Radiation dose distribution around a mobile linear accelerator Mobetron using Monte Carlo simulation

2016

The aim of this work is to analyze the scattered radiation produced by the mobile accelerator Mobetron. To do so detailed Monte Carlo simulation using two different codes, Penelope2011 and Geant4, were performed. Experimental measurements were also done to validate them. To quantify the attenuation of the internal structures present in the accelerator head on the scattered radiation produced, some of the main structural shielding in the Mobetron has been incorporated into the simulation. Results are compared with experimental measurements. Some discrepancies between the calculated and measured dose values were found. These differences can be traced back to the importance of the radiation co…

Elucidating the electron transport in semiconductors via Monte Carlo simulations: An inquiry-driven learning path for engineering undergraduates

2015

Within the context of higher education for science or engineering undergraduates, we present an inquiry-driven learning path aimed at developing a more meaningful conceptual understanding of the electron dynamics in semiconductors in the presence of applied electric fields. The electron transport in a nondegenerate n-type indium phosphide bulk semiconductor is modelled using a multivalley Monte Carlo approach. The main characteristics of the electron dynamics are explored under different values of the driving electric field, lattice temperature and impurity density. Simulation results are presented by following a question-driven path of exploration, starting from the validation of the model…

LES of the flow around two cylinders in tandem

2008

The flow around an arrangement of two-in-tandem cylinders exhibits a remarkably\ud complex behaviour that is of interest for many engineering problems, such as environmental\ud flows or structural design. In the present paper, a Large Eddy Simulation using a staggered\ud Cartesian grid has been performed for the flow around two-in-tandem cylinders of diameter\ud D=20mm and height H=50mm submerged in an open channel with height h=60 mm. The two\ud axes have a streamwise spacing of 2D. The Reynolds number is 1500, based on the cylinder\ud diameter and the free-stream velocity u. The results obtained show that no vortex shedding\ud occurs in the gap between the two cylinders where the separat…

Modulation instability scenario in negative index materials

2010

We present an investigation of the critical frequency windows permitting modulation instability in negative index materials. The principal motivation for our analysis stems from the impact of the inevitable presence of the effective dispersive magnetic permeability in addition to the effective dielectric permittivity determining the propagation model for ultrashort pulses in negative index materials. We emphasize the influence of nonlinear dispersion terms, arising out of the combinatorial effect of the dispersive permeability with the nonlinear polarization, over the MI phenomena, the outcome of its development achieved by using linear stability analysis. Gain spectrum investigation has be…

CNN-based People Detection in Voxel Space using Intensity Measurements and Point Cluster Flattening

2021

In this paper real-time people detection is demonstrated in a relatively large indoor industrial robot cell as well as in an outdoor environment. Six depth sensors mounted at the ceiling are used to generate a merged point cloud of the cell. The merged point cloud is segmented into clusters and flattened into gray-scale 2D images in the xy and xz planes. These images are then used as input to a classifier based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The final output is the 3D position (x,y,z) and bounding box representing the human. The system is able to detect and track multiple humans in real-time, both indoors and outdoors. The positional accuracy of the proposed method has been verifi…

The effect of the slope of irregularly distributed roughness elements on turbulent wall-bounded flows

2008

Wall roughness produces a downward shift of the mean streamwise velocity profile in the log region, known as the roughness function. The dependence of the roughness function on the height and arrangement of roughness elements has been confirmed in several studies where regular rough walls were analysed; less attention has been paid to non-regular rough walls. Here, a numerical analysis of turbulent flows over irregularly shaped rough walls is performed, clearly identifying the importance of a parameter, called the effective slope (ES) of the wall corrugations, in characterizing the geometry of non-smooth irregular walls. The effective slope proves to be one of the fundamental geometric para…

NOISE EFFECTS IN POLYMER DYNAMICS

2008

The study of the noise induced effects on the dynamics of a chain molecule crossing a potential barrier, in the presence of a metastable state, is presented. A two-dimensional stochastic version of the Rouse model for a flexible polymer has been adopted to mimic the molecular dynamics and to take into account the interactions between adjacent monomers. We obtain a nonmonotonic behavior of the mean first passage time and its standard deviation, of the polymer centre of inertia, with the noise intensity. These findings reveal a noise induced effect on the mean crossing time. The role of the polymer length is also investigated.

Bridging the Gap Between Atomistic and Coarse-Grained Models of Polymers: Status and Perspectives

2000

Recent developments that increase the time and distance scales accessible in the simulations of specific polymers are reviewed. Several different techniques are similar in that they replace a model expressed in fully atomistic detail with a coarse-grained model of the same polymer, atomistic → coarse-grained (and beyond!), thereby increasing the time and distance scales accessible within the expenditure of reasonable computational resources. The bridge represented by the right-pointing arrow can be constructed via different procedures, which are reviewed here. The review also considers the status of methods which reverse this arrow, atomistic ← coarse-grained. This “reverse-mapping” recover…
