliably and fast at the crime scene, irrelevant objects do not require further examination at the laboratory. This will speed up the inspection process and release resources for other critical tasks. This article reports on tests which have been carried out at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland together with the Central Finland Police Department and the National Bureau of Investigation for detecting and separating forensic details with hyperspectral technology. Minkälainen on suomalaisten nuorten visuaalinen lukutaito, kun katseltavana on kuvataidetta? Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan nuorten tapoja puhua taidekokemuksestaan taidekuvien katselutilanteissa tehdyn kyselyn sekä haastattelujen avulla. Tutkimuksessa pohditaan mm. nuorten käsitystä aidosta suomalaisesta maisemasta ja tarkastellaan, minkä tyyppinen taide voi vedota erilaisiin yleisöihin. Tavoitteena ei ole etsiä oikeita tai vääriä taiteen vastaanottotapoja, vaan piirtää alustavaa kuvaa taidekokemusten sanallistamisestasuomalaisessa kulttuurissa.
