Infrared monitoring of underground CO2 storage using chalcogenide glass fibers

2009

International audience; An optical-fiber-based system suitable for monitoring the presence of carbon dioxide, so-called "greenhouse gas", is investigated. Since each pollutant gas shows a characteristic optical absorption spectrum in the mid-infrared (mid-IR), it is possible to detect selectively and quantitatively the presence of gases in a given environment by analysing mid-IR spectra. The main infrared signature of carbon dioxide gas is a double absorption peak located at 4.2 μm. Chalcogenide optical fibers, which can transmit light in the 1-6 μm range, are well-adapted for CO2 analysis. In this wavelength range, they show attenuation losses that compare favourably with other types of fi…

Scene-based spectral calibration assessment of high spectral resolution imaging spectrometers

2009

An accurate knowledge of the spectral calibration of imaging spectrometers is required for optimum data processing and interpretation. The scene-based spectral characterization of imaging spectrometers is frequently necessary to update or replace the pre-flight laboratory-based spectral characterization supplied by the data provider. An automatic method for the estimation of spectral calibration parameters (channel position and bandwidth) at atmospheric absorption regions from high spectral resolution imaging spectrometers (spectral sampling interval below 5 nm) is presented in this contribution. The method has been tested on two commercial instruments with spectral sampling intervals below…

Sprectroradiometric characteristics of inland water bodies infestated by Oscillatoria rubescens algae

2010

In December 2006 blooms of Oscillatoria rubescens were found in the reservoir Prizzi in Sicily. Oscillatoria is a genus of filamentous alga comprising approximately 6 species, between these the O. rubescens is sadly famous since this organism produces microcystins which are powerful hepatotoxins. Firstly found in Europe in 1825 on Geneva lake, recently (2006) those algae has been find out in Pozzillo, Nicoletti e Ancipa reservoirs (Enna Province), as well as in Prizzi (Palermo Province) and Garcia reservoirs (Trapani Province). Toxins produced by those bacteria (usually called microcystine LR-1 and LR-2) are highly toxic since they can activate oncogenes cells causing cancer pathologies on …

Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP)-dependent modulation of gene expression signatures in cancer cells

2022

PTHrP is encoded by PTHLH gene which can generate by alternative promoter usage and splicing mechanisms at least three mature peptides of 139, 141 and 173 amino acids with distinct carboxy terminus. PTHrP may undergo proteolytic processing into smaller bioactive forms, comprising an amino terminus peptide, which is the mediator of the "classical" PTH-like effect, as well as midregion and carboxy terminus peptides that act as multifaceted critical regulator of proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis via the reprogramming of gene expression in normal and neoplastic cells. Moreover, a nuclear/nucleolar localization signal sequence is present in the [87-107] domain allowing PTHrP nuclear i…

Microwave signature for gas sensing: 2005 to present

2015

Abstract We present here the development and the implementation of a technique of gas detection involving a microwave transduction method. The use of low-cost sensors based on microstrip or coplanar structures, adapted to the microwaves domain, allows the sensitive materials deposition under various forms. The purpose of the study is to assess the interest of microwave transduction for gas detection. The choice of the sensitive materials concerns materials widely used in the field of gas sensing: the metal oxides (SnO2 and TiO2) as well as molecular materials like cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). In this article we shall apply to explain the principles of the microwave transduction before appr…

Search for WIMP Inelastic Scattering off Xenon Nuclei with XENON100

2017

We present the first constraints on the spin-dependent, inelastic scattering cross section of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) on nucleons from XENON100 data with an exposure of 7.64 ×103 kg .days . XENON100 is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber with 62 kg of active mass, operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy and designed to search for nuclear recoils from WIMP-nucleus interactions. Here we explore inelastic scattering, where a transition to a low-lying excited nuclear state of Xe 129 is induced. The experimental signature is a nuclear recoil observed together with the prompt deexcitation photon. We see no evidence for such inelastic WIMP-Xe…

Free fields via canonical transformations of matter-coupled two-dimensional dilaton gravity models

1998

It is shown that the 1+1-dimensional matter-coupled Jackiw-Teitelboim model and the model with an exponential potential can be converted by means of appropriate canonical transformations into a bosonic string theory propagating on a flat target space with an indefinite signature. This makes it possible to consistently quantize these models in the functional Schroedinger representation thus generalizing recent results on CGHS theory.

Nonlocal density correlations as a signature of Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes

2008

We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and nonhomogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.

An intrinsic characterization of the Schwarzschild metric

1998

An intrinsic algorithm that exclusively involves conditions on the metric tensor and its differential concomitants is presented to identify every type-D static vacuum solution. In particular, the necessary and sufficient explicit and intrinsic conditions are given for a Lorentzian metric to be the Schwarzschild solution.
