Localized surface plasmons on a torus in the nonretarded approximation

2005

International audience; The dispersion relations and field patterns of the localized surface plasmons of a torus are derived analytically in toroidal coordinates in the nonretarded approximation. Numerical calculations are provided in order to identify the conditions under which a toroidal nanostructure supports a significant magnetic dipole moment at optical frequencies.

Optical absorption of torus-shaped metal nanoparticles in the visible range

2007

Received 22 November 2007; published 19 December 2007We theoretically and experimentally investigated the optical response of a thin metal nanotorus in the visiblerange. The close formulas describing the extinction cross sections of a torus are obtained in the nonretardedapproximation. We demonstrate a good agreement between numerical simulations and experimental data. Ourfindings show that the main resonance is highly sensitive to the external medium and the geometrical param-eters of the particle.DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.76.245422 PACS number s : 78.67.Bf, 73.20.Mf, 78.20.Ci

Antibacterial effects of enniatins J1 and J3 on pathogenic and lactic acid bacteria

2011

Abstract Enniatins (ENs) are N -methylated cyclohexadepsipeptides, secondary metabolites produced by various species of the genus Fusarium . They are known to act as antifungal, antiyeast and antibacterial and to possess antiinsecticidal and phytotoxic properties. In this study we evaluated for the first time the antibiotic effect of pure fractions of EN J 1 and J 3 on several pathogenic strains and lactic acid bacteria. The ENs J 1 and J 3 were purified from the fermentation extract of Fusarium solani growth on solid medium of wheat kamut, using the technique of the low pressure liquid chromatography (LPLC) followed by a semipreparative liquid chromatography (LC). The purity and the struct…

Dissipative scaling of step-pool features

2021

Abstract This paper focuses on the dissipative similarity of step-pool units at rill, flume and stream scale. This investigation is carried out using recent advances in open channel flow resistance, applications of close-range photogrammetry to rill erosion, available published data on step-pool features in flumes and streams and a new dataset of measurements in fixed bed step-pool rills. A theoretically-based equation for calculating the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor obtained by integration of a power velocity profile is presented. The scale factor Γ of this power velocity profile, which is included in the flow resistance equation, was previously calibrated (Eq. 10) for mobile bed rills w…

Double beta decays of 124Xe investigated in the QRPA framework

2013

The two-neutrino (2ν2β) and neutrinoless (0ν2β) double beta decays of 124Xe are investigated. Decays to the ground state, , and various 0+ and 2+ excited states in 124Te are considered. The corresponding nuclear matrix elements have been calculated by using the quasiparticle random-phase approximation combined with the multiple-commutator model. G-matrix-based effective nuclear interactions have been used in realistic single-particle model spaces. All possible channels, β+β+, β+EC, and ECEC, are discussed for both the 2ν2β and 0ν2β decays. The associated half-lives are computed, in particular the one corresponding to the resonant neutrinoless double electron capture transition to the 2790.4…

Teatral'nost' v tvorčestve O. I. Senkovskogo

2001

The present study is dedicated to O. I. Senkovsky, (1800-1858) who was a professor of St. Petersburg University, an outstanding scientist, editor-in-chief of a popular magazine “Reading Library”, an influential literary critic, and a writer. This study provides a novel perspective on Senkovsky’s legacy, an attempt to comprehend his works through theatrical methods.Senkovsky’s literary masks express theatricality in his works. The name of his most famous pseudonym Baron Brambeus borrows deliberately from the Russian “lubok” literature in order to attract the attention of a general reader. It is Senkovsky’s bent for exotics, parody and paradox as the methods for his work that has defined the …

Differential Effects of Fluvoxamine and Other Antidepressants on the Biotransformation of Melatonin

2001

Melatonin, the predominant product of the pineal gland, is involved in the maintenance of diurnal rhythms. Nocturnal blood concentrations of melatonin have been shown to be enhanced by fluvoxamine, but not by other serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Because fluvoxamine is an inhibitor of several cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, the authors studied the biotransformation of melatonin and the effects of fluvoxamine on the metabolism of melatonin in vitro using human liver microsomes and recombinant human CYP isoenzymes. Melatonin was found to be almost exclusively metabolized by CYP1A2 to 6-hydroxymelatonin and N-acetylserotonin with a minimal contribution of CYP2C19. Both reactions were potently in…

Antidepressants are functional antagonists at the serotonin type 3 (5-HT3) receptor

2003

Antidepressants are commonly supposed to enhance serotonergic and/or noradrenergic neurotransmission by inhibition of neurotransmitter reuptake through binding to the respective neurotransmitter transporters or through inhibition of the monoamine oxidase. Using the concentration-clamp technique and measurements of intracellular Ca2+, we demonstrate that different classes of antidepressants act as functional antagonists at the human 5-HT3A receptor stably expressed in HEK 293 cells and at endogenous 5-HT3 receptors of rat hippocampal neurons and N1E-115 neuroblastoma cells. The tricyclic antidepressants desipramine, imipramine, and trimipramine, the serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine, t…

Settling Down: The Genome of Serratia symbiotica from the Aphid Cinara tujafilina Zooms in on the Process of Accommodation to a Cooperative Intracell…

2014

Particularly interesting cases of mutualistic endosymbioses come from the establishment of co-obligate associations of more than one species of endosymbiotic bacteria. Throughout symbiotic accommodation from a free-living bacterium, passing through a facultative stage and ending as an obligate intracellular one, the symbiont experiences massive genomic losses and phenotypic adjustments. Here, we scrutinized the changes in the coevolution of Serratia symbiotica and Buchnera aphidicola endosymbionts in aphids, paying particular attention to the transformations undergone by S. symbiotica to become an obligate endosymbiont. Although it is already known that S. symbiotica is facultative in Acyrt…
