Design and Characterization of a New MV PLC Coupler for Smart Electric Energy Systems
2018
This paper deals with the design, modeling and characterization of a new coupling system for medium voltage (MV) narrow band power line communications (NB-PLC). It exploits the capacitive divider of voltage detecting systems (VDSs) normally used to reveal the mains voltage presence, thus avoiding the use of dedicated MV couplers. The proposed coupling system was patented by the authors. In this paper, the modeling of the VDS capacitive divider is presented, using a proper characterization method. Moreover, the interface card design is described, based on simulation of the whole PLC transmission channel. Laboratory tests are also presented and discussed. More in detail, a frequency response …
On the error sequences of M-ary FSK modulation schemes over Nakagami-m fading channels
2012
In this paper, we have studied some important statistical properties of error sequences of M-ary orthogonal frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation schemes over Nakagami-m fading channels. We have derived the joint probability density function (PDF) of error sequences of arbitrary length. From the joint PDF, we have found an analytical solution for the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the error sequences. The correctness of the analytical expression for the ACF of error sequences has been confirmed by simulations, where the simulation results are obtained by using the sum-of-sinusoids principle. The derived joint PDF of error sequences is useful for the development of first-order and highe…
Local aromaticity mapping in the vicinity of planar and nonplanar molecules
2019
We report on nucleus-independent magnetic shielding (NICS) scans over the centers of six- and five-membered rings in selected metal phthalocyanines (MPc) and fullerene C60 for more accurate characterization of local aromaticity in these compounds. Detailed tests were conducted on model aromatic molecules including benzene, pyrrole, indole, isoindole, and carbazole and subsequently applied to H2 Pc, ZnPc, Al(OH)Pc, and CuPc. Similar behavior of three selected magnetic probes, Bq, 3 He, and 7 Li+ , approaching perpendicularly the ring centers, was observed. For better visualization of shielding zone over the centers of aromatic rings, we introduced a simple mathematical procedure: the first a…
Evaluation of Correlation between Sleep and Psychiatric Disorders in a Population of Night Shift Workers: A Pilot Study
2023
Background: Insomnia is the perception of inadequate, insufficient or non-restorative sleep. Of all sleep-related disorders, insomnia is the most common. It is important to remember that the sleep–wake cycle also plays a central role in the genesis of anxiety and depression. The aim of our study is to evaluate the association between sleep disturbances and anxiety and depression in a group of workers of both sexes who perform night shift work. Methods: Information on sleep disorders was collected by administering the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test to assess whether there were any differences between sex for those who…
The ALHAMBRA survey: An empirical estimation of the cosmic variance for merger fraction studies based on close pairs
2014
[Aims]: Our goal is to estimate empirically the cosmic variance that affects merger fraction studies based on close pairs for the first time. [Methods]: We compute the merger fraction from photometric redshift close pairs with 10 h−1 kpc ≤ rp ≤ 50 h−1 kpc and Δv ≤ 500 km s−1 and measure it in the 48 sub-fields of the ALHAMBRA survey. We study the distribution of the measured merger fractions that follow a log-normal function and estimate the cosmic variance σv as the intrinsic dispersion of the observed distribution. We develop a maximum likelihood estimator to measure a reliable σv and avoid the dispersion due to the observational errors (including the Poisson shot noise term). [Results]: …

Design of dispersion-managed fiber systems for transmitting chirp-free Gaussian pulses
2008
International audience; We present a general method to analytically design a dispersion-managed (DM) fiber system for any desired fiber (dispersion, nonlinearity and losses) and pulse (width and energy) parameters. This analytical design allows one to transmit chirp-free Gaussian pulses (for very long distances) in almost all kinds of DM fiber systems that have appeared so far in the literature, including systems with dispersion map length greater, equal or shorter with respect to the amplification period.
Pairwise effects of chlorine substituents on the13C NMR chemical shifts of dichlorobicyclo[2.2.1]heptanes (norbornanes)
1984
The 13C NMR spectra of nine dichlorinated bicyclo[2.2.1]heptanes (norbornanes) have been measured and assigned. The pairwise effects of chlorine substituents which cause deviations from the additivity of single-substituent effects were investigated and are discussed. The largest effect found is the high-field shift of carbons bearing vicinal cis substituents. In the case of geminal substitution deviations from additivity were found to be to low field and large in the γ, smaller in the β and negligible in the α chemical shifts. The observed deviations for 1,3-disubstituted cases vary from −3.2 to +1.1 ppm at different carbons, allowing no simple explanation. Replacement of α-hydrogen in a di…
