Managing electrical energy storage systems and shiftable loads with an innovative approach in energy districts
2014
In this work, a power dispatch problem for a system composed of an aggregate of loads and an electrical energy storage system is considered. The approach to solve the optimal dispatch is innovative and shows good performances in limited calculation times. According to the more recent indications coming from the European distributors, the architecture for energy dispatch at distribution level will be hierarchical. The 'Aggregator' is the interface between groups of loads and the energy distributor and sends the individual consumers the desired load profiles, following which the user may gets a discount on the energy bill. On the other hand, the energy tariff may follow a given daily profile …

In-work benefits for married couples: an ex-ante evaluation of EITC and WTC policies in Italy
2014
This paper investigates labor supply and redistributive effects of in-work benefits for Italian married couples using a tax-benefit microsimulation model and a multi-sectoral discrete choice model of labor supply. We consider two in-work benefit schemes following the key principles of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Working Tax Credit (WTC) existing in the US and the UK, respectively. The standard design of these in-work benefits is however augmented with a new benefit premium for two-earner households in order to overcome the well-known disincentive effects that these welfare instruments may generate on secondary earners. In simulation, the proposed in-work benefits are finance…
Crossing Borders: An Online Interdisciplinary Course in Health Informatics for Students From Two Countries.
2017
A cross-countries and interprofessional novel approach for delivering an international interdisciplinary graduate health informatics course online is presented. Included in this discussion are the challenges, lessons learned, and pedagogical recommendations from the experiences of teaching the course. Four professors from three different fields and from three universities collaborated in offering an international health informatics course for an interdisciplinary group of 18 US and seven Norwegian students. Highly motivated students and professors, an online technology infrastructure that supported asynchronously communication and course delivery, the ability to adapt the curriculum to meet…
A New Approach to Evaluate the Biomechanical Characteristics of Osseointegrated Dental Implants
2019
Tooth loss is a common pathology that affects many people. Dental osseointegrated implants are the ideal solution to restore normal functionality in partially or completely edentulous patients. The not perfect osseointegration and the fixture fracture are the main causes of failure for these kinds of implant. To avoid these drawbacks, several studies have been conducted to analyse the behaviour of dental implants. Aim of this work is to analyse the biomechanical behaviour of three different endosseous dental implants. For this purpose, a new numerical model has been developed to simulate different levels of osseointegration and to evaluate the stress values on the bone at different times. I…
Customised pressure profiles of made-to-measure sports compression garments
2021
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to make made-to-measure compression garments that elicit pressures within and below clinical standards. The study also examined whether pressures and gradients can be replicated within and between participants’ legs, and between separate compression garment conditions. Ten males volunteered to participate. Based on three-dimensional scans of the participants’ lower body, three different made-to-measure garments were manufactured: control, symmetrical and asymmetrical. Garment pressures were assessed from the malleolus to the gluteal fold using a pressure monitoring device. A root mean squared difference analysis was used to calculate the in vivo linear …
A Statistical Model of Spine Shape and Material for Population-Oriented Biomechanical Simulation
2021
In population-oriented ergonomics product design and musculoskeletal kinetics analysis, digital spine models of different shape, pose and material property are in great demand. The purpose of this study was to construct a parameterized finite element spine model with adjustable spine shape and material property. We used statistical shape model approach to learn inter-subject shape variations from 65 CT images of training subjects. Second order polynomial regression was used to model the age-dependent changes in vertebral material property derived from spatially aligned CT images. Finally, a parametric spine generator was developed to create finite element instances of different shapes and m…
Efficient Simulation of Orthogonal Multicarrier Transmission over Multipath Fading Channels
2011
Filterbank orthogonal multicarrier transmission schemes, such as OFDM/OQAM, are currently under intense study for their spectral efficiency and suitability for the physical layer of Cognitive Radio. Nonetheless, the mathematical description of the signal is cumbersome, and closed form expressions for performance figures are not available, so performance analysis on fading channels has to be performed by means of simulations. We propose an algorithm for simulating the received signal over multipath frequency selective fading channels, based on Taylor series expansion of the channel transfer function. The proposed method is compared to the state-of-the-art FFT-based method in terms of computa…
A Wideband One-Ring MIMO Channel Model Under Non-Isotropic Scattering Conditions
2008
In this paper, we present a wideband one-ring multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model for non-isotropic scattering environments. The model is designed in such a way that the delay power spectral density (PSD) of the resulting reference channel model is identical to a given delay PSD. Furthermore, we present an efficient deterministic channel simulation model obtained by using the principle of deterministic channel modeling. The statistical properties of both the reference model and the simulation model are also studied. Analytical expressions will be presented for the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF), the two-dimensional (2D) space cross-correlation function (CCF), and th…
Accelerated Analysis of Low-Level Injection Operation for Transistor-Based Oscillating Amplifiers
2011
The problem of the accelerated analysis of oscillating amplifiers is addressed. To achieve both computational efficiency and adequate accuracy also in case of transmission-type, transistor-based, circuit structures, a novel approach is proposed which makes use of a general reduced-order model of the injected oscillator. A perturbation-refined analysis method is thus applied, which permits to derive the first-order exact set of differential equations that describes the system behavior in the fundamental-frequency complex-envelope domain. As illustrated by the RF Meissner driven oscillator example presented, the devised approach achieves the stated goals, and lends itself as a convenient, des…
