Timbre Similarity: Convergence of Neural, Behavioral, and Computational Approaches

1998

The present study compared the degree of similarity of timbre representations as observed with brain recordings, behavioral studies, and computer simulations. To this end, the electrical brain activity of subjects was recorded while they were repetitively presented with five sounds differing in timbre. Subjects read simultaneously so that their attention was not focused on the sounds. The brain activity was quantified in terms of a change-specific mismatch negativity component. Thereafter, the subjects were asked to judge the similarity of all pairs along a five-step scale. A computer simulation was made by first training a Kohonen self-organizing map with a large set of instrumental sounds…

Using SOM and PCA for analysing and interpreting data from a P-removal SBR

2008

This paper focuses on the application of Kohonen self-organizing maps (SOM) and principal component analysis (PCA) to thoroughly analyse and interpret multidimensional data from a biological process. The process is aimed at enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from wastewater. In this work, SOM and PCA are firstly applied to the data set in order to identify and analyse the relationships among the variables in the process. Afterwards, K-means algorithm is used to find out how the observations can be grouped, on the basis of their similarity, in different classes. Finally, the information obtained using these intelligent tools is used for process interpretation and diagnosis. In the…

Similarity and Consistency in Hotel Online Ratings across Platforms

2019

Online ratings are a major driver of hotel choice. There are many ratings platforms, and the number of evaluations is huge. This article analyzes if hotel ratings vary across platforms, vary over time, and if consistency in ratings can be observed. Longitudinal online ratings taken from 11 platforms over a two-year period were analyzed through Self-Organizing Maps. The findings suggest a similar pattern of online ratings across most of the platforms, except for Yelp and HolidayCheck. In addition, the evaluation patterns are stable over time, and the analyzed attributes do not contribute decisively to explain the overall evaluation of hotels, which implies that tourists use a noncompensator…

Visualization of tonal content with self-organizing maps and self-similarity matrices

2005

This article presents a dynamic model of tonality perception based on a short-term memory model and a self-organizing map (SOM). The model can be used for dynamic visualization of perceived tonal content, making it possible to examine the clarity and locus of tonality at any given point of time. This article also presents a method for the visualization of tonal structure using self-similarity matrices. The methods are applied to compositions of J. S. Bach, S. Barber, and J. Pachelbel. Finally, a real-time application embracing the tonality perception model is presented.

A neural network approach to movement pattern analysis.

2004

Movements are time-dependent processes and so can be modelled by time-series of coordinates: E.g., each articulation has geometric coordinates; the set of the coordinates of the relevant articulations build a high-dimensional configuration. These configurations--or "patterns"--give reason for analysing movements by means of neural networks: The Kohonen Feature Map (KFM) is a special type of neural network, which (after having been coined by training with appropriate pattern samples) is able to recognize single patterns as members of pattern clusters. This way, for example, the particular configurations of a given movement can be identified as belonging to respective configuration clusters, …

Assessing flow resistance law in vegetated channels by dimensional analysis and self-similarity

2019

Abstract In this paper experimental data collected by Kouwen et al., Wilson and Horrit, Raffaelli et al. and Carollo et al., using straight flumes having a bed covered by grass-like vegetation with different stem concentrations, were used to analyze flow resistance for flexible submerged elements. At first, the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity hypothesis was applied to deduce the flow velocity distribution and the resulting theoretical expression of the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor. Then, a relationship between the Γ function of the velocity profile and the biomechanical characteristics of vegetation, the channel slope, the Reynolds number and the flow Froude number…

Closure to “New Theoretical Solution of Stage-Discharge Relationship for Slit Weirs” by Vito Ferro and Ismail Aydin

2018

In this paper, the flow-process of a slit weir was analyzed on the basis of a theorem of dimensional analysis and incomplete self-similarity theory. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula then was calibrated using experimental data obtained for a ratio between the weir and the channel width, ranging from 0.05 to 0.25. The deduced stage-discharge relationship allowed measuring discharge values characterized by errors that, for 98% of the measured values, were less than or equal to +/- 5%. The performance of the proposed theoretical stage-discharge formula also was improved by introducing the Reynolds number (for 98.5% of the measured values the error was less than or equal to +/- …

A generalized stage-discharge relationship for sharp-crested power-law weirs by dimensional analysis and self-similarity

2022

Weirs are characterized by a stage-discharge relationship which mainly depends on the shape and dimensions of the hydraulic structure. A weir with symmetrical power-law sides is a versatile weir that can produce some known weir types (rectangular, triangular, parabolic) as special cases. In this paper, the outflow process of sharp-crested power-law weirs is investigated using the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. A new generalized theoretical stage-discharge relationship is proposed, and its applicability is tested using measurements available in the literature for different weir types.

A new approach for deducing the stage-discharge relationship of a triangular broad-crested device

2022

In this paper, the outflow process of a triangular broad-crested device is examined using the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. A new theoretical stage-discharge relationship is proposed, and its applicability is verified using measurements available in literature. The proposed power equation is characterized by a coefficient depending on device apex angle and a constant value of the exponent.
