Abstract This paper focuses on the dissipative similarity of step-pool units at rill, flume and stream scale. This investigation is carried out using recent advances in open channel flow resistance, applications of close-range photogrammetry to rill erosion, available published data on step-pool features in flumes and streams and a new dataset of measurements in fixed bed step-pool rills. Is there any scaling in the cluster distribution?

We apply fractal analysis methods to investigate the scaling properties in the Abell and ACO catalogs of rich galaxy clusters. We also discuss different technical aspects of the method when applied to data sets with small number of points as the cluster catalogs. Results are compared with simulations based on the Zel'dovich approximation. We limit our analysis to scales less than 100 $\hm$. The cluster distribution show a scale invariant multifractal behavior in a limited scale range. For the Abell catalog this range is 15--60$\hm$, while for the ACO sample it extends to smaller scales. An infrared thermographic experimental set-up has been proposed and evaluated towards the capability to measure thermoelastic-effect-induced temperature changes. A standard infrared thermocamera with a nominal noise-equivalent temperature difference (NETD) resolution of 0.12 K has been employed to measure the temperature from unidirectional glass-reinforced plastic tensile coupons under cyclic sinusoidal loads. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of various sodium silicate melts, (Na2O)x(SiO2) with x=2, 3, 20, are presented. In these systems, the mobility of sodium ions is much higher, often by orders of magnitude, than that of the silicon and oxygen atoms forming a tetrahedral network structure. We show that the high mobility of sodium is intimately related to the chemical ordering in sodium silicates. A network of percolating sodium-rich channels is formed in the static structure that serve as diffusion channels for the sodium ions. The apparent losses due to metering errors: a proactive approach to predict losses and schedule maintenance

The effects of water meter age and private tanks on the apparent losses due to metering errors were evaluated by experimental and theoretical analyses. A monitoring campaign on a small district metered area (DMA) was carried out to determine the causes of apparent losses and implement a numerical model. Metering errors are affected by the flow rate passing through the meter, which is dependent on the network pressure and water level of the private tank. A node model that reproduces the effect of private tanks was coupled with EPANET and was applied to the DMA.
