The sense of a patient: An ethnographic multi-site field study exploring the influence of manikins on nursing students' learning
2022
The purpose of this ethnographic study was to gain insight into the influence of full-body human-like manikins on nursing students’ learning. The research question that guided the study was: How do the presence and use of human-like manikins influence nursing students’ learning? Data were collected during 15 educational sessions, using different manikins for various activities. Applying cultural-historical activity theory, this study explored the use of manikins as a mediated activity. The study’s main result was the interplay of five categories. In the first category, manikin as an object, manikins were used to teach and learn technical skills. In the second category, manikin as a subject,…
Molecular Selectivity of CH 4 –C 2 H 6 Mixed Hydrates: A GCMC Study
2021
International audience; In this paper, we report the first grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation study aiming at characterizing the competitive trapping of CH4 and C2H6 molecules into clathrate hydrates under temperature conditions typical of those encountered at the surface of Titan. Various compositions of the fluid in contact with the clathrate phase have been considered in the simulations, including pure methane, pure ethane, and mixed fluids made of various methane/ethane ratios. The trapping isotherms obtained from the simulations clearly show that ethane molecules can be enclathrated at lower pressures than methane molecules. In addition, they provide evidence that the methane molec…
Meaningful learning in business through serious games
2017
Purpose: The requirements of a business executive include the talent and creativity to solve problems and adapt to continuous changes presented by the economic and social environment. However, the university does not often prepare students in these skills. Businesses simulations are didactic tools in which participants assume a role and make decisions which affect the results of the company. This paper aims to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of business simulations in university teaching. Design/methodology: We have implemented business simulations in a course in the College of Economics at the University of Valencia, during the 2015-2016 academic year. Questionnaires were u…
Design and Validation of a FPGA-Based HIL Simulator for Minimum Losses Control of a PMSM
2021
This work examines the FPGA programmable logic platforms applied to minimum losses control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), which represents a flexible solution for the implementation of an advanced digital control algorithm, given their intrinsic parallel structure and the capability to be directly reprogrammable in the field. In particular, design and validation of a FPGA-based Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulator is proposed, by investigating about data format, quantization and discretization effects and other issues arising during the experimental validation of a controller prototype, in order to reduce the embedded software development cycle and test control systems. The…
A PV plant simulator for testing MPPT techniques
2013
This paper introduces a versatile and reliable photovoltaic systems simulator. It includes the main components of a photovoltaic plant: a PV string and a PWM controlled boost chooper. The key feature of this simulator is the ability to consider different and non-uniform irradiation and temperature conditions (partial shading and partial heating of the strings). All the different I-V and P-V or P-I characteristics can then be determined in such non-uniform irradiation and temperature conditions, with the aim to try different MPPT algorithms. The simulator also allows to verify an enhanced version of the Incremental Conductance algorithm (IncCond) where, in order to reach the real absolute ma…
Thermodynamics and Structure of Plate-Like Particle Dispersions
2012
A considerable amount of mineral particles are found to have a plate-like shape. The work in this thesis concerns theoretical investigations, using a Monte Carlo method, of the properties of such particles in aqueous solutions. The objectives were first to create a model that could capture the essential physics of clay suspensions and also to understand the role of thermodynamics in certain chemical processes. For all investigations, the results are related to experimental studies. The acid-base behavior of clays have been studied, using the primitive model, and an excellent agreement between simulated and experimental results was found. The formation of gel phases as a function of the char…
Numerical Simulations of a Flux Rope Ejection
2015
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the most violent phenomena observed on the Sun. One of the most successful models to explain CMEs is the flux rope ejection model, where a magnetic flux rope is expelled from the solar corona after a long phase along which the flux rope stays in equilibrium while magnetic energy is being accumulated. However, still many questions are outstanding on the detailed mechanism of the ejection and observations continuously provide new data to interpret and put in the context. Currently, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) are providing new insights into the early phase of CME evo…
The Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector for ATHENA: the progress towards the final pixel design
2014
“The Hot and Energetic Universe” is the scientific theme approved by the ESA SPC for a Large mission to be flown in the next ESA slot (2028th) timeframe. ATHENA is a space mission proposal tailored on this scientific theme. It will be the first X-ray mission able to perform the so-called “Integral field spectroscopy”, by coupling a high-resolution spectrometer, the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), to a high performance optics so providing detailed images of its field of view (5’ in diameter) with an angular resolution of 5” and fine energy-spectra (2.5eV@E<7keV). The X-IFU is a kilo-pixel array based on TES (Transition Edge Sensor) microcalorimeters providing high resolution spectroscopy …
