Cycloamphilectenes, a new type of potent marine diterpenes: inhibition of nitric oxide production in murine macrophages.

2003

The inhibitory effect of a series of 6 cycloamphilectenes, novel marine diterpenes based on amphilectene skeletons and isolated from the Vanuatu sponge Axinella sp., on NO, PGE(2) and TNFalpha production in murine peritoneal macrophages was studied. These compounds reduced potently nitric oxide production in a concentration-dependent manner with IC(50) values in the submicromolar range (0.1-4.3 microM). Studies on intact cells and Western blot analysis showed that the more potent cycloamphilectenes reduced the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase without affecting cyclo-oxygenase-2 expression. Among them cycloamphilectene 2, the unique compound bearing an exocyclic methylene group,…

From Missionary to Military Discourse: Economic Expansion and Rhetorical Shifting in the Nineteenth Century Adventure Story

2010

The essay aims at establishing the nature of the relationship between the development of the 19th century adventure story, the systematization of colonial enterprise and rise of imperialism and the construction of the concept of Britishness intended as a superior and missionary identity category. The analysis of Marryat’s Masterman Ready (1842), Ballantyne’s Coral Island (1857), Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1882) and Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines (1885) will show how the rhetorical pattern of the 19th century adventure story, with particular reference to space and characters, goes through transformations in accordance with the economic transitions the system undergoes shifting from mission…

Peptidases specific for proline-containing peptides and their unusual peptide-dependent regulation in Oenococcus oeni

2009

International audience; Growth of the lactic acid bacterium (LAB) Oenococcus oeni, which is involved in malolactic fermentation during the winemaking process, is stimulated by peptides originating from yeast. In this study, we investigated the impact of peptides on O. oeni growth, peptidase activity and the expression of genes encoding the studied peptidases. Low levels of PepN activity and very high levels of PepI activity were observed in O. oeni, whereas levels of PepX activity were intermediate. The level of biosynthesis of these O. oeni peptidases was shown to depend on peptides present in the culture medium. These results were confirmed by transcriptional analyses of putative pep gene…

“Symptoms associated with environmental factors” (SAEF) – Towards a paradigm shift regarding “idiopathic environmental intolerance” and related pheno…

2020

Health conditions characterized by symptoms associated with chemical, physical and biological environmental factors unrelated to objectifiable pathophysiological mechanisms are often labelled by the general term “idiopathic environmental intolerances”. More specific, exposure-related terms are also used, e.g. “multiple chemical sensitivities”, “electromagnetic hypersensitivity” and “candidiasis hypersensitivity”. The prevalence of the conditions varies from a few up to more than 50%, depending on definitions and populations. Based on evolving knowledge within this field, we provide arguments for a paradigm shift from terms focusing on exposure and intolerance/(hyper-)sensitivity towards a t…

Design of All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fiber on Silica Platform for Generation of Pulse-Preserving Supercontinuum Under Excitation a…

2017

We investigated numerically the possibility of all normal dispersion fiber design for near-infrared supercontinuum generation based on a standard air-silica microstructure. The design procedure includes finding of target dispersion profile and subsequent finding of appropriate geometrical fiber design by inverse dispersion engineering. It was shown that the tailoring of dispersion profile could increase the spectral width of generated supercontinuum while maintaining perfect spectral flatness. Conditions necessary for wide and flat supercontinuum generation as well as restrictions imposed by chosen materials were discussed. As a result of design and optimization procedure, an air-silica des…

Clinical, pathologic, and genetic features of massive soft tissue neurofibromas in a Sicilian patient

2008

Abstract CONTEXT: Lipase maturation factor 1 (LMF1) gene is a novel candidate gene in severe hypertriglyceridemia. Lmf1 is involved in the maturation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase in endoplasmic reticulum. To date only one patient with severe hypertriglyceridemia and related disorders was found to be homozygous for a nonsense mutation in LMF1 gene (Y439X). OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate LMF1 gene in hypertriglyceridemic patients in whom mutations in LPL, APOC2, and APOA5 genes had been excluded. RESULTS: The resequencing of LMF1 gene led to the discovery of a novel homozygous nonsense mutation in one patient with severe hypertriglyceridemia and rec…

Status and perspectives of atomic physics research at GSI

2003

A short overview on the results of atomic physics research at the storage ring ESR is given followed by a presentation of the envisioned atomic physics program at the planned new GSI facility. The proposed new GSI facility will provide highest intensities of relativistic beams of both stable and unstable heavy nuclei - up to a Lorentz factor of 24. At those relativistic velocities, the energies of optical transitions, such as for lasers.. are boosted into the X-ray region and the high-charge state ions generate electric and magnetic fields of exceptional strength. Together with high beam intensities a range of important experiments can be anticipated, for example electronic transitions in r…

Probing neutrino masses with future galaxy redshift surveys

2004

We perform a new study of future sensitivities of galaxy redshift surveys to the free-streaming effect caused by neutrino masses, adding the information on cosmological parameters from measurements of primary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Our reference cosmological scenario has nine parameters and three different neutrino masses, with a hierarchy imposed by oscillation experiments. Within the present decade, the combination of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and CMB data from the PLANCK experiment will have a 2-sigma detection threshold on the total neutrino mass close to 0.2 eV. This estimate is robust against the inclusion of extra free parameters in the refer…

Changes in nuclear structure along the Mn isotopic chain studied via charge radii

2016

The hyperfine spectra of $^{51,53-64}$Mn were measured in two experimental runs using collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. Laser spectroscopy was performed on the atomic $3d^5\ 4s^2\ ^{6}\text{S}_{5/2}\rightarrow 3d^5\ 4s4p\ ^{6}\text{P}_{3/2}$ and ionic $3d^5\ 4s\ ^{5}\text{S}_2 \rightarrow 3d^5\ 4p\ ^{5}\text{P}_3$ transitions, yielding two sets of isotope shifts. The mass and field shift factors for both transitions have been calculated in the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock framework and were combined with a King plot analysis in order to obtain a consistent set of mean-square charge radii which, together with earlier work on neutron-deficient Mn, allow the study of nuclear struc…
