Brothers, sisters and the rearrangements of property on the Sicilian island of Stromboli in the nineteenth century

This article focuses on property relationships among siblings, especially on sales and exchanges of land, houses and other items, on the small Sicilian island of Stromboli in the Aeolian archipelago during the nineteenth century. Stromboli's economy incorporated farming and seafaring activities. The ‘modular structure’ of houses and wealth was characterised by partible inheritance, with equal inheritance shares or endowments for both sons and daughters, which was permitted under the Civil Code of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Possession and volition in the development of modal meanings: a case-study from Sicilian

This article analyses two Sicilian modal constructions involving vuliri 'want' + infinitive and aviri a ‘have to’ + infinitive. They are used to express modal values, both non-epistemic and epistemic, and futurity. Based on Langacker's Cognitive Grammar assumptions, we describe the semantic network associated with each modal, as well as their semantic overlap. In addition, we describe how modal values interact with temporal-aspectual inflection. Our analysis shows that the epistemic values of vuliri are quite peripheral, while aviri a shows a high degree of polysemy, both in the non-epistemic and in the more abstract epistemic domain. Antioxidant activity of Sicilian Pistachio (Pistacia vera, L. var. Bronte) nut extracts and its bioactive components

Pistacia vera L. is the only species of Pistacia genus producing edible nuts. This paper investigates the antioxidant potential of a Sicilian variety of pistachio nut by chemical as well as biological assays and measured antioxidant vitamins and a number of antioxidant polyphenols in either the hydrophilic and/or the lipophilic nut extract. In accordance with the majority of foods, the total antioxidant activity, measured as a TAA test, was much higher (50-fold) in the hydrophilic than in the lipophilic extract. It is kown that the destruction of woods has been the reason of the beginning of"malaria". In the Middle Age there was a lot of forests in Sicily. In the province of Agrigento malaria was already kown especially in Cammarata in 1141; in the area of Burgic in 1172; in Licata in 1398 adin the south of Girgenti (Girgenti was the ancient name of Agrigento) in 1253. Huge expenses of water determined, between 1256 and 1379, the fight against malaria. In the XV and XV1 centuries the destruction of the Sicilian forests could be said systematically begun by the landowners, that had destined the land to the production of wheat. This study concerns the assessment of the rockfall risk for two strategic sectors of the Mount Pellegrino, one of the most relevant place in the city of Palermo. During the last two decades, several rockfalls affected the study area setting up a serious threat to the people, structures and infrastructures preventing the economic and social development. For these landslides a detailed GIS inventory was realized; the most dangerous rockfalls occurred within the two study sectors. AbstractDetailed field sedimentological and facies analyses have been performed in the Terravecchia Formation cropping out in NW Sicily, in order to differentiate and describe, for the first time, wave- and river-dominated shallow-marine (deltaic) siliciclastic successions. The latter were deposited filling syntectonic basins, developed between the late Tortonian and early Messinian time, within the wedge-top depozone of the Sicilian Foreland Basin System. Sicilian cave drawings from the Grotta del Genovese, Isle of Levanzo (west Sicily) ca. 12 000 B.C. show silhouettes of dolphins, tuna, groupers and bass which, together with remains offish (tuna, groupers, bass and others), limpets and oysters from Grotta dell Uzzo, north-western Sicily, indicate the importance of fish and shellfish in the diet of coastal populations of that time (Villari, 1992a, 1992b). Remains of turtles (Caretta caretta), tuna and sharks are evidence of fishing activity during this period (Villari, 1995).

Abstract The wedge-top depozone belongs to the innermost portion of a Foreland Basin System (FBS) ( DeCelles and Giles, 1996 ) and includes all sediments, typically coarse-grained proximal facies, that bury the active frontal part of a fold and thrust belt. Mesozoic and Paleogene clastic carbonates in deep-water successions outcropping in the Sicani mountains (central southern Sicily) represent debris-flow and turbidite deposits accumulated in slope/base-of-slope sectors of the Sicanian Basin, a Permian to Miocene deep-water sedimentary domain of Sicily.
