The thiol switch C684 in Mitofusin-2 mediates redox-induced alterations of mitochondrial shape and respiration

2017

Mitofusin-2 (MFN2) is a GTPase in the outer mitochondrial membrane involved in the regulation of mitochondrial fusion and bioenergetics. MFN2 also plays a role in mitochondrial fusion induced by changes in the intracellular redox state. Adding oxidized glutathione (GSSG), the core cellular stress indicator, to mitochondrial preparations stimulates mitochondrial fusion by inducing disulphide bond-mediated oligomer formation of MFN2 and its homolog MFN1 which involve cysteine 684 (C684) of MFN2. Mitochondrial hyperfusion represents an adaptive stress response that confers transient protection by increasing mitochondrial ATP production but how this depends on the thiol switch C684 in MFN2 has …

On vortex shape in unbaffled stirred vessels as measured by digital image analysis

2012

In this work, digital image analysis coupled with a suitable shadowgraphy-based technique is employed to investigate the shape of the free-surface vortex that forms in uncovered unbaffled tanks stirred by either a D=T/3 Lightnin A310 or a D=T/3 Rushton turbine. The technique is based on back-lighting the vessel and suitably averaging vortex images over time. Data obtained show that the two different impellers give rise to quite different vortex shapes. A novel 2-parameter model is proposed that successfully describes vortex shapes obtained with both impellers.

Free vortex shape in Uncovered Unbaffled Stirred Tanks (UUST) agitated by Rushton turbines

2012

The main feature of unbaffled stirred tanks is the highly swirling liquid motion, which leads to the formation of a central vortex on the liquid free surface, when the vessel is operated without top-cover (Uncovered Unbaffled Stirred Tanks, UUST). In this work, original data on fluid dynamics characteristics of (UUST) agitated by a Rushton turbine are presented. In particular, digital image analysis is employed to accurately assess vortex shape and validate an original model for its description. The model describes vortex shape in the case of sub-critical systems (when vortex bottom is placed above the impeller plane) as well as in the case of super-critical systems (when vortex bottom fall…

Estimation of the mean crystal size and the moments of the crystal size distribution in batch crystallization processes

2016

International audience; A cascade high gain observer is designed to estimate the first four leading moments of the crystal size distribution (CSD) and the mean crystal size in batch crystallization processes. The proposed observer is based on a well-known transformation of the partial differential equation describing the CSD to a set of ordinary differential equations (the method of moments). Due to numerical difficulties resulting from the important differences in the magnitudes of the moments, a set of new variables is computed to allow a good estimation of the moments and thus the mean crystal size. In this work, only solute concentration and crystallizer temperature are used to estimate…

Detecting global and local hippocampal shape changes in Alzheimer's disease using statistical shape models.

2012

Item does not contain fulltext The hippocampus is affected at an early stage in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). With the use of structural magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, we can investigate the effect of AD on the morphology of the hippocampus. The hippocampal shape variations among a population can be usually described using statistical shape models (SSMs). Conventional SSMs model the modes of variations among the population via principal component analysis (PCA). Although these modes are representative of variations within the training data, they are not necessarily discriminative on labeled data or relevant to the differences between the subpopulations. We use the shape des…

A rare occurrence of bilateral C-shaped roots in mandibular first and second premolars diagnosed with the aid of spiral computed tomography

2014

The C-shaped canal system is an anatomical variation mostly seen in mandibular second molars, although it can also occur in maxillary and other mandibular molars. Such variation in the root canal anatomy is uncommon in mandibular first premolars and very rare in mandibular second premolars. The C-shaped canal is so named for the cross-sectional morphology of the root and root canal. The main anatomic feature of C-shaped canals is the presence of a fin or web connecting the individual root canals. Failure of the Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath to fuse on the lingual or buccal root surface is the main cause of C-shaped roots, which always contain a C-shaped canal. This case report describes …

Electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes: Coulomb excitation of Hg-182, Hg-184, Hg-186 and Hg-188

2019

The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass 182-188 Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The population of $ 0^{+}_{1,2}$01,2+, $ 2^{+}_{1,2}$21,2+and $ 4^{+}_{1}$41+states was observed in all nuclei under study. Reduced E2 matrix elements coupling populated yrast and non-yrast states were extracted, including their relative signs. These are a sensitive probe of shape coexistence and may be used to validate…

Morphological characterization of ejaculated cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) sperm

1999

The aim of this study was to give reference values for the frequency of morphological sperm abnormalities present in the semen from non-experimental cynomolgus monkeys as well as for the dimensions of sperm heads. Spermatozoa from the liquid portion of electroejaculates from 14 cynomolgus monkeys were air-dried as smears, fixed, and stained with Harris's Haematoxylin and subjected to visual analysis of morphology and computer-aided analysis of ten morphometric variables. The majority (83%) of sperm were morphologically normal. Tail defects were the most common (11%), and showed the highest variation between individuals, the values ranging between 4 and 23%. Head abnormalities consisted of l…
