Can absence restore authenticity? The case of Strasbourg Christmas Market
2023
The Strasbourg Christmas Market (MNS) was greatly impacted by the pandemic in 2020. This research delves into the role of absence in the consumption experience through fifteen semi-structured interviews with regular MNS attendees and ethnographic observations of the MNS's iconic locations. Our findings indicate that individuals, affected by two lockdowns and the pandemic's social and economic repercussions, are eager to rediscover the city without overbidding. The absence reinforces the imaginative value of the MNS, imparting renewed significance. The authentic heritage of Strasbourg's historic center appears to have been reclaimed and compensates for the void. The Christmas market is prese…
Cardiac surgery outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): A case-series report
2020
Abstract Objective The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the postoperative course of patients after cardiac surgery is unknown. We experienced a major severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak in our cardiac surgery unit, with several patients who tested positive early after surgery. Here we describe the characteristics, postoperative course, and laboratory findings of these patients, along with the fate of the health care workers. We also discuss how we reorganize and reallocate hospital resources to resume the surgical activity without further positive patients. Methods After diagnosis of the first symptomatic patient, surgery was suspended. Naso…

2009
This study describes the origin and development of the sports phenomenon in the industrial cities of Le Creusot and Montceaules-Mines (Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy), from 1879 to 1939. Throughout this period, sports in Le Creusot were totally dominated by associations led and controlled by the manufacturers, whereas in Montceau-les-Mines, worker sports were the object of conflict between industrialists and labor organisations. Such a contrast signals the existence of tight connections at the local level between the history of a place and the way in which a sport develops there. At the same time, these observations suggest some conclusions about historical conditions necessary to the emergence o…
Circulating TNF-alpha and its soluble receptors during experimental acute pancreatitis.
2004
Clinical and experimental studies have shown increased concentrations of TNF-α and its soluble receptors in serum of patients with acute pancreatitis. In this work, we have investigated the time-course of TNF-α and its soluble receptors during taurocholate-induced acute pancreatitis. In addition, since TNF-α itself could mediate the shedding of its receptors, we have assessed the effect of inhibiting TNF-α production on the release of soluble TNF-α receptors in experimental acute pancreatitis. Our results indicate that soluble receptors are released in the early stages of the disease and this increase is concomitant with the release of TNF-α, which is mainly bound to specific proteins. The …
A Retrospective Study of the Proportion of Women at High and Low Risk of Intrauterine Infection Meeting Sepsis Criteria
2021
The Surviving Sepsis Campaign recently recommended that qSOFA not be used as a single parameter for identification of sepsis. Thus, we evaluated the efficacy of SIRS and qSOFA scores in identifying intrauterine infection. This case–control study evaluates SIRS and qSOFA criteria fulfillment in preterm premature rupture of membranes (n = 453)—at high infection risk—versus elective cesarean—at low infection risk (n = 2004); secondary outcomes included intrauterine infection and positive culture rates. At admission, 14.8% of the study group and 4.6% of control met SIRS criteria (p = 0.001), as did 12.5% and 5.5% on post-operation day (POD) 1 (p = 0.001), with no signifi…
