«Fetal monstrosities». A comparision of evidenze in Sicily in modern age

2013

In Sicily reflections on monsters and on ‘generative stumbles’ first appear in a treaty of the second half of the sixteenth century, containing one of the first medical-physiological descriptions of two-headed births and written in the verncular by the famous physiologist and anatomist Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia. It is a work which can be attributed to the season of excitement characterized, in the period after 1550, by an explosion of interest in teratological codification, driven by a wider taxonomic interest in the living and the inanimate, but it also contains some original features that make it a model and example of the contemporary state of the art of legal medicine, of which Ingrass…

Salute del re, salute del popolo. Mangiare e curarsi nella Sicilia tardomedievale

2013

Eat and self-care are two dimension strongly connected to the body, between need and pleasure. Two dimensions full of nuances social and local, religious and economic, that involve knowledge and different therapies depending on age and gender but also the so…

I.2 L’area Nord-Occidentale, in Carra et alii, Le aree funerarie fra isola e terraferma: esempi dalla Sicilia e dalla Sardegna, pp. 135-179

2015

Christian funerary evidence of Sicily and Sardinia are among the 3rd-4th century and 7th-8th. They were defined “useful fossils” to determine the incidence of the new religion in urban areas and the importance of the settlement spread over vast areas. The burial areas recognized in Sardinia are about one hundred; in Sicily they are more and more numerous; they are distributed along the route of the ancient roads and fall within the areas of competence of the diocese known by some letters of Pope Gregory the Great. They were divided into three categories: burial areas sub divo, rural and urban; burial underground areas, urban and rural; burial areas connected with a rural church or with a ma…

2016

The paper reconstructs an experience of cooperation between the University of Palermo and the Department of Cultural Heritage, Natural Heritage and Public Education of the Sicilian Regional Government, that took place at the end of 1970s. This experience is still regarded as a model of good practice based on the connection “culture and development” and focused on the recovery of traditional heritage. The author proposes an evaluation on short, medium and long-term effects on the Sicilian territory, dealing with notions such as memory and history, and discussing on the mechanism of objectivation of one’s own culture.

Identification of Energy Hubs for the Exploitation of Residual Biomass in an Area of Western Sicily

2017

Recent years have witnessed a marked reduction in financial incentives for renewable energy production in Italy as a consequence of the fact that the nation has already reached its energy policy targets for 2020, However, incentives still persist in certain sectors, such as those of specialized crops for biomass and residual biomass. In order to increase use-efficiency of biomass resources, careful study is needed of their characteristics, and their distribution within an area and over time: biomass use is of interest when production is concentrated in a given area and sufficiently available throughout the year. In order to assess the competitiveness of the biomass energy sector, the logist…

The transportation system in the Sicilian touristic development

2006

Nowadays the society is based on the people and goods mobility, so that results necessary guarantee the efficiency of the transportation system as accessibility and mobility in the territory. The history of tourism in a territory is tightly connected to the evolution of its transportation system; we can affirm that is not present a tourist place, archaeological monument or other tourist attraction if the same are not somehow accessible. In every case the logical bond between transports and tourism must not be found in the simple relationship cause-effect between the transport evolution and the economic development of a territory, but in the complexity of the interdipendence relationships be…
