Eucynodont teeth from the Late Triassic of Krasiejów, Southern Poland

2021

Recent discoveries of Mammaliamorph teeth in the Keuper of southern Poland have extended the global record of eucynodonts in the Late Triassic and revealed a significant diversity of the group at that time. Here,we expand on this record with the description of new cynodont postcanine teeth from the Krasiejów bone bed. They show the dental morphology typical for Dromatheriidae, with a single root and crown without cingulum. We assigned them to Polonodon woznikensis, described from Woźniki. None of the 38 teeth from Krasiejów and Woźniki exhibit signs of serious wear, potentially indicating a very fast rate of tooth replacement in Polonodon.

Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes with Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation and Study of Diabetic Nephropathy with Atrasentan : what …

2019

Albuminuria; Atrasentan; Canagliflozin Albuminuria; Atrasentan; Canagliflozina Albuminúria; Atrasentan; Canagliflozina In April 2019, two major Phase 3 randomized clinical trials were published that assessed primary renal outcomes in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes with Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation (CREDENCE) tested an already available antidiabetic drug, canagliflozin, and the Study of Diabetic Nephropathy with Atrasentan (SONAR) tested a novel molecule, the endothelin-1 receptor blocker atrasentan, both on top of renin-angiotensin system blockade. Both trials demonstrated significant nephroprot…

Isolation and characterization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants resistant to aculeacin A

1991

Aculeacin A is a lipopeptide that inhibits beta-glucan synthesis in yeasts. A number of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants resistant to this antibiotic were isolated, and four loci (ACR1, ACR2, ACR3, and ACR4) whose products are involved in the sensitivity to aculeacin A of yeast cells were defined. Mutants containing mutations in the four loci were also resistant to echinocandin B, another member of this lipopeptide family of antibiotics. In contrast, acr1, acr3, and acr4 mutants were resistant to papulacandin B (an antibiotic containing a disaccharide linked to two fatty acid chains that also inhibits beta-glucan synthesis), but acr2 mutants were susceptible to this antibiotic. This result …

G2/M checkpoint regulation and apoptosis facilitate the nuclear egress of parvoviral capsids

2022

The nuclear export factor CRM1-mediated pathway is known to be important for the nuclear egress of progeny parvovirus capsids in the host cells with virus-mediated cell cycle arrest at G2/M. However, it is still unclear whether this is the only pathway by which capsids exit the nucleus. Our studies show that the nuclear egress of DNA-containing full canine parvovirus. capsids was reduced but not fully inhibited when CRM1-mediated nuclear export was prevented by leptomycin B. This suggests that canine parvovirus capsids might use additional routes for nuclear escape. This hypothesis was further supported by our findings that nuclear envelope (NE) permeability was increased at the late stages…

Chasing the Origin of Viruses: Capsid-Forming Genes as a Life-Saving Preadaptation within a Community of Early Replicators

2015

Virus capsids mediate the transfer of viral genetic information from one cell to another, thus the origin of the first viruses arguably coincides with the origin of the viral capsid. Capsid genes are evolutionarily ancient and their emergence potentially predated even the origin of first free-living cells. But does the origin of the capsid coincide with the origin of viruses, or is it possible that capsid-like functionalities emerged before the appearance of true viral entities? We set to investigate this question by using a computational simulator comprising primitive replicators and replication parasites within a compartment matrix. We observe that systems with no horizontal gene transfer…

Reversible Supracolloidal Self-Assembly of Cobalt Nanoparticles to Hollow Capsids and Their Superstructures

2017

| openaire: EC/FP7/291364/EU//MIMEFUN The synthesis and spontaneous, reversible supracolloidal hydrogen bond-driven self-assembly of cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) into hollow shell-like capsids and their directed assembly to higher order superstructures is presented. CoNPs and capsids form in one step upon mixing dicobalt octacarbonyl (Co2CO8) and p-aminobenzoic acid (pABA) in 1,2-dichlorobenzene using heating-up synthesis without additional catalysts or stabilizers. This leads to pABA capped CoNPs (core ca. 5nm) with a narrow size distribution. They spontaneously assemble into tunable spherical capsids (d≈50-200nm) with a few-layered shells, as driven by inter-nanoparticle hydrogen bonds th…

Investigating the Role of Guanosine on Human Neuroblastoma Cell Differentiation and the Underlying Molecular Mechanisms

2021

Neuroblastoma arises from neural crest cell precursors failing to complete the process of differentiation. Thus, agents helping tumor cells to differentiate into normal cells can represent a valid therapeutic strategy. Here, we evaluated whether guanosine (GUO), a natural purine nucleoside, which is able to induce differentiation of many cell types, may cause the differentiation of human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and the molecular mechanisms involved. We found that GUO, added to the cell culture medium, promoted neuron-like cell differentiation in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. This effect was mainly due to an extracellular GUO action since nucleoside transporter inhibitors r…

First Data on the Mysid Community in the “Stagnone di Marsala” (Western Sicily)

2001

First data on the spatial and temporal distribution of the mysid community in the “Stagnone di Marsala” (western Sicily) from January to December 1996 are reported. The assemblage consists mainly of five species which are common in the Mediterranean Sea: Diamysis bahirensis (55.2%), Siriella armata (18.6%), S. clausii (15.8%), Mysidopsis gibbosa (9.8%) and Mesopodospis slabberi (0.6%). Population structure is described for each species and the reproductive period inferred. A sharp increase in abundance occurred in the spring, while the minima occurred during autumn-winter. The D. bahirensis dominated from March to October and S. clausii in the winter. A large difference, which was mainly qu…
