Failure of 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ) to inhibit soluble guanylyl cyclase in rat ventricular cardiomyocytes
1999
The effects of 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), an inhibitor of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), were investigated in aortic rings and ventricular cardiomyocytes from rats. The production of cyclic GMP was stimulated by NO•-donors or carbachol. Additionally, the effects of ODQ were studied in cytosolic extracts from both tissues in which the cyclic GMP production was stimulated by S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP). In endothelium-intact aortic rings, SNAP (100 μM), 2,2′-(hydroxynitrosohydrazino)bis-ethanamine (DETA NONOate; 100 μM), or carbachol (10 μM) increased cyclic GMP levels about 4 fold. These effects were abolished by ODQ (50 μM). In cardiomyocytes, SNAP (100 μ…
Antipredatory function of head shape for vipers and their mimics.
2011
Most research into the adaptive significance of warning signals has focused on the colouration and patterns of prey animals. However, behaviour, odour and body shape can also have signal functions and thereby reduce predators' willingness to attack defended prey. European vipers all have a distinctive triangular head shape; and they are all venomous. Several non-venomous snakes, including the subfamily Natricinae, commonly flatten their heads (also known as head triangulation) when disturbed. The adaptive significance of this potential behavioural mimicry has never been investigated. We experimentally tested if the triangular head shape typical of vipers offers protection against predation.…
Metallothionein in the freshwater gastropod Melanopsis dufouri chronically exposed to cadmium: A methodological approach
2010
Previous studies have demonstrated that the use of differential pulse polarography (DPP) for metallothionein (MT) determination in marine gastropod tissues, particularly the digestive gland, requires taking into account the presence of heat-stable high molecular weight compounds that exhibit polarographic signal. In the present paper, similar compounds were identified in tissues from the freshwater snail Melanopsis dufouri which also interfere with MT determination by DPP and, due to their silver binding capacity, also interfere in the silver assay for MT quantification. Ultrafiltration seems to be effective in removing these high molecular weight compounds from heat-denatured homogenate su…
An optimised multi-host trematode life cycle: fishery discards enhance trophic parasite transmission to scavenging birds
2016
Overlapping distributions of hosts and parasites are critical for successful completion of multi-host parasite life cycles and even small environmental changes can impact on the parasite's presence in a host or habitat. The generalist Cardiocephaloides longicollis was used as a model for multi-host trematode life cycles in marine habitats. This parasite was studied to quantify parasite dispersion and transmission dynamics, effects of biological changes and anthropogenic impacts on life cycle completion. We compiled the largest host dataset to date, by analysing 3351 molluscs (24 species), 2108 fish (25 species) and 154 birds (17 species) and analysed the resultant data based on a number of …
Towards a theory of transnational academic capitalism
2013
This article draws attention to the relative lack of theoretically and methodologically elaborated approaches to understand and explain the complex relations between transnationalization of higher education and globalization seen especially from the point of view of global capitalism. The main aim of this article is to contribute to the construction of a theory of transnational academic capitalism (TAC). A theory of TAC argues that those networks, practices and activities that are blurring the boundaries between higher education, markets and states are increasingly becoming transnational without supposing that this transformation implies that local and national levels are insignificant in s…
THE EFFECTS OF MATING SYSTEM AND GENETIC VARIABILITY ON SUSCEPTIBILITY TO TREMATODE PARASITES IN A FRESHWATER SNAIL, LYMNAEA STAGNALIS
2004
The amount and distribution of genetic variability in host populations can have significant effects on the outcome of host-parasite interactions. We studied the effect of mating system and genetic variability on susceptibility of Lymnaea stagnalis snails to trematode parasites. Mating system of snails from eight populations differing in the amount of genetic variability was manipulated, and self- and cross-fertilized offspring were exposed to naturally occurring trematode parasites in a controlled lake experiment. Susceptibility of snails varied between populations, but mating-system treatment did not have a significant effect. Heterozygosity of snails was negatively correlated with the pro…
Edukacja artystyczna na Ukrainie w kontekście dynamicznych zmian współczesnej cywilizacji
2015
W artykule analizuje się rozwój edukacji artystycznej w obrębie noosferogenezy. Uzasadniono znaczenie orientacji noosferycznej całego systemu edukacji artystycznej polegającej na formowaniu świadomości opartej na wiedzy noosferycznej i światopoglądzie noosferycznym. Osiągnięcie integracji edukacji artystycznej ze współczesnym globalnym światem informacyjnym wymaga włą- czenia przyszłych nauczycieli dyscyplin artystycznych w metasystem działalności artystyczno-pedagogicznej, który mimo swej dynamiczności posiada pewną strukturę i organizację, pozwala orientować się w procesie samorozwoju, dodając mu własne ukierunkowanie.
Minori stranieri e famiglie transnazionali. Il significato di una relazione a distanza
2015
THE POTENTIALS OF A TRANSIENT TRANSNATIONAL COMMUNITY FOR TEACHER EDUCATORS’ PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
2020
Although there has been a rising interest in the profession of teacher educators, there is still a lack of research looking at the professional learning and development of teacher educators. Taking a European perspective, we intend to contribute to the field of teacher education. At the outset we outline current literature and research findings, indicating various challenges that teacher education professionals face in today’s society, which are prominent in many contexts of language teacher education. Choosing to study a transient transnational community of 11 teacher educators as an autoethnographic case, we draw on qualitative data collected in the context of the ERASMUS+ project proPIC …
