Recent Advances in Static Output-Feedback Controller Design with Applications to Vibration Control of Large Structures
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2014.3.4 Open Access In this paper, we present a novel two-step strategy for static output-feedback controller design. In the first step, an optimal state-feedback controller is obtained by means of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) formulation. In the second step, a transformation of the LMI variables is used to derive a suitable LMI formulation for the static output-feedback controller. This design strategy can be applied to a wide range of practical problems, including vibration control of large structures, control of oshore wind turbine…
Fitting random cash management models to data
2019
Abstract Organizations use cash management models to control balances to both avoid overdrafts and obtain a profit from short-term investments. Most management models are based on control bounds which are derived from the assumption of a particular cash flow probability distribution. In this paper, we relax this strong assumption to fit cash management models to data by means of stochastic and linear programming. We also introduce ensembles of random cash management models which are built by randomly selecting a subsequence of the original cash flow data set. We illustrate our approach by means of a real case study showing that a small random sample of data is enough to fit sufficiently goo…
Morphological characterisation of soil structure in tilled fields: from a diagnosis method to the modelling of structural changes over time
2004
Characterisation of soit structure within the tilled layer of cultivated fields is crucial because the importance of this soil characteristic on the biological, chemical and physical properties of the soil and its repercussions on water cycle, root growth and functioning. We present in this paper a method for field characterisation of soil structure. This method, practised since the 1970s, was designed for field diagnosis of the effects of cropping systems on soil structure. It is based on a stratification of the observation face of a pit dug perpendicular to the direction of tillage and traffic: spatial compartments are distinguished, according to the nature of the mechanical stresses they…
Suitability Of Cellular Network Signaling Data For Origin-Destination Matrix Construction: A Case Study Of Lyon Region (France)
2019
TRB 2019, 98th Annual Meeting Transportation Research Board, Washigton, D.C., ETATS-UNIS, 13-/01/2019 - 17/01/2019; Spatiotemporal data, and more specifically origin-destination matrices, are critical inputs to mobility studies for transportation planning and urban management purposes. In this paper, we propose a methodology to infer origin-destination (O-D) matrices based on passively-collected cellular signaling data of millions of anonymized mobile phone users in the Rhône-Alpes region, France. This dataset, which consists of records time-stamped with users' unique identifier and tower locations, is used to first analyze the cell phone activity degree indicators of each user in orde…
Buildings integrated phase change materials: Modelling and validation of a novel tool for the energy performance analysis
2017
In this paper a novel dynamic energy performance simulation model for the Phase Change Materials (PCM) analysis is presented. The model is implemented in a suitable computer code, written in MatLab and called DETECt, for complete building energy analyses. In the presented model, the “effective specific heat” method is implemented. Here, the specific heat of each PCM layer changes as a function of the system phase and temperature in both melting and freezing processes. A model validation is carried out by comparing numerical results vs. measurements obtained at Solar Laboratory of Concordia University (Montreal, Canada). The simulation model allows exploring the potential of PCMs to increase…
Displacement measurement through DIC and DSPI techniques in cold-expanded holes
2008
In this paper, the displacement field induced by the split-sleeve cold expansion of holes was measured using both digital image correlation (DIC) and digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI) techniques. Thus, the experimental results, which were evaluated on the inlet surface of a 6082-T6 aluminium plate, were compared with those from theoretical prediction. DIC provided accurate measurements up to the elastic-plastic boundary, whereas the DSPI technique highlighted the changes of displacement in the elastic domain. Prediction of the displacement based on the existing analytical model agreed with the experimental results achieved with both techniques. Possible explanations for the diff…
Search for High-energy Neutrinos from Gravitational Wave Event GW151226 and Candidate LVT151012 with ANTARES and IceCube
2017
[EN] The Advanced LIGO observatories detected gravitational waves from two binary black hole mergers during their first observation run (O1). We present a high-energy neutrino follow-up search for the second gravitational wave event, GW151226, as well as for gravitational wave candidate LVT151012. We find two and four neutrino candidates detected by IceCube, and one and zero detected by ANTARES, within +/- 500 s around the respective gravitational wave signals, consistent with the expected background rate. None of these neutrino candidates are found to be directionally coincident with GW151226 or LVT151012. We use nondetection to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission …
UWSim-NET: An Open-Source Framework for Experimentation in Communications for Underwater Robotics
2019
The communication with the remotely operated vehicles (ROV) in underwater applications are usually based on umbilical cables. The increase in the number of ROVs in cooperative interventions motivates the interest in underwater wireless communications. They have a high impact in robotic applications because of their limited performance in underwater scenarios. In this work we present UWSim-NET, an extension of the simulator for underwater robotics UWSim, which is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS). UWSim-NET integrates a communications module based on Network Simulator 3 (NS3) that allows to model the physical and data link layers. Experiments demonstrating the capabilities of UWSim-N…
Wikipedia network analysis of cancer interactions and world influence
2019
AbstractWe apply the Google matrix algorithms for analysis of interactions and influence of 37 cancer types, 203 cancer drugs and 195 world countries using the network of 5 416 537 English Wikipedia articles with all their directed hyperlinks. The PageRank algorithm provides the importance order of cancers which has 60% and 70% overlaps with the top 10 cancers extracted from World Health Organization GLOBOCAN 2018 and Global Burden of Diseases Study 2017, respectively. The recently developed reduced Google matrix algorithm gives networks of interactions between cancers, drugs and countries taking into account all direct and indirect links between these selected 435 entities. These reduced n…
