ON THE BOUSSINESQ HIERARCHY
2002
A new sequence of nonlinear evolution systems satisfying the zero curvature property is constructed, by using the invariant singularity analysis. All these systems are completely integrable and a pseudo-potential (linearization) is explicitly determined for each of them. The second system of the sequence is the Broer-Kaup system, which, as is well known, corresponds to the higher order Boussinesq approximation in describing shallow water waves.
The community of Cystoseira brachycarpa J. Agardh emend. Giaccone (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) in a shallow hydrothermal vent area of the Aeolian Islands …
2014
A Cystoseira brachycarpa community from a vent area off Panarea Island (Italy) was investigated in two sites at different pH values. At low pH, species richness and coverage were low and the community displayed a reduced reproductive capacity. Conversely, at normal pH, dense canopies of fertile C. brachycarpa were found.
Phaenocompsopogon pustulatus n.gen.n. sp., a calcareous alga from the lacustrine rotliegend of the Saar-Nahe Basin (SW-Germany)
1992
Phaenocompsopogon pustulatus n. gen. n. sp. is a calcareous freshwater alga, probably of rhodophycean affinity. The fossils are mainly known from one locality in the Lower Permian of the Saar-Nahe Basin. The algal remains form a packstone in the Reckweilerhof-Bank of the Altenglan Formation. The simple thallus branches irregularly y-shaped and is covered with abundant pustules. An axial canal is characteristic, as are distinct cell features of an inner and outer cortex surrounding a structureless medulla. Most fossils are silicified and often three-dimensionally preserved. The algae lived in a wave-dominated environment, probably in offshore shallow water. The limited occurrence suggests sp…
Shallow-donor impurities in indium selenide investigated by means of far-infrared spectroscopy.
1992
Shallow impurities in n-type indium selenide (InSe) have been investigated by means of Fourier-transform spectroscopy in the far-infrared region. Three electric dipole transitions have been identified: 1s-2${\mathit{p}}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, 1s-2${\mathit{p}}_{0}$, and 1s-3${\mathit{p}}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, corresponding to electrons bound to native donors and tin-, silicon-, and chlorine-related donors, whose ionization energies (17.6, 18.1, 18.8, and 19 meV, respectively) have been determined through the Guerlach-Pollmann model. That model was also used to calculate the oscillator strengths of those dipole transitions, and then to estimate the shallow-donor concentr…
Factors controlling hydrochemical and trophic state variables in 86 shallow lakes in Europe
2003
In order to disentangle the causes of variations in water chemistry among European shallow lakes, we performed standardised sampling programs in 86 lakes along a latitudinal gradient from southern Spain to northern Sweden. Lakes with an area of 0.1 to 27 000 ha and mean depth of 0.4–5.6 m located in low to high altitudes were investigated within the EC project ECOFRAME 1–4 times during June–October 2000–2001. Several variables like conductivity, alkalinity, abundance of submerged plants, concentrations of suspended solids, total nitrogen and phosphorus were latitude-dependent decreasing from south to north. Secchi depth, concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, suspended solids, …
Ab initio calculations of Nb doped SrTiO3
2010
We present and discuss the results of the large scale Hartree–Fock calculations of Nb impurities substituting for Ti ions in SrTiO3 using ab initio computer code CRYSTAL and several supercells containing up to 135 atoms. The local structure optimisation, the electronic charge redistribution, chemical bond covalence and the band-structure changes induced by the defect are analysed. According to the results of our calculations, Nb is a shallow donor; six nearest O ions are slightly displaced outwards from the Nb ion. The calculated bond population between nearest Ti and O ions (64 me) is much larger than that between Nb and O ions (8 me), since Nb impurity is more ionic than the host Ti.
Normal pressures and frictional tractions on shallow conical hopper walls after concentric filling: Predictions and experiments
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Chemical Engineering Science. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2012.11.028 A silo with a shallow hopper is designed to achieve the required silo capacity when the headroom available is limited, provided that the issue of segregation of stored particulate solids is not a problem. Several analytical models have been proposed to try to predict the design loads for such shallow silo hoppers to guarantee their structural integrity. In this study, a novel finite element analysis has been conducted to explore the development of pressures and tractions on the wall of a full scale shallow hopper when it is filled wit…
The FLO Diffusive 1D-2D Model for Simulation of River Flooding
2016
An integrated 1D-2D model for the solution of the diffusive approximation of the shallow water equations, named FLO, is proposed in the present paper. Governing equations are solved using the MArching in Space and Time (MAST) approach. The 2D floodplain domain is discretized using a triangular mesh, and standard river sections are used for modeling 1D flow inside the section width occurring with low or standard discharges. 1D elements, inside the 1D domain, are quadrilaterals bounded by the trace of two consecutive sections and by the sides connecting their extreme points. The water level is assumed to vary linearly inside each quadrilateral along the flow direction, but to remain constant …
Les sites du lit mineur de la Saône en Chalonnais (Saône-et Loire) à la fin du Bronze final
2017
The underwater archaeological campaigns carried out over twenty years, from 1970 to 1990, in the Saône valley, more particularly in the area of Chalon-sur-Saône, first by Louis Bonnamour and then by Annie Dumont, generated a considerable quantity of data concerning settlements, located on fjords or river banks. This documentation, stored at the Musée Denon in Chalon-sur-Saône, was the subject of new studies, initiated by Jean-Michel Treffort for the Ouroux-sur-Saône “Marnay” site and continued by Franck Ducreux, notably for the Chalon-sur-Saône “le gué des Piles” site. On this occasion most of the sites of the region having yielded protohistoric assemblages were reconsidered. This article p…
A New Small Drifter for Shallow Water Basins: Application to the Study of Surface Currents in the Muggia Bay (Italy)
2016
A new small drifter prototype for measuring current immediately below the free surface in a water basin is proposed in this paper. The drifter dimensions make it useful for shallow water applications. The drifter transmits its GPS location via GSM phone network. The drifter was used to study the trajectory of the surface current in the Muggia bay, the latter containing the industrial harbor of the city of Trieste (Italy). The analysis has been carried out under a wide variety of wind conditions. As regards the behavior of the drifter, the analysis has shown that it is well suited to detect the water current since its motion is marginally affected by the wind. The study has allowed detecting…
