The site of fertilisation determines dorsoventral polarity but not chirality in the zebra mussel embryo

1998

The dorsoventral polarity of unequally cleaving spiralian embryos becomes established at an early stage. The factors determining the position of the dorsoventral axis are still unknown. We present data showing that the sperm entry point (SEP) in both normal development and under experimental conditions determines the position of the first cleavage furrow in Dreissena embryos. The position of the spindles at second cleavage is directed by the site of fertilisation also, and the large, dorsal D quadrant of the 4-cell stage always forms opposite the SEP. The spiral chirality at third cleavage seems to be independent of both the fertilisation point and the arrangement of the quadrants. Dextral …

Left ventricular hypertrophy and geometry in hypertensive patients with chronic kidney disease.

2009

To evaluate the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2-5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function. All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1 CKD, dialysis treatment, or with cardiovascular diseases were excluded.LVH was observed in 47.1% of patients with CKD and in 31.14% of essential hypertensive patients (P0.0001). We found increasingly higher left ventricular diameters, thicknesses, and mass from stage 2 to 5 CKD. Distribution of concentric and eccentric LVH was not different between the two groups. H…

EFFETTI DELL'ALLENAMENTO ALLE ATTIVITÀ SPORTIVE SULLA MASSA VENTRICOLARE SINISTRA

2009

Middle Triassic carbonate platforms in eastern Iberia: Evolution of their fauna and palaeogeographic significance in the western Tethys

2015

Abstract This article reports the first integrated study of the Middle Triassic of Iberia, based on the stratigraphy, sedimentology, and fossil fauna of Muschelkalk facies of the Iberian Ranges and the Catalan Coastal Ranges in Spain. On the basis of this study, new palaeogeographic reconstructions of the westernmost Tethys are proposed, and the evolution of the different palaeogeographic domains of Iberia (e.g., Iberian, Mediterranean, and Levantine–Balearic) are described. In these domains, Muschelkalk facies record the development of wide carbonate platforms that were the consequence of the first two broad marine transgressions of the Mesozoic in Iberia, respectively, late Pelsonian–earl…

Comment on "Displacement along the Karakoram fault, NW Himalaya, estimated from LA-ICP-MS U Pb dating of offset geologic markers" published by Shifen…

2013

International audience; Field evidence for syn-deformation migmatization and crystallization along the Karakorum fault contradicts the study of Wang et al. (2012). The ages of such magmatic rocks provide minimum ages for the onset of deformation at similar to 23 Ma in North Ayilari and similar to 19 Ma in Tangtse. The onset of deformation at 12 Ma in the Ayilari range inferred by Wang et al. (2012) from a muscovite Ar/Ar age is a cooling age, thus only a minimum age. The similar to 60 Ma granodiorite bodies, the ophiolitic rocks and the south Kailash thrust that are correlated across the fault to provide a 52 +/- 2 km finite offset do not define reliable piercing points. Such observations a…

Early oysters and their supposed Permian ancestors

2005

The origin of oysters is a much debated palaeontological issue. Recent morphological studies indicate that oysters are characterized by a particular ribbing pattern, the so-called antimarginal ribs which are characterized by a proper morphogenetic pattern. Therefore antimarginal ribs can be used as a diagnostic character in phylogeny. The earliest recognized bivalve displaying diagnostic features of oysters (sinistral attachment to the substrate, typical hinge and ligament structure, and antimarginal ribs) is Ostracites cristadifformis Schlotheim, 1820 first appearing in the Anisian of Europe. This common species was later attributed to Enantiostreon and is here transferred to Umbrostrea. S…

Orbital variations in planktonic foraminifera assemblages from the Ionian Sea during the Middle Pleistocene Transition

2013

Abstract The Middle Pleistocene Transition (1.2–0.7 Ma) is the most recent re-organization of the global climate system which includes variations in the frequency and amplitude of glacial/interglacial cycles, increased ice sheet volume, sea surface temperature cooling and a significant drop in the CO 2 atmospheric levels. Here we present high-resolution planktonic foraminifera data (mean sampling resolution of about 780 years) from core LC10 recovered in the Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean), between 1.2 and 0.9 Ma. Selected taxa, among them G. ruber , T. quinqueloba and G. bulloides , show significant periodicities that can be associated to orbital cycles, mainly precession and obliquity.…
