Flux-flow instability and heating effects in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and YBa2Cu3O7 thin films

Abstract We investigated current–voltage curves of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 and YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 thin films. Voltage jumps due to flux-flow instabilities at high vortex-velocities were found and interpreted in the framework of the theory of Larkin and Ovchinnikov. The extensions introduced by Bezuglyj et al. account for quasiparticle heating during the measurement. While in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 the instability is found in the vortex-liquid phase, in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 we observed it in the vortex-glass phase. Moreover, we studied the temporal behavior of the instability in current–voltage curves with a time resolution in the microsecond range.

AbstractThis study examines the spatial and seasonal patterning of mitochondrial DNA diversity in French populations of the bird cherry-oat aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi(Linnaeus), on both its primary and secondary hosts. Our results confirm the presence of two major mitochondrial lineages that are generally associated with the breeding system variation (cyclic and obligate parthenogenesis) shown by this species. The strength of this relationship varies regionally, being most evident in the south and west. Cyclically parthenogenetic populations show no significant regional or seasonal genetic divergence reflecting high levels of gene flow, possibly promoted by their obligate host-alternation. Ho…

Mitochondrial genome sequence and gene order of Sipunculus nudus give additional support for an inclusion of Sipuncula into Annelida.

Abstract Background Mitochondrial genomes are a valuable source of data for analysing phylogenetic relationships. Besides sequence information, mitochondrial gene order may add phylogenetically useful information, too. Sipuncula are unsegmented marine worms, traditionally placed in their own phylum. Recent molecular and morphological findings suggest a close affinity to the segmented Annelida. Results The first complete mitochondrial genome of a member of Sipuncula, Sipunculus nudus, is presented. An efficient dissipative particle dynamics-based algorithm for simulating electrolyte solutions

We propose an efficient simulation algorithm based on the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method for studying electrohydrodynamic phenomena in electrolyte fluids. The fluid flow is mimicked with DPD particles while the evolution of the concentration of the ionic species is described using Brownian pseudo particles. The method is designed especially for systems with high salt concentrations, as explicit treatment of the salt ions becomes computationally expensive. For illustration, we apply the method to electro-osmotic flow over patterned, superhydrophobic surfaces. The results are in good agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

Motion, relaxation dynamics, and diffusion processes in two-dimensional colloidal crystals confined between walls

The dynamical behavior of single-component two-dimensional colloidal crystals confined in a slit geometry is studied by Langevin dynamics simulation of a simple model. The colloids are modeled as pointlike particles, interacting with the repulsive part of the Lennard-Jones potential, and the fluid molecules in the colloidal suspension are not explicitly considered. Considering a crystalline strip of triangular lattice structure with n=30 rows, the (one-dimensional) walls confining the strip are chosen as two rigidly fixed crystalline rows at each side, commensurate with the lattice structure and, thus, stabilizing long-range order. Measurement of branching fractions and charge asymmetries for exclusive B decays to charmonium

We report measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries of exclusive decays of neutral and charged B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium state and a light strange meson. The charmonium mesons considered are J/Psi, Psi(2S) and Chi_c1, and the light meson is either K or K*. We use a sample of about 124 million BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

Energy-Stable Numerical Schemes for Multiscale Simulations of Polymer–Solvent Mixtures

We present a new second-order energy dissipative numerical scheme to treat macroscopic equations aiming at the modeling of the dynamics of complex polymer–solvent mixtures. These partial differential equations are the Cahn-Hilliard equation for diffuse interface phase fields and the Oldroyd-B equations for the hydrodynamics of the polymeric mixture. A second-order combined finite volume/finite difference method is applied for the spatial discretization. A complementary approach to study the same physical system is realized by simulations of a microscopic model based on a hybrid Lattice Boltzmann/Molecular Dynamics scheme. (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Macrosiphini) are described from apterous and alate viviparous females collected on species of genera Bidens, Schkuhria, Senecio and Stevia (Asteraceae: Asteroideae) in Costa Rica and Mexico. Principal components analysis (PCA) was done to verify that the studied aphids belong to a single species regardless of their geographical origin or host plant.
