Novel in-line fiber-optic filters and polarisers

2005

Novel in-line devices, based on a tapered fiber whose uniform waist has been metal-coated, are reported. The resonant excitation of a surface plasma mode of the metal film allows for the design of wavelength filters and polarisers

Photonic-crystal fiber-based pressure sensor for dual environment monitoring.

2014

In this paper the development of a side-hole photonic-crystal fiber (SH-PCF) pressure sensor for dual environment monitoring is reported. SH-PCF properties (phase and group birefringence, sensitivity to pressure variations) are measured and compared to simulated data. In order to probe two environments, two sections of the SH-PCF with different lengths are spliced and set in a Solc filter-like configuration. This setup allows obtaining the individual responses of the first and second fiber independently, which is useful for a space-multiplexed measurement. As the employed fiber is sensitive to pressure variations, we report the use of this configuration for dual environment pressure sensing.

Improving mid-infrared supercontinuum generation efficiency by pumping a fluoride fiber directly into the anomalous regime at 1995 nm

2011

Supercontinuum sources in the mid-infrared may found many potential applications to spectroscopy and material caracterization. Supercontinuum light extending up to 4000 nm has been efficiently generated in fluorozirconate glasses (ZBLAN) with 10.5 W power using an amplified nanosecond pulsed laser diode at 1550 nm [1]. As the dispersion wavelength of the fiber is closed to 1700 nm, pumping at 1550 nm does not directly allow generation of solitons. A first approach is thus to pump a piece of SMF fiber in the anomalous dispersion regime to generate the solitons and shift them to the anomalous dispersion regime of the ZBLAN fiber [1,2]. Another approach is to use a high power femtosecond laser…

Experiments with a fiber-based optical dipole trap for cold Cs-Atoms

2011

Pulling a standard optical fiber to a diameter of less than the wavelength of the guided light causes the light field to project slightly over the fiber boundaries in form of an evanescent wave. The latter can be used for light-matter-interactions in the vicinity of the surface of the fiber and therefore allows to perform quantum optic experiments.

Orientation of199mHg by optical pumping detected by ?-radiation anisotropy

1975

199mHg was produced and mass separated at the ISOLDE facility (CERN). Nuclear orientation achieved by optical pumping via the resonance line 6s21S0→6s6p3P1,λ=2537A was monitored by means of the anisotropy of theγ-radiation emitted in the cascade199mHg(I=13/2+) $${}^{199m}Hg(I = 13/2^ + )\xrightarrow[{M4}]{}{}^{199*}Hg(I = 5/2^ - )\xrightarrow[{E2}]{}{}^{199}Hg(I = 1/2^ - ).$$ 199*Hg(I=5/2−)199Hg(I=1/2−).

Glowing optical fiber designs and parameters

1997

Side-emitting optical fiber designs and main parameters have been studied. A simplified model to describe emission of the 'glowing' fiber is developed. Basic expressions for the emission parameters as functions of the input radiation intensity, distance along the fiber axis and scattering efficiency longitudinal distribution are given for several design modifications. The model assumptions have been checked experimentally by testing silica core side-glowing optical fiber samples.

Managing electrical energy storage systems and shiftable loads with an innovative approach in energy districts

2014

In this work, a power dispatch problem for a system composed of an aggregate of loads and an electrical energy storage system is considered. The approach to solve the optimal dispatch is innovative and shows good performances in limited calculation times. According to the more recent indications coming from the European distributors, the architecture for energy dispatch at distribution level will be hierarchical. The 'Aggregator' is the interface between groups of loads and the energy distributor and sends the individual consumers the desired load profiles, following which the user may gets a discount on the energy bill. On the other hand, the energy tariff may follow a given daily profile …

The Italian legal clinics movement: Data and prospects

2015

It is not more than 5 years since legal clinics were founded in Italian Universities: a very recent history indeed and similar to that of other Western European countries. I will try to explain this through some data collected by an inquiry that I ran in order to have a more detailed map of this phenomena and to conjecture its future evolution.

In the following paragraphs I will present the data inquiry and I will try to explain the process of establishing the Italian movement for legal education, its options and challenges.

It is worth pointing out why I use the term “movement”. What is going on in Italy, and I think elsewhere, is not simply the…

Sustainable Innovation as Competitive Advantage in the Era of Sustainability

2018

The challenges that sustainability raises in front of companies are nowadays bigger than ever, as their actions and performances are increasingly scrutinized and evaluated (by a plethora of different stakeholders) against a variety of sustainability-related expectations and standards. The paper aims to explore the universe of the most sustainable corporations—based on an analysis that corroborates these companies’ engagements towards sustainability (as declared on their websites) with their sustainability-related performances (as reflected in their scores—based on relevant KPIs—according to Corporate Knights’ Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations)—in order to find relevant insights on th…

The Moderating Role of Work-Related Rumination in Nurses’ Sleep Quality Trajectory During Morning Shift Work

2020

Abstract. This diary study investigated nurses’ recovery after transitioning to morning shift work (i.e., their short-term adaptation to shift work) by examining the change trajectory of sleep quality over the course of five consecutive morning shifts. Results of latent growth analyses ( N = 132) showed that nurses’ sleep quality started at low levels and increased rapidly in the beginning until it stabilized toward the end of the shift work period. Moreover, work-related rumination moderated the sleep quality trajectory. When rumination was low, nurses’ sleep quality showed a quadratic trajectory, whereas when rumination was high, sleep quality showed a flatter and linear trajectory, sugg…
