Role of causality in the evaluation of coherence and transfer function between heart period and systolic pressure in humans

To elicit the effects of considering causality in the study of the interactions between RR interval and systolic pressure (SP) variability, the traditional noncausal cross-spectral analysis was compared with a causal method able to separate the two arms of the RR-SP regulatory loop. Estimates of coherence (K) and causal coherences from SP to RR (Ksr) and from RR to SP (Krs), and of noncausal (G) and causal (Gsr) baroreflex gain were evaluated at 0.1 Hz in 10 healthy young subjects in the supine position and after head-up tilt. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor, which mediates toxic responses to environmental pollutants, such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and related compounds. Besides its well known role in induction of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, for instance CYP1A1, the AhR is also involved in tumor promotion in rodents although the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Additionally, the AhR is known to regulate cellular proliferation, which might result in either inhibition or stimulation of proliferation depending on the cell-type studied. Modification of Angular Kinematics and Spatiotemporal Parameters during Running after Central and Peripheral Fatigue

Fatigue causes kinematics modifications during running, and it could be related to injuries. The aim was to identify and compare the effects of central and peripheral fatigue on angular kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters during running. Angular kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters were evaluated using an infrared motion capture system and were registered during 2 min treadmill running in pre- and post-fatigue states in eighteen male recreational runners. Glutathione S Transferase Polymorphisms Influence on Iron Overload in β-Thalassemia Patients

Glutathione S transferase (GST) enzymes have an antioxidant role in detoxification processes of toxic substances. This role is determined genetically. Induction of the adrenoleukodystrophy-related gene (ABCD2) by thyromimetics.

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a peroxisomal disorder caused by mutations in the ABCD1 (ALD) gene. The ABCD2 gene, its closest homolog, has been shown to compensate for ABCD1 deficiency when overexpressed. We previously demonstrated that the ABCD2 promoter contains a functional thyroid hormone response element. Thyroid hormone (T3) through its receptor TRbeta can induce hepatic Abcd2 expression in rodents and transiently normalize the VLCFA level in fibroblasts of Abcd1 null mice. In a therapeutic perspective, the use of selective agonists of TRbeta should present the advantage to be devoid of side effects, at least concerning the cardiotoxicity associated to TRalpha activation. Chick embryo retina development in vitro: the effect of insulin.

In this paper we study the development of chick embryo retina cultured in vitro and the effects exerted by insulin. Retinas were removed from 7-day embryos and cultured in serum- and hormone-free medium for 7 additional days. Under these conditions retinal cells survived and underwent cholinergic differentiation, as previously ascertained by Hausman et al. (Dev. Brain Res., 1991, 59: 31-37). However, a great retardation of development was noted compared to uncultured control, 14-day retina.
