Sotilaslentokone sai tulikasteensa ensimmäisessä maailmansodassa. Lentokoneilla taivaalla sotineet miehet nousivat sodan aikana kansan sankareiksi. Tutkin ensimmäisen maailmansodan hävittäjälentäjien sankarimyyttiä Englannissa ja Saksassa sodan aikana ja sen jälkeen. Tutkin aihetta analysoimalla englantilaisen The Manchester Guardian -lehden ja saksalaisen Freiburger Zeitung -lehden kirjoituksia hävittäjälentäjistä. Tutkin lehdistä vuosia 1915–1924. Analysoin lisäksi kuuden kuuluisan hävittäjälentäjän omaelämäkertoja. Numerical methods for a nonlinear impact model: A comparative study with closed-form corrections

A physically based impact model-already known and exploited in the field of sound synthesis-is studied using both analytical tools and numerical simulations. It is shown that the Hamiltonian of a physical system composed of a mass impacting on a wall can be expressed analytically as a function of the mass velocity during contact. Moreover, an efficient and accurate approximation for the mass outbound velocity is presented, which allows to estimate the Hamiltonian at the end of the contact. Analytical results are then compared to numerical simulations obtained by discretizing the system with several numerical methods. Estimating aggregated nutrient fluxes in four Finnish rivers via Gaussian state space models

Reliable estimates of the nutrient fluxes carried by rivers from land-based sources to the sea are needed for efficient abatement of marine eutrophication. Although nutrient concentrations in rivers generally display large temporal variation, sampling and analysis for nutrients, unlike flow measurements, are rarely performed on a daily basis. The infrequent data calls for ways to reliably estimate the nutrient concentrations of the missing days.
