Multifeature Image and Video Content-Based storage and retrieval
1996
In this paper we present most recent evolution of JACOB, a system we developed for image and video content-based storage and retrieval. The system is based on two separate archives: a 'features DB' and a 'raw-data DB'. When a user puts a query, a search is done in the 'features DB'; the selected items are taken form the 'raw-data DB' and shown to the user. Two kinds of sessions are allowed: 'database population' and 'database querying'. During a 'database population' session the user inserts new data into the archive. The input data can consist of digital images or videos. Videos are split into shots and for each shot one or more representative frames are automatically extracted. Shots and …
Electrical energy analysis and potential environmental improvements of sheet metal punching processes
2013
Discrete part manufacturing processes, in particular non-conventional production processes, are still poorly documented in terms of environmental footprint. Within the separating processes, sheet metal punching processes have not been analyzed yet from environmental point of view. The present paper aims to contribute to filling this knowledge gap. In particular, two different punching machine tool architectures were analyzed. Following the previously developed CO2PE methodological approach, power studies and a preliminary time study have been performed in order to understand the contribution of each sub-unit towards the total energy demand. The influence of the most relevant process paramet…
A More Simple G-Code Programming within an Open Source CNC System
2006
In this paper we introduce the utilization of a new CNC programming language, named O-Word, a way to implement several branching routines into the EMC interpreter. It opens new interesting possibilities to programmers who can build subroutines, loops, and conditionals while taking advantage of the interpreter's use of variables and computation. Therefore, it allows us to make pieces describing theirs features instead of tool's movements. We will demonstrate a new complex routine in order to show both the language syntax and its potential for advanced applications.
INTERNET BASED DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPEN SOURCE LOW-COST CNC
2006
In this paper we show how to realize a low-cost numerical system, based on an “open source” software called EMC (Enhanced Machine Control). First, we assembled a low cost CNC workstation with a remote control by means of an online computer with a webcam, as an example of the software's potentiality. Moreover, we translated a graphical user interface (AXIS), in co-operation with the international development community, in order to improve its userfriendliness.
A Web based remote control of CNC machines
2009
Due to the large variety of products in small batch sizes, a modern machining shop floor requires an advanced real-time control system able to both monitor all the features and adapt the manufacturing system to the rapid changes of production capability and functionality. This is especially true when the shop floors are combined with the e-Manufacturing concept. e-Manufacturing is a transformation system which enables the manufacturing operations to achieve a predictive near-zero-downtime performance as well as to synchronize with the management systems through the use of infotronics technologies (i.e., wireless connections, web applications, networking systems, etc.). In recent years, the …
Low‐cost, High‐Capability, Embedded Systems for CNC Education and Research
2015
Teaching of CNC and CAD/CAM technologies has recently taken a great importance, due to their development, to the great number of solutions available on the market, and to the frequent updates. Nevertheless, one of the most urgent need is to improve the quality of education coping with a rapidly growing number of students. Nowadays, in comparison to the past, many Open-Source technical solutions, both hardware and software, are available to realise easily and cheaply some scaled-down prototypes of numerical control machine tools: these are able to work perfectly and can be employed as a learning method. This paper shows some past experiences regarding the development of some degree thesis wo…
Influence of Material-Related Aspectsof Additive and Subtractive Ti-6Al-4VManufacturing on Energy Demandand Carbon Dioxide Emissions
2017
The additive manufacturing of metal parts represents a promising process that could beused alongside traditional manufacturing methods. The research scenario in this field isstill largely unexplored, as far as the technological solutions adopted to integrate differentprocesses are concerned and in terms of environmental and economic impact assessment. In this article, an electron beam melting (EBM) process and a machining process have beenanalyzed and compared using a cradle-to-grave life cycle–based approach. The productionof components made of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been assumed as a case study. Theproposed methodology is able to account for all of the main factors of influence on energydem…
Analysis of the mechanical performance of hybrid (SPR/bonded) single-lap joints between CFRP panels and aluminum blanks
2013
Abstract The increasing use of innovative materials in manufacturing of modern mechanical components has led to the development of reliable joints between innovative (composite materials etc.) and traditional materials (steel, aluminum etc.). In the last few years, hybrid joints, combining the advantages of the adhesive joints and traditional mechanical joints as bolted or riveted joints, have been shown an increasing industrial interest especially in automotive and aerospace sectors. In the present paper a systematic experimental study of hybrid lap joints was carried out with the aim to detect the optimal joint configuration. Tensile tests on hybrid joints made by combining adhesive bondi…
Rethinking the sGLOH Descriptor
2018
sGLOH (shifting GLOH) is a histogram-based keypoint descriptor that can be associated to multiple quantized rotations of the keypoint patch without any recomputation. This property can be exploited to define the best distance between two descriptor vectors, thus avoiding computing the dominant orientation. In addition, sGLOH can reject incongruous correspondences by adding a global constraint on the rotations either as an a priori knowledge or based on the data. This paper thoroughly reconsiders sGLOH and improves it in terms of robustness, speed and descriptor dimension. The revised sGLOH embeds more quantized rotations, thus yielding more correct matches. A novel fast matching scheme is a…
Properties Augmentation of Cast Hypereutectic Al–Si Alloy Through Friction Stir Processing
2022
AbstractThe present endeavour is to augment mechanical attributes via friction stir processing (FSP) in hypereutectic aluminium–silicon castings by the means of microstructural modifications and defects reduction. Wherein, the study proceeds with mainly two approaches namely, alteration in tool revolution (TR) and the number of FSP passes. The prepared specimens were evaluated investigating volume fraction of porosities, microstructural characterizations and microhardness. Therefrom, the specimen with highest number of passes delivered most uniform properties resulting from the reduction in casting porosities and refined silicon particle uniform distribution throughout friction stir process…
