The HLA locus and multiple sclerosis in Sicily
2005
The authors report the analysis of HLA-class II allelic heterogeneity in a well characterized multiple sclerosis (MS) Sicilian dataset. Family-based association analysis revealed evidence for excess transmission to affected individuals for alleles HLA-DRB1*1501, DRB1*04, and DQB1*0302. When analyzed as haplotypes, the authors observed excess transmission for the DRB1*0400-DQB1*0302 haplotype. Sicilian patients share the HLA-DRB1*1501 susceptibility allele with affecteds living in continental Italy, but also display the allelic heterogeneity that characterizes Mediterranean populations.
Live nativity and brucellosis, Sicily.
2006
To the Editor: Worldwide, brucellosis remains a major zoonosis and an important cause of travel-associated illness (1). Brucellosis is transmitted to humans through the consumption of infected, unpasteurized, animal-milk products; direct contact with infected animal parts; or inhalation of infected aerosolized particles. We report an outbreak of brucellosis in a small village of the Ionic coast of Messina province (eastern Sicily). In 2003, health authorities in the Messina province were notified of 29 cases of brucellosis; 18 of the patients were members of 9 different families. All patients had observed a Nativity pantomime that used live animals and was organized by the local population.…
Incidence of multiple sclerosis in Bagheria City, Sicily, Italy.
2001
We investigated the incidence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in a Sicilian community located at sea level. The study was a retrospective search for MS patients. Incidence was studied in the period from 1 January 1985 to 31 December 1994. We searched for definite MS patients, according to Poser's criteria, among the population resident in Bagheria (Palermo province). There were 25 subjects affected by MS, of which 20 were incident MS patients. The average annual incidence was 4.4 per 100 000 persons (n = 453 385 person-years). The incidence increased over time (1985-1989 = 3.5, 1990-1994 = 5.3). A parallel decrease of the interval between onset and diagnosis of MS was observed (1985-1989, 3.7 ye…
Persistence on Anti-Tumour Necrosis Factor Therapy in Older Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Compared with Younger Patients: Data from the Si…
2020
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Older people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appear to have a lower response to anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) therapy, with more frequent complications than younger patients. The objective of this study was to assess persistence on therapy and the safety of anti-TNF therapy in older patients (aged ≥ 60 years). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the database of the Sicilian Network for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (SN-IBD), extracting data regarding IBD patients aged ≥ 60 years and controls < 60 years of age at their first course of anti-TNF treatment. Data concerning persistence on therapy over the first year of treatment (primary objective) together …
Significance of persistence of antibodies against Leishmania infantum in Sicilian patients affected by acute visceral leishmaniasis.
2012
The background of this article is as follows: Few data are available about the persistence of serum-specific IgG antibodies to L. infantum after acute VL. The objective of this article is to evaluate the persistence of antibodies against L. infantum in patients healed from acute VL, and the kinetic of the same antibodies observed in 2 cases of VL relapse and 2 cases of resistance to therapy. The methods which we used to obtain our objective are the following: 55 apparently immunocompetent, HIV-negative patients were examined for antibodies to L. infantum by IFAT over 14 years period, and we got the following results: Serum-specific IgG antibodies titers decrease slowly, but constantly. In t…
Scratches Removal in Digitised Aerial Photos Concerning Sicilian Territory
2007
In this paper we propose a fast and effective method to detect and restore scratches in aerial photos from a photographic archive concerning Sicilian territory. Scratch removal is a typical problem for old movie films but similar defects can be seen in still images. Our solution is based on a semiautomatic detection process and an unsupervised restoration algorithm. Results are comparable with those obtained with commercial restoration tools.
Pro-inflammatory status is not a limit for longevity: case report of a Sicilian centenarian
2020
Most studies on centenarians represent them as the best model of ageing. They are defined “delayers”, if they exhibit age-related diseases between 80 and 99 years, “survivors” if they show clinically demonstrable diseases before the age of 80 years, and “escapers” when they attain their 100th year of life without any common age-associated pathologies.
Mediterranean diet and healthy ageing: a Sicilian perspective.
2014
Traditional Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is a common dietary pattern characterizing a lifestyle and culture proven to contribute to better health and quality of life in Mediterranean countries. By analyzing the diet of centenarians from the Sicani Mountains and eating habits of inhabitants of Palermo, it is reported that a close adherence to MedDiet is observed in the countryside, whereas in big towns this adherence is not so close. This has an effect on the rates of mortality at old age (and reciprocally longevity) that are lower in the countryside than in big towns. Concerning the health effects of the diet, the low content of animal protein and the low glycaemic index of the Sicilian Med…
The Sicilian rock partridge: latest data on genetic integrity from four different relict areas
2021
Sicily (Italy) hosts a “relict”, endemic population of the birds Alectoris graeca whitakeri commonly known as Sicilian Rock Partridge. In the last decades, due to the risk of restocking with other European and Asiatic species for hunting purpose, a study was carried out to investigate the potential risk of hybridisation. The mtDNA control-region and nuclear microsatellites were genotyped. Due to the importance of the species, samples were mainly characterized by feather and stool samples, and rarely by carcasses found in the environment, from year 2011 to 2012. A panel of 7 microsatellite loci was validated. Three multiplexes that allowed the simultaneous amplification of 3 microsatellites,…
Nel serra serra dei capelli. L'amore in un manipolo di odii
2016
Viene ricordato dopo i duecento anni della morte, il poeta Giovanni Meli. Sono messe in evidenza le anacreontiche che raccontano dell'amore, della bellezza femminile in una nota cornice arcadica.
