Abstract In this study, heat-shrinkable composites of electron beam irradiated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites with acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) were investigated. HDPE/NBR blends at a ratio of components 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 50/50 and 20/80 wt% were prepared using a two-roll mill. The compression molded films were irradiated high-energy (5 MeV) accelerated electrons up to irradiation absorbed doses of 100–300 kGy. The effect of electron beam induced cross-linking was evaluated by the changes of mechanical properties, gel content and by the differences of thermal properties, detected by differential scanning calorimetry. In most countries, PMV is the reference index for the assessment of thermal comfort conditions in mechanically conditioned environments. It is also the basis to settle input values of the operative temperature for heating and cooling load calculations, sizing of equipment, and energy calculations according to EN 16798-1 and 16798-2 Standards. The objective of this paper was to study the effects of different drying methods that are: microwave (MW), hot air (HA) and a combination of both (HY), on the 1H-NMR relaxation properties, shrinkage and volatile compounds of Golden Delicious apple slices. Fast field cycling NMR relaxometry reveals that the HA samples dried at different temperatures (65 and 75 °C) appear to contain less restrained water as compared to the sample obtained by MW heating at the same temperatures. Abstract Following the interesting arguments raised in a recent letter to the editor, about a paper recently published in this journal, the authors are happy to take a cue from them to clarify some facts that have not been sufficiently treated for space. After a description of the methods used, arguments regarding a blunt trauma on the right shoulder with consequent dislocation, the position of the hands on the pubis with brachial plexus injury, and the wrist nailing that caused retracted thumbs are discussed in detail.

Shrinkage efficiency bounds: An extension

Hansen (2005) obtained the efficiency bound (the lowest achievable risk) in the p-dimensional normal location model when p≥3, generalizing an earlier result of Magnus (2002) for the one-dimensional case (p=1). The classes of estimators considered are, however, different in the two cases. We provide an alternative bound to Hansen's which is a more natural generalization of the one-dimensional case, and we compare the classes and the bounds.

Long-term erosional responses after fire in the Central Spanish Pyrenees

Abstract This paper reports the results of a study on how fire effects water and sediment losses in the Central Spanish Pyrenees where land abandonment results in an increase of the scrubland and fire-affected surfaces. In 1991, two plots (control and burnt) were installed to collect runoff, suspended sediments and solutes. One of the plots was burnt (burnt-1) and the other was covered by shrubs and herbs (control). Sequence learning is a complex capability shown by living beings, able to extract information from the environment. Looking into the insect world, there are several examples where the presentation time of specific stimuli is considered to select the proper behavioural response.
