Machine consciousness: A manifesto for robotics

2009

Machine consciousness is not only a technological challenge, but a new way to approach scientific and theoretical issues which have not yet received a satisfactory solution from AI and robotics. We outline the foundations and the objectives of machine consciousness from the standpoint of building a conscious robot. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Closing the sensing-reasoning-actuating loop in resource-constrained WSANs through distributed symbolic processing

2015

Many issues in creating complex applications for pervasive environments are primarily due to the effort required to integrate perception, reasoning and actuating tasks in an efficient and homogeneous way, especially when the underlying infrastructure consists of wirelessly networked embedded devices. To mitigate the complexity of the actual implementation, satisfactory programming paradigms supporting the integration and coordination among heterogeneous devices are required. In this paper we show how a distributed symbolic processing approach that is particularly suited for resource constrained devices, such as the nodes of a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN), may be apt to the pu…

Which Is Which? Evaluation of Local Descriptors for Image Matching in Real-World Scenarios

2019

Matching with local image descriptors is a fundamental task in many computer vision applications. This paper describes the WISW contest held within the framework of the CAIP 2019 conference, aimed at benchmarking recent descriptors in challenging planar and non-planar real image matching scenarios. According to the contest results, the descriptors submitted to the competition, most of which based on deep learning, perform significantly better than the current state-of-the-art in image matching. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement, especially in the case of non-planar scenes.

ARCHITETTURA SISTEMICA. Materiali ed Elementi Costruttivi (II EDIZIONE AGGIORNATA)

2009

ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS ON FRICTION STIR WELDED AND LASER WELDED 6XXX ALUMINIUM ALLOYS T-JOINTS

2007

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and Laser Welding (LW) can be successfully employed to weld aluminium alloys, in many cases overcoming the difficulties encountered with more conventional welding processes like MIG or TIG. The corrosion resistance of the welded joint remains, however, an important issue, especially in applications (like in aircrafts), where corrosion can induce structural failure: the weld region has often lower mechanical resistance in comparison with the parent material and a decrease in its corrosion resistance, especially when the corrosion damage can represent a potential crack initiation site, can be unacceptable in components design. In this work the corrosion resistance …

Mechanical behaviour and failure modes of metal to composite adhesive joints for nautical applications

2010

In this paper, the influence of several parameters on the mechanical behaviour and failure modes of hybrid bonded joints aluminium/composite was investigated. Particularly, the effects of metallic surface condition, adhesive properties and thickness on single-lap joint resistance were analysed. To these aims, two adhesives were used and, for each adhesive, two different adhesive thicknesses (0.5 and 1.5 mm) have been investigated. Furthermore, two sets of joints for each adhesive kind and thickness were investigated: the former was obtained using aluminium blanks which were previously mechanically treated with sandpaper (P60) and the latter using aluminium treated with sandpaper and with pr…

Effect of Chemical Etching on Adhesively Bonded Aluminum AA6082

2007

The efforts of new automotive industry are mainly directed towards the substitution of aluminum for steel in the body structure because the aluminum structures are lighter than traditional steel ones and meet the requirements, in terms of both vehicle design and manufacture. However, this substitution is not so automatic, but it is important to study the material properties and the structure design, focusing the attention on the methods of joining. Welding, typical technique to joint steel parts, is particularly difficult when applied on aluminum ones and then, in many cases, the adhesive bonding is preferred. To optimise the joint performances it is necessary to pre-treat the metal surface…

Using a neural network for predicting the average grain size in friction stir welding processes

2009

In the paper the microstructural phenomena in terms of average grain size occurring in friction stir welding (FSW) processes are focused. A neural network was linked to a finite element model (FEM) of the process to predict the average grain size values. The utilized net was trained starting from experimental data and numerical results of butt joints and then tested on further butt, lap and T-joints. The obtained results show the capability of the AI technique in conjunction with the FE tool to predict the final microstructure in the FSW joints.

Mechanical and microstructural properties prediction by artificial neural networks in FSW processes of dual phase titanium alloys

2012

Abstract Friction Stir Welding (FSW), as a solid state welding process, seems to be one of the most promising techniques for joining titanium alloys avoiding a large number of difficulties arising from the use of traditional fusion welding processes. In order to pursue cost savings and a time efficient design, the development of numerical simulations of the process can represent a valid choice for engineers. In the paper an artificial neural network was properly trained and linked to an existing 3D FEM model for the FSW of Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy, with the aim to predict both the microhardness values and the microstructure of the welded butt joints at the varying of the main process parame…

Prediction of Tool Wear Progress in Machining of Carbon Steel using different Tool Wear Mechanismsl

2008

In this paper the prediction of tool wear on carbide uncoated tools was taken into account. In particular, two different tool wear models based on the diffusion mechanism and on the abrasion mechanism were considered. The calibration of the utilized models was done using the results obtained by experimental analysis performed on an orthogonally machined AISI 1020 tube. Once the calibration was executed, numerical simulations, for both the utilized tool wear models, were simultaneously performed with the aim to test the capability of the proposed numerical procedure. The comparison between the two tool wear mechanisms for predicting the flank tool wear is discussed in the paper.
