Shared reading interaction in families with and without genetic risk for dyslexia: implications for toddlers’ language development

1999

Shared reading represents a unique context for language learning. Little is known, however, about the quality of shared reading and its developmental implications in families with reading disabilities. In the present study, these questions were addressed in the context of a longitudinal follow-up. Maternal interactional behaviors and children's participation in a book reading situation were analyzed at 14 months of age in a subsample involving 39 mothers who were diagnosed as reading disabled and had a familial background of reading difficulties (the RD group) and 89 normally reading mothers (the NR group) and their children. Information on the children's concurrent and subsequent vocabular…

Modeling the Early Paths of Phonological Awareness and Factors Supporting its Development in Children With and Without Familial Risk of Dyslexia

2007

The development of phonological awareness (PA) before school age was modeled in association with the development of vocabulary and letter knowledge, home literacy environment (HLE), children's reading interest, and beginning reading skill in children with and without familial risk of dyslexia. A total of 186 children were followed from birth to the age of 6.5 years. Of these children, about half had a familial background of reading difficulties (the at-risk group), and the other half came from families without such background (the control group). The data from several measures and assessment time points were analyzed within an SEM framework, and a latent analysis of growth curves was employ…

Simulation-Based Performance Study of e-Commerce Web Server System – Results for FIFO Scheduling

2013

The chapter concerns the issue of overloaded Web server performance evaluation using a simulation-based approach. We focus on a Business-to-Consumer (B2C) environment and consider server performance both from the perspective of computer system efficiency and e-business profitability. Results of simulation experiments for the Web server system under First-In-First-Out (FIFO) scheduling are discussed. Much attention has been paid to the analysis of the impact of a limited server system capacity on business-related performance metrics.

Achieving Fair Bandwidth Distribution in WiFi Networks: A Game Theoretical Approach

2011

International audience; Achieving fair bandwidth distribution among uplink and downlink ows in IEEE 802.11 infrastructure networks is a complex issue, due to the well-known features of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) which regulates the access to the shared medium. Indeed, the dynamic adaptation of the contention windows causes phenomena of short-term unfairness, while the use of homogeneous contention parameters among the contending nodes makes the aggregated downlink bandwidth equal to the uplink bandwidth of a single node. We propose a dynamic tuning of the contention parameters used by the nodes, based on simple network monitoring functionalities and rational strategies. Spe…

The sicilian cooperative system of wine production: the strategic choices and performance analyses of a case study

2020

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to verify whether, besides the traditional organisational models mainly implemented by wine-making cooperatives, more modern and hybrid organisational forms can be profitably applied within an increasingly competitive wine market. Design/methodology/approach The study outlined in this paper deployed a mixed method. Specifically, an archived analysis, a survey and a descriptive case study (including visits, interviews and documentary analysis) were the methodological techniques used in this study, which were “in series but integrated” between themselves. In this paper, the landscape of Sicilian wine cooperatives is described by collating and processing d…

Supporting a Pseudo-TDMA Access Scheme in Mesh Wireless Networks

2013

Wireless mesh networks appear a promising solution for pro- viding ubiquitous low-cost wireless access, but cannot rely on simple CSMA access protocols because of the critical inefficiencies that arise in topologies with hidden nodes. To overcome these limitations, some important protocol extensions based on synchronization and reservation mechanisms have been ratified. In this paper we show that an alternative approach to the standardiza- tion of new features and signaling messages for mesh networks can be the utilization of programmable nodes able to execute different MAC protocols programmed on the fly. Signaling messages are used only for disseminating the new protocol among the nodes. …

The frequency of parents’ reading-related activities at home and children's reading skills during kindergarten and Grade 1

2012

Abstract This longitudinal study investigated the associations between the frequency of parents’ reading-related activities at home and their children's reading-related skills during the transition from kindergarten to Grade 1. Longitudinal data were obtained for 1436 Finnish children (5- to 6-year-olds at baseline) and their mothers and fathers. 684 girls and 752 boys participating in the study represented four Finnish municipalities. The reading skills of the children were measured four times: at the beginning and at the end of their kindergarten year, and at the beginning and at the end of Grade 1. In kindergarten, decoding tests were administered individually. In Grade 1, group tests in…

Interpretation, Negotiation, Play

2022

Augmented reality (AR) picturebooks combine printed children's literature with augmented reality. This study examines the shared reading of the Finnish AR picturebook Mur, eli karhu (2016) by Kaisa Happonen and Anne Vasko. The main aim of the study is to explore the playful reading experience of three Finnish families with children between the ages of 4 and 6. Three main categories of engagement with the book are discussed in the article: interpretation, negotiation, and play. The findings of the study suggest that children are skilled users of mobile digital media but may not understand the content of AR without parental mediation. In addition, parents and educators are required to have su…

Understanding moderating effects in increasing share-of-wallet and word-of-mouth : A case study of Lidl grocery retailer

2018

This study examines how five moderating variables (the length of the customer relationship, following a company in print media and on social media, remembering online advertisements, and the customer’s age) affect the relationships between perceived value and loyalty and satisfaction and loyalty in the grocery retailing sector. A series of hypotheses were developed and tested with a sample of 2,072 discount retailer customers in Finland. The results support all the direct effects hypotheses and show that perceived value and satisfaction both have a positive effect on loyalty, measured as a share of wallet and word of mouth and that the effect of perceived value tends to be stronger in the s…

Biznesa pakalpojumu centru izveides motīvi un vietas izvēli ietekmējošie faktori

2018
