Determining the deformation and resulting coupling efficiency degradation of ultrastable fiber-coupled optical benches under load.

2020

Fiber-coupled optical benches are an integral part of many laser systems. The base of such an optical bench is usually a slab of solid material, onto which optical components are fixed. In many environments, the ability to retain high fiber coupling efficiency under mechanical loads is essential. In this article, we study the fiber-to-fiber coupling efficiency under the application of static mechanical loads experimentally and theoretically: We constructed a simple three-point bending setup to interferometrically measure the deformation of an optical bench under load. Using the same setup, we further recorded the resulting coupling efficiency variations. The examined optical benches are bas…

Correlative study of structural and optical properties of ZnSe under severe plastic deformation

2019

The effect of plastic deformation on the optical and structural properties of ZnSe crystals has been investigated. The optical properties have been monitored by cathodoluminescence measurements as a function of the deformation degree. Remarkable differences in the defect-related emissions from the most severely deformed areas have been encountered. Deformation of the crystal lattice of ZnSe, associated with slip phenomena, has been studied by means of Electron Backscattered Diffraction and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The relation between the deformation and the optical properties of the ZnSe crystals has been described.

Computational volumetric reconstruction of integral imaging with improved depth resolution considering continuously non-uniform shifting pixels

2018

Abstract In this paper, we propose a new computational volumetric reconstruction technique of three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging for depth resolution enhancement by using non-uniform and integer-valued shifting pixels. In a typical integral imaging system, 3D images can be recorded and visualized using a lenslet array. In previous studies, many computational reconstruction techniques such as computational volumetric reconstruction and pixel of elemental images rearrangement technique (PERT) have been reported. However, a computational volumetric reconstruction technique has low visual quality and depth resolution because low-resolution elemental images and uniformly distributed shiftin…

MeV-energy Xe ion-induced damage in LiF: The contribution of electronic and nuclear stopping mechanisms

2016

The contribution of electronic and nuclear damage mechanisms in the modification of structure and micromechanical properties of LiF crystals irradiated with 52, 224, and 450 MeV Xe ions at fluences 1010–1014 ions cm−2 has been studied. The ion-induced formation of dislocations and hardening in LiF at fluences above 1010 ions cm−2 has been observed. The depth profiles of nanoindentation show a joint contribution of electronic excitation and nuclear (impact) mechanisms to the ion-induced hardening. The electronic excitation mechanism dominates in the major part of the ion range while the impact mechanism prevails in a narrow zone at the end of the ion range. The efficiency of hardening produc…

Space charge accumulation in undersea HVDC cables as function of heat exchange conditions at the boundaries – water-air interface

2020

Transmission lines with undersea HVDC cables are an interesting technological solution for the supply of electrical energy to islands. The accumulation of space charge inside the dielectric layer of a HVDC cable is one of the most important element to consider in its design and during operation. The formation of space charge is due to various factors including the high dependence on the temperature of the electrical conductivity of the insulation and the establishment of a thermal gradient under load conditions. This research is focused on the space charge accumulation phenomenon around a section of a HVDC cable half dipped in water and half in air. Due to the high difference in thermal con…

Temperature Coefficients of Crystal Defects in Multicrystalline Silicon Wafers

2020

This article investigates the influence of crystallographic defects on the temperature sensitivity of multicrystalline silicon wafers. The thermal characteristics of the implied open-circuit voltage is assessed since it determines most of the total temperature sensitivity of the material. Spatially resolved temperature-dependent analysis is performed on wafers from various brick positions; intragrain regions, grain boundaries, and dislocation clusters are examined. The crystal regions are studied before and after subjecting the wafers to phosphorus gettering, aiming to alter the metallic impurity concentration in various regions across the wafers. Most intragrain regions and grain boundarie…

EBSD, XRD and SRS characterization of a casting Al-7wt%Si alloy processed by equal channel angular extrusion: Dislocation density evaluation

2019

Abstract Aluminum‑silicon (Al Si) alloys of high silicon contents are composite materials; they are used whenever high casting properties are required. They are slightly ductile below 8wt%Si. An increase in ductility can be obtained by refining Si-crystals in elaboration or by a further hot working. In the present work, an Al-7wt%Si alloy was processed by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) at temperatures 20 °C and 160 °C up to three passes. The die was formed by two cylindrical channels with characteristic angles Φ = 110° and Ψ = 0. EBSD, X ray diffraction (XRD) and Strain Rate Sensitivity (SRS) were used to characterize the microstructure and the mechanical properties. High levels of …

A new 18 GHz room temperature electron cyclotron resonance ion source for highly charged ion beams

2020

An innovative 18 GHz HIISI (Heavy Ion Ion Source Injector) room temperature Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source (ECRIS) has been designed and constructed at the Department of Physics, University of Jyväskylä (JYFL), for the nuclear physics program of the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory. The primary objective of HIISI is to increase the intensities of medium charge states (M/Q ≅ 5) by a factor of 10 in comparison with the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS and to increase the maximum usable xenon charge state from 35+ to 44+ to serve the space electronics irradiation testing program. HIISI is equipped with a refrigerated permanent magnet hexapole and a noncylindrical plasma chamber to achieve very stro…

Interaction of carbon with microstructural defects in a W-Re matrix: An ab initio assessment

2019

The interaction of carbon atoms with point defects and the core of edge and screw dislocations with Burgers vector a 0 / 2 ⟨ 111 ⟩ in W and a W-Re matrix is studied by means of ab initio calculations. The structure and energetics of the ground-state atomic configurations are presented and rationalized. It is found that di-vacancies, which are thermally unstable in pure W according to the state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, can nucleate at C and Re-C complexes, which fill the gap in the explanation of the emergence of nanovoids observed experimentally under irradiation. Also, on the basis of the recent experimental evidence and our calculations, the temperature ranges for the manifestat…

How Gettering Affects the Temperature Sensitivity of the Implied Open Circuit Voltage of Multicrystalline Silicon Wafers

2019

The temperature sensitivity of the open circuit voltage of a solar cell is mainly driven by changes in the intrinsic carrier concentration, but also by the temperature dependence of the limiting recombination mechanisms in the cell. This paper investigates the influence of recombination through metallic impurities on the temperature sensitivity of multicrystalline silicon wafers. Spatially resolved temperature dependent analysis is performed to evaluate the temperature sensitivity of wafers from different brick positions before and after being subjected to phosphorus diffusion gettering. Local spatial analysis is performed on intra-grain areas, dislocation clusters and grain boundaries. Lar…
