Multiple Cutaneous Metastases in the Chest from Prostatic Carcinoma

2013

We report a case of multiple cutaneous metastases from prostate cancer. A 78-year-old man with an 8-year history of prostate cancer had multiple nodular lesions in the chest. Histologically, the lesion showed an abortive glandular lumina and tall columnar cells with abundant cytoplasm. Immunohistochemical staining for AE1:AE3 cytokeratin cocktail, prostate-specific antigen, and prostate-specific acid phosphatase was positive in tumor cells, confirming the diagnosis of cutaneous metastases from prostate cancer. We report this case because of the rarity of cutaneous metastases from prostatic adenocarcinoma in the chest region.

Incompiute città di Palermo

2019

Pili Annulati Coincident with Alopecia Areata, Autoimmune Thyroid Disease, and Primary IgA Deficiency: Case Report and Considerations on the Literatu…

2012

Pili annulati is a rare autosomal dominant hair disorder clinically characterized by a pattern of alternating bright and dark bands of the hair, the bright bands appearing dark if observed by transmitted light. This pattern is due to the periodic occurrence of air-filled cavities along the hair cortex which scatter and reflect the light while precluding its transmission. A susceptibility region, including a possibly responsible Frizzled gene, has been mapped to the telomeric region of chromosome 12q, although a specific mutation has not been identified. The condition has sometimes been observed in concurrence with alopecia areata, and in this paper we report a case in whom the concomitant s…

Postsurgical Paracicatricial Cutaneous Satellitosis of Giant Cell Tumour of the Tendon Sheath, Localized Type

2011

Tenosynovial giant cell tumour (localized type) is a tumour of tendon sheaths and interphalangeal joints, affecting the digits and arising from the synovium. It is characterized by a proliferation of mononuclear cells and osteoclast-like polykaryocytes. Its propagation to the skin is an exceptional event, which can take place either in localized form in the fingertips (localized type) or in the rare diffuse form called giant cell tumour of the tendon sheath (diffuse type). We report here a case of giant cell tumour with cutaneous satellites, which appeared close to and around the surgical scar following the excision of the primary lesion, in a 9-year-old boy. In the cutaneous satellites, a …

The Disorienting Aesthetics of Mashed-Up Anthropocene Environments

2022

This paper describes the disorienting aesthetics of some environments that are characteristic of the Anthropocene. We refer to these environments as 'mashed-up' and present three dimensions - phenomenological, epistemological and narrative - of the aesthetic disorientation they can trigger. We then advance the suggestion that a rich, nuanced and meaningful aesthetic experience of mashed-up Anthropocene environments (MAEs) calls for a mode of appreciation grounded on performative practices of aesthetic familiarisation with particular MAEs and entities and processes thereof. Familiarisation with MAEs, we further note, can have disorienting codas of its own. It can reveal and highlight, rather…

Dynamical entanglement-transfer for quantum information networks

2004

A key element in the architecture of a quantum information processing network is a reliable physical interface between fields and qubits. We study a process of entanglement transfer engineering, where two remote qubits respectively interact with entangled two-mode continuous variable (CV) field. We quantify the entanglement induced in the qubit state at the expenses of the loss of entanglement in the CV system. We discuss the range of mixed entangled states which can be obtained with this set-up. Furthermore, we suggest a protocol to determine the residual entangling power of the light fields, inferring, thus, the entanglement left in the field modes which, after the interaction, are no lon…

Continuous-Variable Quantum Teleportation of Discrete-Variable Entanglement

2013

We experimentally demonstrate continuous-variable quantum teleportation of discrete-variable entanglement in the form of a split single photon. Entanglement is optimally transferred for finite resource squeezing by tuning the teleporter's feedforward gain.

Simulating long-distance entanglement in quantum spin chains by superconducting flux qubits

2014

We investigate the performance of superconducting flux qubits for the adiabatic quantum simulation of long distance entanglement (LDE), namely a finite ground-state entanglement between the end spins of a quantum spin chain with open boundary conditions. As such, LDE can be considered an elementary precursor of edge modes and topological order. We discuss two possible implementations which simulate open chains with uniform bulk and weak end bonds, either with Ising or with XX nearest-neighbor interactions. In both cases we discuss a suitable protocol for the adiabatic preparation of the ground state in the physical regimes featuring LDE. In the first case the adiabatic manipulation and the …
