Interaction between a water-in-oil microemulsion and a linear-dendritic poly(propylene oxide)–polyglycerol block copolymer
2011
We present small angle scattering and dielectric spectroscopy results on the influence of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer on the structure and dynamics of a microemulsion. We use a water-in-oil (w/o) droplet microemulsion based on the anionic surfactant AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate), that forms spherical water droplets coated by a monolayer of AOT dispersed in the continuous oil matrix. The studied polymer consists of a hydrophobic poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) block and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol with 74 glycerol units (NG74). Combining small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) we find that the droplet structure is preserved …
Quasielastic neutron scattering study of dynamics at the crossover from dilute to semidilute behavior in polymer solutions

Neutron scattering characterization of homopolymers and graft-copolymer micelles in supercritical carbon dioxide
1996
Abstract Superficial fluids (SCF) are becoming an attractive alternative to the liquid solvents traditionally used as polymerization media [1]. As the synthesis proceeds, a wide range of colloidal aggregates form, but there has hitherto been no way to measure such structures directly. We have applied small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to characterize such systems, and although SCF polymerizations are carried out at high pressures, the penetrating power of the neutron beam means that typical cell windows are virtually transparent. Systems studied include polymers soluble in CO 2 such as poly(1,1-dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) (PFOA), poly(hexafluoropropylene oxide) (PHFPO) and poly(dimet…

Telechelic α,ω-macrozwitterions — narrowly distributed polystyrene chains oppositely charged at each end — were synthesized via anionic polymerization using direct functionalization with the initiator and the termination agent. The resulting products were purified (zwitterion content ≥ 0,95) and characterized with gel permeation chromatography, viscometry, static and dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering. In unpolar solvents as toluene, the polymeric zwitterions form clusters with molecular weights depending on concentration. In the dilute case, the clusters are relatively small and consist of approximately 8 zwitterions. The structure of these clusters is discussed by…
Formation of α-ω(4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane) hexadecane micelles in aqueous solution – effect of HCl addition
2003
The structure of aggregates of a new bolaform surfactant [α-ω (4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane) hexadecane] in neat aqueous solution has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering. Preliminary data analysis unequivocally indicates that globular micelles are formed. This finding has been confirmed by the analysis of data obtained upon addition of hydrochloric acid. The observed significant reduction of micelle aggregation number has been attributed to the peculiar complexing ability of the two aza-crown ether units in the surfactant molecule; this is in line with information inferred from the complexation of ions into the non alkylated azacrown ethers. As a consequence of h…
Conformation of polyethylene molecules in the melt as revealed by small-angle neutron scattering
1975
1985
Samples of ring and open chain polystyrene in dilute perdeuterated toluene solution were measured by small angle neutron scattering up to a value of the scattering vector Q = 2 nm−1. The molar masses 12000 ≤ M/(g/mol) ≤ 22000, the mean square radii of gyration 〈R2〉 and the second virial coefficients A2 of the samples were determined. The results are compared to theories which describe the dependencies 〈R2〉 = f(M) and A2 = f(M) for both cyclic and linear chain molecules. A qualitative agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.
Lipid multilayered particles: the role of chitosan on structure and morphology
2010
Multilayered nanovectors made up from a controlled binary lipid mixture (POPC and DMPS) and trimethyl chitosan (TMC) have been prepared and characterized by light- and small angle neutron scattering. The morphology and the multilayer structure of the particle outer shell has been described in detail. By varying the amount of TMC in the starting solution it is possible to tune the overall surface particle charge as well as its multilamellarity. In this way the drug loading/release properties of the particles can be controlled. Therefore the use of controlled POPC/DMPS mixtures can be a valid alternative to commercial lecithin to obtain nanovectors with specific release properties.
Small-angle neutron scattering from lecithin reverse micelles
1996
Abstract We report new results of small-angle neutron scattering from cyclohexane- d 12 /lecithin/water micellar solutions, performed as a function of the water content, w 0 , the temperature, T and the dispersed-phase volume fraction, ф. The data from dilute samples can be interpreted in terms of the existence of giant cylindrical reverse micelles, in good agreement with the current idea of an unlimited micellar growth with ф. In contrast, the appearance of a sharp interference maximum at high concentrations ( ф > 0.15 ) suggests that the current hypothesis of a gel structure interpreted as a random network of entangled micelles can be assumed to be incorrect, and that there must be some c…
Micelles in Mixtures of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and a Bolaform Surfactant
2006
Mixtures composed of water, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a bolaform surfactant with two aza-crown ethers as polar headgroups (termed Bola C-16) were investigated by modulating the mole ratios between the components. The two surfactants have ionic and nonionic, but ionizable, headgroups, respectively. The ionization is due to the complexation of alkali ions by the aza-crown ether unit(s). Structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of the above mixtures were investigated. Results from surface tension, translational self-diffusion, and small angle neutron scattering ( SANS) are reported and discussed. Interactions between the two surfactants to form mixed micelles result in a com…
