The European Round Table of Industrialists and the restructuring of European higher education
2014
The restructuring of European higher education (EHE) since the 1980s is a widely studied subject. However, this paper argues that previous studies have paid insufficient attention to the role of transnational policy-making groups in this complex and multilevel process. This argument is supported by focusing on how the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) has participated in this restructuring since the mid-1980s. This paper's focus is especially in two ERT documents that were published in the 1980s. The main finding is that the current restructuring of EHE reflects interests of the ERT that represents the emerging transnational capitalist class (TCC) at European level.
Circularity Within the EU: The Return Intentions of Latvian Migrants
2016
Recently, much attention has been paid in the literature to circular migration because of its perceived potential to reduce permanent migration and to promote development. This is probably a result of a perfect combination of interests benefiting not only sending and receiving countries, but also the migrants themselves (Vertovec 2007; Adepoju et al. 2010; Castles and Ozkul 2014). Circularity allows migrants to gain experience and acquire skills, and to apply them on returning to their countries of origin, thereby contributing to development (Cassarino 2004; de Haas 2010, 2012), transforming brain drain into brain gain, and at the same time contributing to their positive effects on labour m…
El valor de la Fisiocracia en su propio tiempo: un análisis crítico
2009
The value of the physiocratic doctrine is examined with an historical-analytical approach that takes into account both the French reality of the mid 18th century and the internal consideration of the doctrine. Starting from the overwhelming opposition of the French contemporaries, the three areas of the phyisiocrats’ system are critically reviewed: the philosophical-political framework, the theoretical economic analysis and the main maxims of the economic government. We conclude that Physiocracy, together with presenting some analytical advances, diagnosed the French economy inadequately, incurred in outstanding economic errors and proposed, within the political framework of severe “legal d…
‘Experimental Union’ and Baltic Sea cooperation: the case of the European Union’s Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR)
2018
In the past, Baltic Sea cooperation has been characterized by a plethora of actors, embracing a wide range of policy objectives, such as the establishment of a good environmental status for the regional sea. In 2009, the European Council endorsed the European Union’s (EU) Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) as a new tool in the repertoire of Cohesion Policy and European Territorial Cooperation (ETC). The EUSBSR seeks to foster cross-sectoral coordination and functional cooperation in policy areas of ‘macro-region-level’ relevance, such as transport infrastructure, economic development and environmental protection – thus projecting a ‘soft space’ of transnational Baltic Sea cooperati…
Być kamieniem w mozaice, czyli o wartości własnej człowieka w pismach Edyty Stein (św. Teresy Benedykty od Krzyża)
2017
To describe important spiritual and philosophical issues Edith Stein used a symbol. The reason was her aesthetical sensitivity, but also, to some extent, her method of the phenomenological view. The definitions of the symbol used by the philosopher in the writings were introduced in the beginning. However, the main purpose of this article is the analysis of the symbolic stone. Recalling the context in the writings of Edith Stein and other texts that influenced her, one can find out that through these images she gets to the essence of all important aspects of the human being. Analyzing the symbol was tire attempt to show the extended reflection over the self-value of the woman, and then of a…
Infancia migrante y educación trasnacional en la frontera de México-Estados Unidos
2013
[EN] Child and youth migration, along with that of the general population, is not an isolated matter of modern-day. In this article we wish to reference the matter of child and youth migration and the educational consequences derived from this. In the matter that concerns us we intend to convey a vision of the current reality of the cross-country migration in the Mexico-United States border. Examining the variables we have observed, according to the profile of children and youths that migrate back and forth from one neighboring country to another along with the process of inclusion into or exclusion out of the educational system both in Mexico as well as in their neighboring country, as wel…
“The famous aunt in America” or the meaning of transnational relationships revisited
2014
Research on transnationalism has provided several empirical studies that depict social structures beyond national borders. One enriching contribution to this vastly growing literature represents a ...
Cholesterol binds to synaptophysin and is required for biogenesis of synaptic vesicles.
1999
Here, to study lipid-protein interactions that contribute to the biogenesis of regulated secretory vesicles, we have developed new approaches by which to label proteins in vivo, using photoactivatable cholesterol and glycerophospholipids. We identify synaptophysin as a major specifically cholesterol-binding protein in PC12 cells and brain synaptic vesicles. Limited cholesterol depletion, which has little effect on total endocytic activity, blocks the biogenesis of synaptic-like microvesicles (SLMVs) from the plasma membrane. We propose that specific interactions between cholesterol and SLMV membrane proteins, such as synaptophysin, contribute to both the segregation of SLMV membrane constit…
Analysis of Air Cycle and Efficiency Evaluation for a Blast Freezing Tunnel Plant
2013
Air refrigerating systems offer a suitable alternative to vapour compression systems. Air can be used as working fluid in gas compression cycles for refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems. This paper gives some results of theoretical investigation into improved air cycles for refrigeration systems and a comparison is made with their performances. The case-study relates to a dual purpose refrigerating plant. A blast freezing tunnel gives the coldest air stream and, in cascade, the air coming out from the tunnel is used in a channel network for feeding a lot of chilling cells. The case-study analysed indicates that there is a real possibility to build plants which will be equip…
