Quality attracts parasites: host condition‐dependent chemo‐orientation of trematode larvae
2015
Summary Environmental factors impairing physiological condition of organisms are assumed to predispose them to parasite infections. This is because host immune function is typically condition-dependent. However, poor physiological condition has been reported to reduce host susceptibility to parasites in various systems. We examined whether such an effect can be due to altered exposure of hosts to active parasite transmission stages by investigating chemo-orientation of free-swimming cercariae larvae of a parasite Echinoparyphium aconiatum towards its snail host Lymnaea stagnalis. We used both long-term and short-term feeding treatments to manipulate the body condition and physiological trai…

Transmission modes affect the population structure of potato virus Y in potato.
2020
Transmission is a crucial part of a viral life cycle and transmission mode can have an important impact on virus biology. It was demonstrated that transmission mode can influence the virulence and evolution of a virus; however, few empirical data are available to describe the direct underlying changes in virus population structure dynamics within the host. Potato virus Y (PVY) is an RNA virus and one of the most damaging pathogens of potato. It comprises several genetically variable strains that are transmitted between plants via different transmission modes. To investigate how transmission modes affect the within-plant viral population structure, we have used a deep sequencing approach to …
An Outbreak of Hepatitis C Virus Infection Among Transfused Thalassemia Patients: Root Cause Analysis, Phylogenetic Epidemiology and Antiviral Therapy
2021
Background: Occurrence of HCV infection is reduced by effective risk management procedures, but patient-to-patient transmission continues to be reported in healthcare settings. We report an outbreak of 11 patients with HCV acute hepatitis (seven new infections and four re-infections) among 128 thalassemia patients followed at a Hospital in Sicily. Methods All patients with acute hepatitis and known chronic infection were tested for HCV-RNA, HCV genotyping, and NS3, NS5A and NS5B HCV-genomic regions sequencing. To identify transmission clusters we built phylogenetic trees for each gene employing Bayesian methods. Findings All patients with acute hepatitis were infected with HCV genotype 1b…
The influence of storage method on the transparency of pig crystalline lens
2019
Este artículo se ha publicado de forma definitiva en: http://www.scielo.br/pdf/abo/v82n1/0004-2749-abo-82-01-0056.pdf Purpose: The porcine eye is frequently used as a research model. This paper analyzes the effect of different storage methods on the transparency of pig crystalline lens. Methods: A spectral transmission curve (from 220 to 780 nm) for the crystalline lens was determined experimentally after storage in different conditions: saline solution, formalin, castor oil, and freezing at -80°C. The total transmission in the visible spectrum, which was used as an index of transparency, was calculated from these curves. For comparative purposes, fresh lenses were evaluated and used as con…
