Spherical top data system (STDS) software for the simulation of spherical top spectra

1998

Abstract The Spherical Top Data System (STDS) software package for the simulation of spherical top spectra is presented. It consists of a single UNIX script with self-explanatory arguments allowing the non-expert user to calculate spectra from the results of the high resolution analyses performed over the recent decades on this type of molecules. More than one hundred parameter files are presently available including various band systems of 16 molecular species (among which methane is the most documented) and various types of calculations: rovibrational energy levels, i.r. absorption, Raman scattering and Stark coefficients. STDS is freely accessible by anonymous ftp at jupiter.u-bourgogne.…

Characterization of the 3D information of Calyptogena shells

2003

We propose in this paper an application of multiresolution analysis techniques to extract information contained in the growth increments of a bivalve mollusk called: Calyptogena . The first stage consists in extracting a range image of the mollusk’s shell using a 3-D scanner. Applying a multiresolution analysis enables us to localize precisely those growth increments by preserving relevant details. Moreover, interesting spatial and frequency properties of the multiresolution analysis underline information contained on the shell. Intra-individual variation and inter-individual variations are compared to assume some conclusions as for the ontogenetic evolution of the animal such as periodicit…

Nonlinear Optical Characterization of InP@ZnS Core-Shell Colloidal Quantum Dots Using 532 nm, 10 ns Pulses

2021

InP@ZnS core-shell colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized and characterized using the z-scan technique. The nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption coefficients (γ = −2 × 10−12 cm2 W−1, β = 4 × 10−8 cm W−1) of these CQDs were determined using 10 ns, 532 nm pulses. The saturable absorption (β = −1.4 × 10−9 cm W−1, Isat = 3.7 × 108 W cm−2) in the 3.5 nm CQDs dominated at small intensities of the probe pulses (I ≤ 7 × 107 W cm−2) followed by reverse saturable absorption at higher laser intensities. We report the optical limiting studies using these CQDs showing the suppression of propagated nanosecond radiation in the intensity range of 8 × 107–2 × 109 W cm−2. The role of nonline…

Characterization of eggshell as limestone replacement and its influence on properties of modified cement

2022

Food industry is known to produce, as a side product, huge amounts of eggshell. “Green chemistry” is searching for efficient ways of recycling antropogenic waste materials including also eggshell which is composed mainly from calcium carbonate and small amount of protein membrane. It is challenging to apply powdered chicken eggshell in cement industry and replace natural limestone. The impact of organic component of eggshell on modified cement was not studied yet. In the current report experimental studies were performed on the impact of the added powdered chicken eggshell instead of limestone on cement properties. 10, 20, and 30% of powdered eggshell (by weight) was added to Portland cemen…

In vitro reconstitution of rotavirus transcriptional activity using viral cores and recombinant baculovirus expressed VP 6

1993

International audience; Purified baculovirus-expressed group A rotavirus VP6 polypeptide was shown to be active in the recovery of the transcriptase activity associated with the reconstitution of the single-shelled rotavirus particle. Recombinant VP6 polypeptide was able to restore the transcriptional activity in purified viral cores from both SA-11 and RF rotavirus strains. Recombinant group C VP 6 (Cowden strain) is capable of binding as a trimer to group A viral core particles but unable to restore the transcriptase activity, suggesting that the binding of the polypeptide to cores is not the only requirement to restore the transcriptase activity. The VP 6 group A polypeptide was shown to…

Bending effect on the risk for delamination at the reinforcement/matrix interface of 3D woven fabric composite using a shell-like RVE

2012

This paper presents a computational homogenisation-based technique for flexural effects in textile reinforced composite planar shells. An homogenisation procedure is used for the in-plane and the out-of-plane behaviour of three-dimensional woven composite shells, taking the in-plane periodicity of the material into account while relaxing any periodicity tying in the thickness direction. Several types of damage (matrix or reinforcement cracking, delamination, …) can appear in a composite material. In this paper, material non-linear computations are used to assess the importance of bending on the risk for delamination at the reinforcement/matrix interface. The normal and tangential stresses a…

Multi-scale analysis of shell growth increments using wavelet transform

1999

Abstract Shell increments contain information related to the evolution of the environment in which the organism grew during its biomineralization. To extract the information from variations in shell topography, a new and promising technique is presented, involving multi-scale analysis of the shell topography using a B-spline wavelet transform. An accurate non-contact optical system, based on laser triangulation, is used to map the shell surface. The resulting range image is treated as a grey-level image by using a multi-resolution approach based on the generalization of the cascade algorithm. This method allows reconstruction of non-subsampled images that correspond to the projection onto t…

A closed-form solution for natural frequencies of thin-walled cylinders with clamped edges

2016

Abstract This paper presents an approximate closed-form solution for the free-vibration problem of thin-walled clamped–clamped cylinders. The used indefinite equations of motion are classic. They derive from Reissner׳s version of Love׳s theory, properly modified with Donnell׳s assumptions, but an innovative approach has been used to find the equations of natural frequencies, based on a solving technique similar to Rayleigh׳s method, on the Hamilton׳s principle and on a proper constructions of the eigenfuctions. Thanks to the used approach, given the geometric and mechanical characteristics of the cylinder, the model provides the natural frequencies via a sequence of explicit algebraic equat…

Effects of ocean acidification on the shells of four Mediterranean gastropod species near a CO2 seep

2017

Marine CO2seeps allow the study of the long-term effects of elevated pCO2(ocean acidification) on marine invertebrate biomineralization. We investigated the effects of ocean acidification on shell composition and structure in four ecologically important species of Mediterranean gastropods (two limpets, a top-shell snail, and a whelk). Individuals were sampled from three sites near a volcanic CO2seep off Vulcano Island, Italy. The three sites represented ambient (8.15 pH), moderate (8.03 pH) and low (7.73 pH) seawater mean pH. Shell mineralogy, microstructure, and mechanical strength were examined in all four species. We found that the calcite/aragonite ratio could vary and increased signifi…
