Evidence for molecular-cluster states in222Th

1983

The groundstate and a negative parity band of222Th have been observed in the208Pb (180, 4n)222Th reaction by conversion electron and γ-ray spectroscopy identifying the evaporation residues in a recoil separator. The de-excitation pattern is characterized by strong El transitions interconnecting the levels of alternating parity. The yrast levels may be interpreted as a molecularcluster band.

Spectroscopy ofAt201including the observation of a shears band and the29/2+isomeric state

2015

The excited states of $^{201}\mathrm{At}$ were studied and an isomeric $29/{2}^{+}$ state $[{T}_{\textonehalf{}}=3.39(9)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}]$ was identified by using a fusion-evaporation reaction, a gas-filled recoil separator, and recoil gating techniques. The $29/{2}^{+}$ state is suggested to originate from the $\ensuremath{\pi}({h}_{9/2})\ensuremath{\bigotimes}|^{200}\mathrm{Po};{11}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ configuration, and it decays through the 269- and 339-keV $E2$- and $E3$-type transitions, respectively. Moreover, a cascade of magnetic dipole transitions that is suggested to originate from a shears band was observed by using recoil-…

Liquid-scintillation detection of preseparated 257Rf with the SISAK-system

2005

Abstract The fast liquid–liquid extraction system SISAK with continuous liquid scintillation detection was coupled to the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator to enable studies of the chemical properties of α -decaying transactinide elements. The preseparated transactinide 257Rf (4.7 s), was transported via a He/KCl-jet directly into the scintillation solution. This permitted the first unambiguous detection of transactinide atoms by the means of the α -liquid scintillation detectors of the SISAK-system. During the experiment, 89 257Rf atoms were observed. The type of events observed correspond well with the expectations based on half-lives, decay branches and transport- and hold-up times. The succ…

The JUROGAM 3 spectrometer

2020

AbstractThe jurogam 3 spectrometer has been constructed for in-beam $$\gamma $$γ-ray spectroscopy experiments in the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. jurogam 3 consists of germanium-detector modules in a compact geometry surrounding a target to measure $$\gamma $$γ rays emitted from radioactive nuclei. jurogam 3 can be employed in conjunction with one of two recoil separators, the mara vacuum-mode separator or the ritu gas-filled separator, and other ancillary devices.

Fusion reaction Ca48+Bk249 leading to formation of the element Ts ( Z=117 )

2019

The heaviest currently known nuclei, which have up to 118 protons, have been produced in 48Ca induced reactions with actinide targets. Among them, the element tennessine (Ts), which has 117 protons, has been synthesized by fusing 48Ca with the radioactive target 249Bk, which has a half-life of 327 d. The experiment was performed at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Two long and two short α decay chains were observed. The long chains were attributed to the decay of 294Ts. The possible origin of the short-decay chains is discussed in comparison with the known experimental data. They are found to fit with the decay chain patterns attributed to 293Ts. The present experimental results confi…

In-beam electron spectrometer used in conjunction with a gas-filled recoil separator

2004

The conversion-electron spectrometer SACRED has been redesigned for use in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator. The system allows in-beam recoil-decay-tagging (RDT) measurements of internal conversion electrons. The performance of the system using standard sources and in-beam is described.

IRiS—Exploring new frontiers in neutron-rich isotopes of the heaviest elements with a new Inelastic Reaction Isotope Separator

2011

Abstract A dedicated Inelastic Reaction Isotope Separator (IRiS) for multi-nucleon transfer products will be designed and installed at GSI. Research at IRiS will focus on the investigation of new neutron-rich isotopes of the heaviest elements, study of which will advance various research fields, such as nuclear chemistry, nuclear and atomic physics, as well as nuclear astrophysics. The scientific motivation for this project and the alternative design options for the separator and its main components are discussed.

New ion-guide for the production of beams of neutron-rich nuclei between Z=20–28

2005

It has been shown for the first time that quasi- and deep-inelastic reactions can be successfully incorporated into the conventional Ion-Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) technique. This is of particular interest for characterizing the decay properties of refractory elements and is applied to neutron rich nuclei between Z = 20-28. As a first step of this project, the kinematics of quasi- and deep-inelastic reactions, such as {sup 197}Au({sup 65}Cu,X)Y, were studied. Based on these studies, a specialized IGISOL target chamber was designed and built. This chamber was tested in on- and off-line conditions at the Jyvaskyla IGISOL facility. Yields of radioactive, projectile-like species s…

α-decay studies of the francium isotopes198Fr and199Fr

2013

Very neutron deficient francium isotopes have been produced in fusion evaporation reactions using ${}^{60}$Ni ions on ${}^{141}$Pr targets. The gas-filled recoil separator RITU was employed to collect the fusion products and to separate them from the scattered beam. The activities were implanted into a position sensitive silicon detector after passing through a gas-counter system. The isotopes were identified using spatial and time correlations between the implants and the decays. Two $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle activities, with ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=7613(15)$ keV and ${T}_{1/2}$ $=$ (${15}_{\ensuremath{-}5}^{+12}$) ms and ${E}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}=7684(15)$ keV and ${T}_{1/2}$ $=$…
