Social Animation in Complex Environments

2007

This work presents a market-based social model to produce good quality behavioral animations for groups of intelligent virtual agents. The social model coordinates the activities of groups of virtual characters and also includes social actions in the agent decision-making. We follow the Multi-Agent Resource Allocation approach presented in [2], where agents express their preferences using utility functions. The dynamics of social interactions is inspired by the theory of Piaget [3] over which we have implemented reciprocal task exchanges.

Nota minima sul comodato c.d. ad pompam vel ostentationem

2016

On the basis of the exegesis of certain texts in the Justinian’s Digest, namely 13.6.3.6 (Ulp. 28 ad ed.), 12.1.18.1 (Ulp. 7 disp.), 13.6.4 (Gai. 1 de verb. obl.), 46.3.67 (Marc. 13 dig.), the Author formulates some considerations on the commodatum so-called ad pompam vel ostentationem, pointing out that the applications related to that anomalous commodatum were more complex and not merely confined to the idea of exhibiting id quod usu non consumitur for ‘pomp’, id est (by doing) ‘ostentation’. The basic idea of the Author is that Ulpian has specifically designated two terms, ‘pompa vel ostentatio’, to refer to two different (but not opposing) application spheres, in an attempt to synthesis…

Reconstructing the Phylogeny of the Human Chromosome 4 Synteny using Comparative Karyology and Genomic Data Analysis

2010

Abstract This work focuses on the evolution of the architecture of human chromosome 4 (HSA4) through the analysis of chromosomal regions that have been conserved over time, and the comparison of regions that have been involved in different rearrangements in placental lineages. As with most elements of the human genome, HSA4 is considered to be evolutionarily stable. A more detailed analysis indicates that the syntenic association has been reshuffled by a series of rearrangements, yielding different chromosomes in various taxa. In its ancestral eutherian state, HSA4 has a syntenic association with HSA8p. We investigated the complex origin of this human chromosome using three different approa…

Dynamics of two competing species in the presence of Lévy noise sources

2010

We consider a Lotka-Volterra system of two competing species subject to multiplicative alpha-stable Lévy noise. The interaction parameter between the species is a random process which obeys a stochastic differential equation with a generalized bistable potential in the presence both of a periodic driving term and an additive alpha-stable Lévy noise. We study the species dynamics, which is characterized by two different regimes, exclusion of one species and coexistence of both. We find quasi-periodic oscillations and stochastic resonance phenomenon in the dynamics of the competing species, analysing the role of the Lévy noise sources.

Tournament structure and nations' success in women's professional tennis

2007

The relationship between domestic professional tournament structure in women's tennis and the subsequent professional ranking success of a nation's female players is examined. The 2003 women's professional tennis tournament calendar provided the distribution of events in 33 countries. Criteria used to classify nations' success in women's professional tennis were as follows: number of players with Women's Tennis Association (WTA) points, number of players with Top 200 rankings, and the combined WTA ranking of a nation's Top 5 female players. Pearson product - moment correlations were performed between the number of tournaments and the three criteria. Considerable variation was observed in th…

Digital information receiver based on stochastic resonance

2003

International audience; An electronic receiver based on stochastic resonance is presented to rescue subthreshold modulated digital data. In real experiment, it is shown that a complete data restoration is achieved for both uniform and Gaussian white noise.

Thermal solitons in nanotubes

2022

Starting from a recent proposal of a nonlinear Maxwell-Cattaneo equation for the heat transport with relaxational effects at nanoscale, in a special case of thermal-wave propagation we derive a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the amplitudes of the heatflux perturbation. The complete integrability of the obtained equation is investigated in order to prove the existence of infinite conservation laws, as well as the existence of infinite exact solutions. In this regards, we have considered the simplest nontrivial solutions, namely, the bright and dark (thermal) solitons, which may be interesting for energy transport and for information transmission in phononic circuits. The effect of geometrical parameters on the discharge capacity of meandering compound channels

2008

A number of methods and formulae has been proposed in the literature to estimate the discharge capacity of compound channels. When the main channel has a meandering pattern, a reduction in the conveyance capacity for a given stage is observed, which is due to the energy dissipations caused by the development of strong secondary currents and to the decrease of the main channel bed slope with respect to the valley bed slope. The discharges in meandering compound channels are usually assessed applying, with some adjustments, the same methods used in the straight compound channels. Specifically, the sinuosity of the main channel is frequently introduced to account for its meandering pattern, al…
