Toward resourcefulness: pathways for community positive health.
2021
Communities are powerful and necessary agents for defining and pursuing their health, but outside organizations often adopt community health promotion approaches that are patronizing and top-down. Conversely, bottom-up approaches that build on and mobilize community health assets are often critiqued for tasking the most vulnerable and marginalized communities to use their own limited resources without real opportunities for change. Taking into consideration these community health promotion shortcomings, this article asks how communities may be most effectively and appropriately supported in pursuing their health. This article reviews how community health is understood, moving from negative…
Associations between changes in physical fitness and psychological difficulties status among Norwegian adolescents
2021
Abstract Objectives To investigate the associations for one-year changes in cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and body mass index, with psychological difficulties status in adolescents. Methods Norwegian 14-15-year-olds (n = 925) participated in data collection at two time points separated by one year. Psychological difficulties were assessed via the Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire and data from follow-up serve as the dependent variable. Cardiorespiratory fitness (the Andersen-test), muscular strength (Eurofit) and body mass index were measured. Change scores were calculated from the physical fitness variables and serve as independent variables in linear mixed effects mo…
Middle Miocene–Early Pliocene wedge-top basins of NW Sicily (Italy): constraints for the tectonic evolution of a ‘non-conventional’ thrust belt, affe…
2014
The study of geological evolution of a multiphase orogenic belt is complex, expecially when the tectonic events are superimposed in a coaxial fashion. The Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt represents an interest- ing case study, as a non-coaxial superimposition of structures is recognizable, owing to large synkinematic clockwise rotations during each of two subsequent compressional events. These rotations involved also the syntectonic basins that developed in the wedge-top depozone. This study aims to constrain the tectono-depo- sitional evolution of the NW Sicily fold-and-thrust belt and the associated wedge-top depozone between the middle Miocene and the early Pliocene. Integrated analyses of…

Hydrophobic and cation exchange mechanisms in the retention of basic compounds in a polymeric column.
2004
A cation exchange retention mechanism concomitant with the well-known hydrophobic partition mechanism in a polymeric column has been observed and investigated. This exchange process is attributed to ionization of some acidic sites present in the polymer column at basic mobile phase pH values. Several drugs of different basicity have been chromatographed on a polymeric PLRP-S column with methanol-water and acetonitrile-water mobile phases. The cation exchange between the protonated basic drug and the buffer cations (Na+, K+ and BuNH4+) is observed at the pH range where the protonated drug and the ionized sites of the column coexist. This process produces a shift of the retention versus pH pl…
Characterization of commercial synthetic resins by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: application to modern art and conservation.
2009
To characterize a set of synthetic resins, a methodology by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) has been developed. The studied reference materials were commercial versions of a wide range of synthetic resins. For each polymer, the pyrolytic and chromatographic conditions were optimized to adequately resolve the fragment mixture in a short time. The proposed analytical method does not require previous treatment of the sample, and due to its high sensitivity, only a small sample quantity in the microgram range can be used. The pyrolysis temperature was found to have little effect on the obtained pyrograms. The summarized data set for the individual polymer materials, es…
Novel acrylamido monomers with higher hydrophilicity and improved hydrolytic stability: II. Properties of N-acryloylaminopropanol
1996
The physico-chemical properties and the electrophoretic behavior of the novel set of monomers reported by (Simo-Alfonso et al., Electrophoresis 1996, 17, 723-731) have been evaluated. Of utmost importance was the combination of high hydrophilicity and extreme hydrolytic stability, most desired properties for, any electrophoretic matrix, especially for protein fractionation. One of these monomers (N-acryloylaminopropanol, AAP) was found indeed to be extremely hydrophilic (with a partition coefficient P of only 0.10, vs. P = 0.13 for N-acryloylaminoethoxyethanol and P = 0.20 for acrylamide) and to possess excellent stability to alkaline hydrolysis. Its hydrolysis constant (0.008 L mol-1 min-1…
Epoxy resins as a matrix material in advanced fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites
2013
Abstract: This chapter discusses the epoxy resins which, thanks to their good and versatile properties, can be considered nowadays the most important class of thermosetting polymers. In particular the chapter first reviews both the epoxy resins commonly available on the market, including a new class of bio-derived epoxy resins, and the most-used curing agents. it then describes the principal characteristics of the epoxy resins and how it is possible to enhance them by adding several fillers to the epoxy system. Finally, the chapter analyzes the main engineering fields in which epoxy resins find application today and their possible future utilization.
Carbon fibre composite materials produced by gamma radiation induced curing of epoxy resins
2008
It is well known that ionizing radiation can initiate polymerization of suitable monomers for many applications. In this work an epoxy dlfunctional monomer has been used as matrix of a carbon fibre composite in order to produce materials through gamma radiation, for aerospace and advanced automotive applications. Radiation curing has been performed at different absorbed doses and, as comparison, also thermal curing of the same monomer formulations has been done. Furthermore some Irradiated samples have been also subjected to a post Irradiation thermal curing in order to complete the polymerization reactions. The properties of the cured materials have been studied by moisture absorption isot…
Novel acrylamido monomers with higher hydrophilicity and improved hydrolytic stability: III. DNA separations by capillary electrophoresis in poly(N-a…
1996
Separation of DNA fragments in a novel polymer network, consisting of N-acryloylaminopropanol (AAP) is reported. The performance of this novel monomer, as a sieving liquid polymer in capillary zone electrophoresis, was evaluated. In 50 microns ID capillaries, an 8% solution of poly (AAP) can afford apex-resolution of the 123/124 bp adjacent pair of DNA fragments in marker V, typically unresolved in any poly (acrylamide) formulation. It is proposed that the distal-OH group in the AAP molecule can form transient H-bonds with the DNA double helix. Molecular modeling shows a meandering structure for poly (AAP), lacing the walls of half a cylinder, with kinks protruding at regular intervals, pot…
