The present paper presents the results of experimental analyses carried out to study the behaviour of slotted bolted connections (SBC) as friction steel dampers. The devices consist of bolted joints with slotted holes, which can be used in both steel and RC framed structures or, alternatively, into beam-column and column-foundation joints. The most suitable configurations to increase friction are investigated utilizing steel S355J0 plates and class 10.9HV high-strength bolts, under controlled pre-load and considering different types of surface treatment. It has stimulated innovative laser cavity designs in the past few years. Electric Field Control of Spin-Dependent Dissipative Electron Transfer Dynamics in Mixed-Valence Molecules

We demonstrate that the borderline class II/III magnetic MV dimers, which can be referred to as single molecule multiferroics, provide a unique possibility to achieve electric field control of the electron transfer (ET) dynamics. As an example, we consider a MV dimer d2-d1 in which an extra electron is delocalized over two spin-cores (s0 = 1/2), and the ET is spin-dependent due to the double exchange mechanism. It is assumed that the “extra” electron is coupled to the only intramolecular vibration, and a weak coupling to the dissipative subsystem (thermal bath) is taken into account. Dissensus is a modeling framework for networks of dynamic agents in competition for scarce resources. Originally inspired by biological cells behaviors, it fits also marketing, finance and many other application areas. Competition is often unstable in the sense that strong agents, those having access to large resources, gain more and more resources at the expense of weak agents. Thus, strong agents duplicate when reaching a critical amount of resources, whereas weak agents die when loosing all their resources. South Pole glacial climate reconstruction from multi-borehole laser particulate stratigraphy

AbstractThe IceCube Neutrino Observatory and its prototype, AMANDA, were built in South Pole ice, using powerful hot-water drills to cleanly bore>100 holes to depths up to 2500 m. The construction of these particle physics detectors provided a unique opportunity to examine the deep ice sheet using a variety of novel techniques. We made high-resolution particulate profiles with a laser dust logger in eight of the boreholes during detector commissioning between 2004 and 2010. The South Pole laser logs are among the most clearly resolved measurements of Antarctic dust strata during the last glacial period and can be used to reconstruct paleoclimate records in exceptional detail. Small-amplitude collective modes of a finite-size unitary Fermi gas in deformed traps

We have investigated collective breathing modes of a unitary Fermi gas in deformed harmonic traps. The ground state is studied by the Superfluid Local Density Approximation (SLDA) and small-amplitude collective modes are studied by the iterative Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA). The results illustrate the evolutions of collective modes of a small system in traps from spherical to elongated or pancake deformations. For small spherical systems, the influences of different SLDA parameters are significant, and, in particular, a large pairing strength can shift up the oscillation frequency of collective mode. Pseudomonas corrugata and P. mediterranea are soil inhabitant bacteria, generally living as endophytes on symptomless plants and bare soil, but also capable of causing plant diseases. They share a similar genome size and a high proteome similarity. P. corrugata produces many biomolecules which play an important role in bacterial cell survival and fitness. An Ecology and Economy Coupling Model. A global stationary state model for a sustainable economy in the Hamiltonian formalism

Abstract The severity of the two deeply correlated crises, the environmental and the economic ones, needs to be faced also in theoretical terms; thus, the authors propose a model yielding a global “stationary state”, following the idea of a “steady-state economics” by Georgescu-Rogen and Herman Daly, by constructing only one dynamical system of ecological and economic coupled variables. Subsidizing private childcare in a universal regime

AbstractAll families in Finland have the freedom to choose between subsidized home care, universal public childcare, and private childcare. We study the impact of the introduction of private childcare subsidies in Finland. Private childcare subsidies have causal effects on take-up but no impact on home care or employment among women with small children. Instead, private services seem to crowd out public childcare. Private services have a socioeconomic gradient by mother’s education that steepens when the subsidy increases. Families’ preferences between home care, public childcare, and private childcare do not explain the result.
