Alterations in the organization of the isocortical layer I in trisomy 22.

1999

The isocortical layer I of human fetal brains obtained from different cases of chromosomal abnormalities (trisomy 18, 21, 22) and controls without pathological disturbances were investigated histologically and immunohistochemically by using the antibodies SMI 311, SMI 35 and SMI 81 (SNAP 25) as well as antibodies against GAP 43 and calretinin. In cases of trisomy 22 the Cajal-Retzius cells in Nissl-sections and in SMI 311-immunopreparations do not reveal any alterations regarding their location or morphology. However, the axonal plexus, selectively labelled with SMI 35, normally located in layer Ib, is malpositioned in Ia. Likewise, SNAP 25- and GAP 43-immunoreactive structures, which were …

Therapeutic targeting of SNAIL, RKIP, and YY1 in tumor metastasis and drug resistance

2020

Abstract Cancer is the leading cause of deaths worldwide and is of great importance. Metastasis-inducing the majority of cancer related deaths is a principal problem in cancer treatment. Therefore, therapy regimes preventing metastasis formation are of prominent importance to improve the outcome of malignant diseases. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a predominant process associated with the onset of metastasis and converts epithelial cells to mesenchymal cells. In this chapter, we concentrated on three proteins involved in the metastasis and EMT: RKIP, SNAIL, and YY1. Briefly, SNAIL and YY1 are overexpressed in many cancers, while RKIP is downregulated. Therefore, these prote…

Variation in predator species abundance can cause variable selection pressure on warning signaling prey

2012

Predation pressure is expected to drive visual warning signals to evolve toward conspicuousness. However, coloration of defended species varies tremendously and can at certain instances be considered as more camouflaged rather than conspicuous. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the variation in signal conspicuousness can be caused by variation (within or between species) in predators' willingness to attack defended prey or by the broadness of the predators' signal generalization. If some of the predator species are capable of coping with the secondary defenses of their prey, selection can favor reduced prey signal conspicuousness via reduced detectability or recognition. In this study…

Euparyphium albuferensis and Echinostoma friedi (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae): Experimental cercarial transmission success in sympatric snail communi…

2008

Euparyphium albuferensis and Echinostoma friedi cercarial infectivity to four species of sympatric snails was exam- ined under single- or multiple-choice laboratory conditions to show the level of parasite-snail host compatibility. Radix peregra, Lymnaea fuscus, Physella acuta and Gyraulus chinensis act as second intermediate hosts of both parasite species although differ- ent cercarial transmission success (CTS) was observed. In single-host experiments, R. peregra and P. acuta showed a high de- gree of compatibility with E. albuferensis, while only P. acuta in the case of E. friedi. In two-choice snail communities, a snail with high CTS increased the values of another with low compatibilit…

Size matters in studies of dead wood and wood-inhabiting fungi

2011

Abstract Because biased biodiversity surveys may result in ineffective use of conservation or research resources it is important that measures for biodiversity are accurate. In forest ecosystems wood-inhabiting fungi are an ecologically important species group. We addressed the question whether or not the traditional methodology to survey only coarse woody debris provides accurate estimates of the assemblages of wood-inhabiting fungi or the dead wood itself. In this study, we included all dead wood pieces irrespective of the diameter. Our results showed that the chosen minimum size of studied dead wood pieces has crucial importance for species recordings of wood-inhabiting fungi and for rec…
