What does happen when an insect pest follows its host plant and viceversa?

2015

Invasive species are usually well known but only make up a small percentage of the European’s alien plants and insects. The ways these exotic species interact with our natural and cultural heritage are very complex and even some species considered invasive had and could have positive aspects on some European landscape and culture. A close look at the complicated relationship between non-native and native plants and insects in the Mediterranean areas reveals some unexpected twists in the story. Here are some cases of when aliens can threaten our cultural heritage or being part of it

Effects of polyglecaprone 25, silk and catgut suture materials on oral mucosa wound healing in diabetic rats: An evaluation of nitric oxide dynamics

2009

Guvenc, Tolga/0000-0003-1468-3415; BAS, BURCU/0000-0003-0593-3400 WOS: 000278232100022 PubMed: 20038896 Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of monocryl (Polyglecaprone 25), silk and catgut suture materials on wound healing in diabetic rats and to evaluate NO (nitric oxide) dynamics. Study desing: Fourty-eight male Wistar-Albino rats weighting 220-270 g were used in this study. The rats were categorized into 2 groups, as control group (n=24) and streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic group (n=24). For each group, incision wounds were created on the inner cheeck mucosa of the animals and wounds were closed primarily with three different types of sutures. These m…

Supply chain – marketing integration: How do European SMEs go to China via the New Silk Road

2018

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss China’s New Silk Road initiative as an opportunity for European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to export to Chinese market. It offers research propositions on redefining the business process of European SMEs and Chinese importers in light of the initiative. Design/methodology/approach SMEs’ export barriers, particularly in SCM and marketing, are identified through literature review. Then they are discussed in accordance with the measures that New Silk Road proposed. Findings Logistic infrastructure development under the New Silk Road significantly lowers the supply chain barrier. Marketing remains a challenge for European SMEs to e…

The rapid anastomosis between prevascularized networks on silk fibroin scaffolds generated in vitro with cocultures of human microvascular endothelia…

2010

The survival and functioning of a bone biomaterial upon implantation requires a rapidly forming and stably functioning vascularization that connects the implant to the recipient. We have previously shown that human microcapillary endothelial cells (HDMEC) and primary human osteoblast cells (HOS) in coculture on various 3-D bone biomaterial scaffolds rapidly distribute and self-assemble into a morphological structure resembling bone tissue. Endothelial cells form microcapillary-like structures containing a lumen and these were intertwined between the osteoblast cells and the biomaterial. This tissue-like self-assembly occurred in the absence of exogenously added angiogenic stimuli or artific…

High-yield Production of Amyloid-β Peptide Enabled by a Customized Spider Silk Domain

2020

AbstractDuring storage in the silk gland, the N-terminal domain (NT) of spider silk proteins (spidroins) keeps the aggregation-prone repetitive region in solution at extreme concentrations. We observe that NTs from different spidroins have co-evolved with their respective repeat region, and now use an NT that is distantly related to previously used NTs, for efficient recombinant production of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. A designed variant of NT from Nephila clavipes flagelliform spidroin, which in nature allows production and storage of β-hairpin repeat segments, gives exceptionally high yields of different human Aβ variants as a solubility tag. This tool e…

Antibacterial suture vs silk for the surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. A randomized clinical study.

2015

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological impact of an antibacterial suture (Monocryl® Plus) in the surgical removal of I3M. Material and Methods A “split-mouth”, prospective pilot clinical study was designed involving 20 patients programmed for the surgical removal of I3M. Each side was randomly sutured with Monocryl® Plus or silk suture and removed for microbiological study 72 hours and 7 days after surgery. Presence of SSI, wound bleeding and the degree of discomfort associated with each type of suture material (scored by means of a visual analog scale) were evaluated. The level of contamination of each material was observed under the scanning elec…

Self-healing silk from the sea: role of helical hierarchical structure inPinna nobilisbyssus mechanics

2019

11 pages; International audience; The byssus fibers of Mytilus mussel species have become an important role model in bioinspired materials research due to their impressive properties (e.g. high toughness, self-healing); however, Mytilids represent only a small subset of all byssus-producing bivalves. Recent studies have revealed that byssus from other species possess completely different protein composition and hierarchical structure. In this regard, Pinna nobilis byssus is especially interesting due to its very different morphology, function and its historical use for weaving lightweight golden fabrics, known as sea silk. P. nobilis byssus was recently discovered to be comprised of globula…

The Location of an International Logistics Center in Poland as a Part of the One Belt One Road Initiative

2019

The location of an international logistics center in Poland as a part of The One Belt One Road Initiative

2019

Background: The One Belt One Road initiative opens up many development opportunities for Central and Eastern European countries, some related to the possible construction of a logistics center in this area. For Poland, such an investment would also bring many benefits, not only due to infrastructure development, but also through acceleration of economic growth and job creation. In this context, the crucial issue becomes, what should be the role of an international logistics center and where should it be located. Due to the novelty of the subject, there is a shortcoming of scientific papers related to this issue. The scientific goal of the present paper is to fulfill the gap and to address …

The Painted Silk Panels of Palazzo Barberini at Rome. The Scientific Investigation and Preservation Challenge

2013

Abstract This paper reports the study carried out on the 18th century painted silk panels that cover the walls of the so called Salotto delle sete dipinte in Palazzo Barberini at Rome on the occasion of the conservation work started in 2007. Microscope and spectroscopy investigations were performed in order to study the materials and the realization techniques of the painted silk panels and to evaluate the conservation conditions. Moreover ageing tests were performed in order to evaluate the stability of the consolidant/protective product used for the silk panels.
